Hello lovely people of SG, the pc that I've been buying parts for for about a year is finally almost complete(just need ram and windows, which I'm getting for Christmas :D. This is the PC in case you're interested, I might upload pictures when it's complete. Anyway on to the question, I'll be needing free software such as anti virus, so does anyone here have any recommendations? I also heard about something that cleans your steam files for you?
Anyway, any help will be appreciated and here's a BAKDLASDF for your trouble.(it's not private)

I believe it's because the site uses markup language which needs two spaces for a line break. Alternatively you can
place asterisk in front of the line for it to become bullet list.

Put 2 spaces at the end of the line to cause a line break.
like this.

  • Alternatively, you might find bullet lists useful.
  • Begin a line with a * or -, followed by a space and then text, to make a list item.

Notepad++
GIMP
LibreOffice
RadeonPro
Spotify
WinRAR or 7zip
Box (You can just sync your entire Documents folder and never have to worry about losing anything)
Finally, if you're getting Box, I'd recommend Dropbox Folder Sync (which also works with Box)

If you buy Windows 8.1 instead of 7 you'll get free antivirus, firewall and cloud file hosting.

170.34 pounds just for the mobo and ram... I would have bought cheaper parts with equivalent performance and invested on an SSD :/
Anyway, my recommendations for software: Adobe Flash, Adobe Air, Adobe Reader, Adobe Shockwave, Autoruns, Vuze, CCleaner, CPU-Z, DirectX, ffdshow, Fraps, GPU-Z, ImgBurn, Java, LAV Filters, Media Player Classic Home Cinema, MediaInfo, Mozilla Firefox, Notepad++, Process Explorer, Skype, Steam, VLC, Winamp, WinDirStat and WinRAR

The following are the apps I have on my computer, they may or may not serve your uses.
Firefox 26 -> addons include, WOT, greasemonkey, addblock+, print editor, unhide passwords, and enhanced steam, along with a few others.
Adobe flash and Reader.
Jave (set to only run when I tell it to)
7Zip
VLC, better more dedicated apps out there, but its a simple to use media player that plays everything I need it to.
Steam ( of course )
MagicDisc (allows the user to mount ISO/disc files and run them as if a physical disc was inserted into a drive. For legal testing of course. )
MSI afterburner. (Used to OC and monitor the GPU)
F.lux (controls the temperature colour of the monitor, darker at night, bright in the morning. Helps me fall asleep at night.)
Defraggler and CCleaner. (recommended enough in the thread already.)
For an AV I suggest something like Kasperky if you can pay, if not AVira, Avast, or MSE serve an equal free replacement. Dont listen to people that suggest you dont need one if you "just use common sense", its a load of shit as you can become infected even if you are a tech guru, unless you want to lock down every aspect of your OS.

If you have a lot of games, tiki one steamcleaner or something like that would also be recommended. It goes through and deletes all the direct X, C+ redistribution, and other files that every game packs with ya. Saved me about 10GB or more. Very handy.

-office: libre office (ignore open office plz)
-check ninite.com - best tool ever for keeping your software uptodate

my ninite-config atm: Firefox, Silverlight, Adobe Air, Java x86/x64, Shockwave, 7-Zip, Teracopy, Imgburn, Xnview, Faststone Imageviewer, Notepad++, Winamp, VLC, K-Lite Codecs, Foxit Reader, Libre Office, Avast

  • Firefox - web browser, unless you prefer one of the others
  • SRWare Iron - another browser, for if you like Chrome but hate all the phone-home stuff it does
  • Process Explorer - task manager replacement, bought by Microsoft because it was so much better than what they had
  • VistaSwitcher - alternate alt-tab interface which I happen to like. Worth trying out.
  • 7-Zip - for working with compressed files
  • WhizMouse - makes the mouse wheel work properly on programs which ordinarily handle it very badly (Windows Explorer, for example)

Antivirus I like the Windows Securities Essentials suite. TikiOne Steam Cleaner is the other thing you heard about. Basic photoshopping, paint.net is pretty good, and for more advanced stuff, photoshop cs2 is free to use since adobe gave out the key for it. VLC is great for videos. F.Lux is a nice screen dimmer for using the pc at night.

What about some malware, huh? Don't you want to keep a 50:50 software-malware ratio? That's what the cool kids do.
On the serious note, CCleaner and Auslogics BoostSpeed. When it comes to free anti-virus last time I checked, which, I admit, was quite a while ago, avira was the best.
