That's actually pretty clever. I wonder how valve plans to deal with this type of scam in the long run, maybe a script that checks items' descriptions as they go up and flags the suspicous ones.

That's funny, assuming they would do anything at all except punish users with more tradebans. Maybe next all items you buy aren't even usable in-game for a month.

Luckily, valve was "fast" and the game is removed with it scam

valve don't give a duck.
One more gem for same "dev" is still in store https://store.steampowered.com/app/763980/Space_Vomit/
So this "dev" could do the same again.

I remember when Darkarta: A Broken Heart's Quest Collector's Edition developer did the same and add Portal 2 item to his in-game store.
In few days devs understood that they made stupid move with adding stolen items to HOG and removed them

if they had a little control, we would not see dozens of shitty-"games" released every day.

Dev could add item with any image without control? Yeas, and thats mean we will see more looks-like dota/pubg/cs-go items in future

Oh yeah definitely, compare it to 10 years ago. They actually do a lot more nowadays, even tho they let devs spread a lot of shit games on their platform

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

nowadays they do nothing. You can release game with trojan or with crypto-miner. You can release game even without .exe file - thats totally fine.
You can make joke-achievements and use google-translate with mistakes.
You can pay for reviews and add in-game items for easy profitz.
And you can use same assets to make 10 similar games with different names, generate 10k keys for each game and sell those keys to otakumaker ^^
Yes, steam store sucks xD

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

they're stuck between a rock and a hard place. The volume is too big to check each game manually without raising costs - but if it gets too expensive, indies can't thrive. So they need to create simple rules that are easy to enforce. But every time they add or change a rule there's massive backlash (see e,g. the recent fiasco when they tried banning porn - aka visual novels)

There is no easy answer and no simple solution. It's not that they don't care, but that they haven't figured it out at least, not without derailing the money train

There is an easy answer and simple solution, it's called curation.

that's not actually an easy and simple solution. It's actually arbitrary - how do you decide whether an early access game is going to have a future? what about something quirky and off-beat? And there are plenty of stupidly simple games that still have a market.

And that's not even considering the cost

What's wrong with joke achievements, in-game items, and bad translations? Those are all bad things, but most stores won't ban you for them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

there's no community store in gog/origin/uplay so ofc "most stores won't ban you for them."
Thare's nothing wrong with

  • joke achievements - if we don't see asset-flip-trash-rain with 5000 achievements
    • in-game items - if devs don't try to make fake tf2/dota items or use store manipulation
    • bad translations - there are games where devs don't even try to translate correct

Good. Leave it to the Eastern Europeans to find every possible loophole in a system. We have literally 1000+ years of experience in it. :3

At least this means either people will start to actually pay some damn attention to what they are trading (hah, good joke!) or Valve will have to actually do something meaningful to look at what is happening at its own storefront (hah, even bigger joke!).

Then again, I am almost entirely sure that they will just introduce some new automation algorithm to pretend they care or some other insanely overconvoluted safety action to trades.

the best scams are the ones that aren't too good to be true. Selling a $500 item for $50 is suspicious. Selling it for $450 is plausible - and far more profitable

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xClkx9UzsmE

Valve does not care about shovelware and asset flips, I do not see them cracking down on this form of scam fast enough to make a real difference, right now it's small with just a couple of games doing it. Wonder what it will look like once we give it a few weeks...
