TL;DR THIS GIVEAWAY HAS SPECIAL LIMITATIONS AND YOU WILL GET NOTHING IF YOU ENTER BUT DON'T QUALIFY

So, I decided to give away the Deus Ex collection. This is Deus Ex GOTY, Deus Ex Invisible War, and Deus Ex: HR everything. I have decided to make it a private giveaway, but publically share the giveaway on the forums, in order to enforce special limitations. These limitations have already been approved by support.

Limitation #1: You cannot have abused the Guns of Icarus Online beta keys from earlier this week. If you created giveaways to share online beta keys, don't enter, I'll reroll if you win. Note: I will not be searching the forums for beta key threads, and I will be checking if you made legit Icarus giveaways. If you made a legit Guns of Icarus (not online) giveaway and did it properly, you're fine.

Limitation #2: You cannot have abused indie bundle keys before the rule change. This will have a certain amount of wiggle room, since it's hard to define abuse, but if you have given away like 5 of the same set of games that all happen to be in the same indie bundle (who would actually buy 5 copies of Ironclads, Beat Hazard, Before the Storm, and Razor2 and decide to give them all away without getting an Indie Gala bundle?), yeah, you're out.

Limitation #3: I want to reward people who have been active in the community, and so I will be enforcing a requirement of one comment per two giveaways entered. If you entered, say, 100 giveaways, you'd better have at least 50 comments or else you're not going to be given the game if you win. Note that this will be measured after the giveaway ends, so be careful if you're close to the minimum when you enter. To test if you're reading, this is the giveaway code: 1LKUe. I'm not making a link for it. Do not help anyone who asks what the link is in the comments, it's their fault for not reading the limitations. I must stress that this is not an excuse to begin spamming the forums to build up your post count. You'll be liable to whatever punishment the mods decide, and if I catch you, I will force a reroll as well as ticket you if the mods haven't already been notified that you're crapflooding to build your post count.

It's important to know that none of these restrictions count number of wins, or age of account, or contributor value. This specifically does not have a minimum contributor requirement because the other limitations.

Good luck, everyone!

UPDATE (3:30pm PST GMT-0700 August 4): My computer vomited all over itself and decided it doesn't know how to boot anymore. I'm currently in the process of grabbing all of my files off of it in preparation for a nuke and pave clean install of Windows 7. As a result, I won't be as active as usual. However, this should be taken care of by tomorrow, and it will definitely be taken care of before the giveaway ends. None of the rules have changed, I'm just occupied with more important things. Thanks for your patience, everyone.

Thanks for the well-wishes/commiserations about my dumb 'puter, too.

UPDATE #2 (4am PST August 5): I'm back, mostly. That was really annoying. :( Complete reformat. But, fresh start on Windows, at least. Carry on asking me where the giveaway link is. :D

I'm not prohibiting people from entering if they happen to have a minority of the games in the pack; if you only have the base game of HR, you're fine, because this is three games and the HR DLC. But I would not be pleased if someone had, say, everything but Deus Ex GOTY and won.

Imposing conditions (including contribution limits) seems snobbish to me. Spread goodwill not your prejudices (including favoritism towards those who contribute to the site - time or gifts wise).
Let me say one final thing - BUDDY, THERE ARE BETTER WAYS TO GET ATTENTION.

It is not a public giveaway. It's a private giveaway.

You're welcome to create giveaways with your own limitations (or lack of). Go nuts. When you spend real money in order to give the product of that money for free, you get to have a say, within the rules, about how it's handed out.

Actually i think the requirements are more than fair. I even think it should be possible to set some requirements besides contribution when creating a giveaway, like comment to entry ratio. Least you can do when people give away stuff for free is say thanks. And yes I do not have a 1:1 ratio (yet). Took me a little while to figure out how this all worked XD

And here we have exhibit A, demonstrating exactly why some people like to add such restrictions.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

His demands are pretty reasonable. Also, it's his money he spent on the game, he's completely in the right to give it to someone he considers to be active in the community rather than some person he's never seen posting anywhere. It feels nice to give presents to people you know or at least can recognize, sometimes much more than someone who you don't know, might not even show the slightest amount of gratitude and will just disappear from your life after getting the game.

Your "either you give something to someone or you don't" logic sounds more like a "If I can't have it, no one else can either!" attitude. Does that mean you're against group giveaways too?

Also, I don't see how supposedly getting attention (which I doubt was the intention) by making a nice contribution to the site and simply wanting to filter out people who don't bother to read or be present at all in the site can be worse than the attention received by angsty commenters on private giveaways some people are not eligible to enter. ♪

Yeah, I'm not going to enter (since I don't meet the last condition and have everything except the HR DLC), but thanks for this anyway.

And btw, I have given out multiple copies of Beat Hazard (not bundle keys) even though it was in an indie bundle, and I have also bought it for friends (not given away through steamgifts), so Beat Hazard may not have been the best example :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, strictly Beat Hazard would not cause me to immediately reach for the reroll button. But when someone just happens to have given away 4 copies of Beat Hazard, 4 copies of Ironclads, 4 copies of Razor2, etc.... all at the same time? Yeaaaah, that smells like bundle abuse.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ok, that's fine, just like to point out that sometimes specific indie games are too good to miss. I do plan on giving away a lot more Indie Bundle Games (meaning games that have been in bundles, not bundle keys) since I got them in bundles and found out how great they were and would like to share them with people. There will be Binding of Isaac, Hoard, Defense Grid, etc. coming at some point when I finally get money. There will be other games, of course, but I feel like not enough people play these great games :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

If it comes down to the winner being potentially disqualified under #2, I will be asking Support to make a decision on whether or not they consider a reroll for bundle abuse appropriate. This requirement is unfortunately a little loose because there aren't any solid numbers I can pin down exactly where abuse happens -- because there are so many bundles and so many games, and the giveaways could be utterly legit Steam inventory items and such. It's sort of a "I'll know it when I see it" sort of thing.

