Most of us use AdBlock (or similar extensions) because ads are stupid and annoying. However, they generate revenue.
Since cg does not want to accept donations (which makes me love and respect him even more) let's at least disable adblock on this site. It is just one small banner anyway.
Running the site that we all love is not cheap and on top of that it is being constantly upgraded and improved.

If you don't mind please bump this post so other people would see it.

See screenshots below. Click "Don't run on pages on this domain" in AdBlock settings.

Edit: Screens show AdBlock in Google Chrome because it's a most common combination (I think). If you use a different browser or/and blocker just look through settings and you will find something similar. Don't forget to whitelist entire domain (steamgifts.com) and not just a single page.

i would love to just not run adblock but most ad networks dont bother checking to see what scripts they serve so :( maybe i can kick you guys some dollers or something.

Yep. An Adblocker + noscript, and you may never even need an AV or Malware scanner if you are otherwise careful.

Besides i totally agree here if you did gotten an infection av scanners are a lousy protection. Many of those things do bury into system so deep so they aren't traceable anymore or plain deactivate common scanners. (The latter which you can notice)

An av scanner works just well if you have the infected exe/scr lying around on hdd or as an email attachment. Some bring network proxies along which check for typical exploit code through surving. That would be fine too but at the rate of obfuscation goes its not a safe bet.

:The singlemost important thing for security is to deactivate unnecessary plugins. Flash, adobe reader, java. All common gates for malware. If you must use those plugins keep them updated. Seriously!

Thank you for the reminder, time to deactivate Adblock here again. I activated it some months ago, because i got strange redirections when i used SG...activated Adblock and it was gone.

I've never used an Ad Blocker but have considered it because of how intrusive or annoying ads are on some sites. I've never had a problem with the ads here on SteamGifts though.
If anyone has an answer or can direct me to where it is: I started using the SG2O add-on for features like the grid view, custom wishlist, and color coding. Now the ads don't show up, instead in that space I can see some of my SG2O settings. I don't think this is supposed to be a feature and I can't figure out how to get the ads back.
I am using Firefox.

You should definitely use some sort of ad blocker. Some sites are obnoxious xD Unfortunately I don't know how to help with a custom script. Thanks for considering anyway!

i tried sg2o and still got the ads on top of the config, it has to be something else.

Hmm, I need to check whether I have disabled it or not the minute I'm on my laptop...

I'll probably enable it again if the video ads some people are claiming to get are really there. :/

question: i did disable it. but privacy badger stops the ads from loading. there is the banner, but it's empty.
think it's worth something?

I hope someone more knowledgeable corrects me if I am wrong.
Google uses tracking cookies to show "targeted" ads. I guess that's why privacy badger stops them.

didn't clarify the question.
i know why the badger stops them.
i wonder if the ping they send makes them appear as if i'm watching them and the site gets money...

Ads are typical beacons which supply valuable data back to the ad companies. They figured that what you can't see is no problem to you. Thats why the addon makes short work of them.

maybe i'm missing something, but i didn't understand you.
i don't care how the addon can block the ads, i care about the monetry meaning

Well there is competition between ad companies to deliver the.most fitting ads to the most relevant users. Companies do their own profiling of those whom are displayed their ads. They collect anything they can grab ahold but ultimatedly they aim to get to know your habits and your spending power. Cookies are used technically for this. The idea is to get insight to deliver ads with the highest conversion ratios. E.g purchases from you. Hence they need intelligence about you. They track which pages you visit and try to deduct your interests. Missing information is amalgated by buying / sharing data from other companies or supplied by yourselves e.g. if you create accounts. Your idendity is then proposed for customers as a demographic like "male, caucasian, 20-30y, income 2-3k usd,.interests: sport, video gaming". The companies who book ad campaigns can now book campaigns with selective demographics which propose them the highest yield or plainly just to those who should see specific ads.

This all works because the vast majority of sites are ad supported or use for instance google analytics. Which would count as a tracker too. Typically sites use multiple even. The largest offenders i've encountered used north of 40 different widgets & trackers on their site.

SG uses very little. Only 1 ad tracker associated with a smaller uk-based ad network with less of visibility of the web & google analytics. Latter is the bigger problem as its virtually everywhere. And allows them to watch you over the largest part over the web. Also note that real intelligence operations make use of tracking already done piggybacking ad companies effort. They just haven't monetary goals.

The "I'll take ad revenue from scummy companies but not from loyal, offering visitors" argument doesn't really fly with me. However it's not my site, so do as you wish.

In the end, you're still asking for something.

I hate every ad so no but I would donate a few dollars to be a premium user (which means you won't see any ads even with adblock off and that is the only benefit of being a premium user).

Good idea, although my main browser is Opera and it doesn't have any ad-block, I always see some archeage or some p2f game ads, that popup in every giveaway, below enter button, I once clicked ad instead of enter button, tricky one :D. And I can say they don't annoy me, well, maybe little bit, but I'm okay with it, if this helps website then I'm happy that I never blocked any ads in this website since I joined.

No browser has an adblock natively. Opera has several extensions though that do that.

I'm in the "would donate a little but can't stomach ads" group...

For the time being, my unrestricted quickie bundle left-over giveaways are the best way I have of supporting this great community.

Seems like donations or premium users is not something that is ever going to happen.
Giving away games is what this community was created for and you give away A LOT. Good job! :)

Of course, giving away games doesn't directly help pay for the running of the site.

But at least it helps to attract people who who would like the free games and may not have an ad blocker installed and may click on the ads and may spend money on the advertised goods when they really only came here for a freebie.

Maybe... ;-)
