I have done a similar experience to what you will be doing.

I think you will be pleasantly surprised along the journey. Fear is the only thing that will keep you from reaching out and meeting new people that could help you on your return voyage. If you are a person of faith, then this is a wonderful time to think about your faith and you will have lessons to learn from for the rest of your life. Congrats on smashing your fund raising goals for your charity.
