Like most online accounts it is listed in the Terms of Service that you agree to when you register that the account remains the property of the company, therefore selling the account will result in a permanent ban if they find out.

The main reason is because if someone buy your account,the money will go in your pocket instead of Steam's pocket. lol

What does having a gift have to do with selling your account?

It would be interesting to see what would actually happen if this ended up in court. In the EU at least the current laws are a bit unclear in this regard. You are not allowed to prohibit the re-selling of digital goods, but Valve have worded their ToS in such a way that it's more like a rental service, you don't actually own the games that you buy, you're just paying for the privilege of playing them. So what would actually happen if someone were to take this to court?

Depends on where you try to trade it.
Obv it won't work on steam, but it's not illegal. Can't answer two questions with one answer tho so the poll is irrelevant.