Comment has been collapsed.

^ this.

I post longer posts usually that take anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes to type up. Not generic, disingenuous "thank you" spam. I might have a lower ratio than required here but heck, quality > quantity.

What about that, elix?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thank you for providing quality over quantity. Unfortunately, the site doesn't give me any more information than the straight raw stat on comments. If I had better numbers on how many were forum comments and detailed posts, and how many were "thanks for skyrim", I'd take advantage of that data to better target my restrictions. Unfortunately, I don't.

I have to make a cutoff point somewhere, and I decided that 1:2 was reasonable. Unfortunately, this does mean that people like you are excluded, and it seems that "thanks for Skyrim" spam is being supported. However, my goal was to exclude people with 2000+ entries and under 100 comments and the like, and yes, there are many users here that comment less than 5% of the time. I'll be making different giveaways with varying conditions, and I'm sorry that you got caught on the wrong side of the mathematics this time.

Permalink

Thanks for the reply.

Hmm. So what does someone like me do then? Just start following the herd of far less genuinely active members spamming thank you's everywhere anyway? Or that have in some cases even written bots to do so for them? You know, possibly a big slice of the people that are being allowed in this giveaway?

See my point? It's a self-defeating limitation. You're imposing it for a good reason - no leechers, or inactive members that don't contribute to the community. However, in doing so, you overshoot your original intentions and allow precisely the people you're trying to avoid to enter instead of people who absolutely do qualify in every respect other than spa- I mean comment ratio.

There should be a better way of gauging community participation. Off the top of my head: e.g. no more simple comment count, but rather 3 counts. 1 for short comments (shorter than, say, 100 chars?), 1 for medium length comments (say 100 - 350/400 chars?), and 1 for comments longer than that. Also, they should add in a clicky on profiles to allow you to actually go and check out someone's comments. This way, detecting spammers would be easy as heck - as well as actual active members.

This whole comment ratio thing is so dumb, in my opinion. Not you, mind, I'm not calling you dumb - you're going for the best option you see presented (which I hope you agree - is still much much more than simply flawed). I'm just tired of being seen by some (again not directly referencing you here - just venting a little) as a leecher, ungrateful, ignorant, or <fill in X negative, scummy, generalising character trait> simply because I'm not either a spambot (human or scripted) or a forum-hound type (anymore). It's just not my thing anymore to spend hours on forums and make tens of posts per day, sometimes in whole back-and-forth one-line convo's. I rather spend some time on a decent, well formulated post like this when I post; as well as thank someone who's giveaway I won personally - and genuinely gratefully - then probably add them to my friends list and catch up with them every so now and then (or game with them). Or, sometimes, I do say thanks on giveaways if it's a private giveaway where I know the gifter, where there's no 2,000 entry malarkey going on, or some other situation where my showing of gratitude with a "thanks for the giveaway! nice one man :)" has some actual context or meaning without being lost in a sea of identical "THANKS THANKS THANKS" posts.

Which unfortunately all makes for quite a low ratio.

Thoughts?

EDIT:
Oh shit see your edit now. Sorry to hear 'bout your PC. Good luck getting it up and running.. Hey see it as a fresh start, nice and clean.

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I don't like the "thanks 4 x" spam in particular, but I work with the tools I've got. I'd love it if forum comments were a separate statistic from giveaway comments, and maybe cg can improve on that at some future point (he's got bigger priorities right now).

But the thing is, I had to give some sort of black-and-white quantifiable condition for the limitation, otherwise it's "you can enter this giveaway unless I decide I don't like you" which is hardly a fair way of doing things. Yeah, I could probably get a blacklist of people going to do exactly that and be allowed to do it, but I don't want to be like that. I've only got a limited number of statistics on my hands, and unfortunately that means some good community members are going to be excluded. This comment ratio limitation is serving its purpose, to a degree, at keeping the kind of leechers that drive me the most crazy out of the giveaway, but it's also catching people like you out. It's not perfect, and I'll be thinking about how I should go about with future private-special-restrictions giveaways, for sure. I'm sorry that the comment ratio requirement has bit you and a number of other worthy community members in the ass.

Before I even read what you wrote - thanks for the reply. Now to reading.

Hmm even if forum comments and giveaway comments were separate, it wouldn't help much for for example, people like me.. It'd show mostly forum posts and you'd see I'm an actual contributing member in that sense, sure.

But then, in the other thread where I was commenting about rule humping NAZIS (;P), I noticed 2 other users spamming everything I posted with 1 or 2 word replies all the time. They were being abrasive and provocative towards me to lure me into responding I guess - posting contrariwise statements to my own as if they were quoting me, but totally changing what I'd said.

Looking at their profiles, they both have a ridiculously high amount of comments. Something like 3200 : 1100 entries on one, and 2200 comments on the other on 1780 entries. Looking at one of their Steam profiles shows "anon" on his page, as if he's a wannabe script kiddie who thinks he's got 1337 skills. Wouldn't surprise me if either had an aforementioned script or bot to spam "Thank you!"s.

Even if not, I also wouldn't have trouble floating my amount of comments up nice and high if all I did was spend 30 minutes a day looking for posts to troll and respond to in a nuisance-like fashion, so as to keep the ball rolling and the 1 - 5 word comments flowing.

That's why I proposed that alternative, more detailed method of counting comments. And <strong>that<strong> part of my post is what I was actually way more interested in getting a response to from you, lol.

Now, in direct response to you: I see what you're saying and fully get your points. I too wouldn't wanna do a blacklist thing and get your point there, too. But do you get what I say when I say that probably a good portion of people eligible to enter your giveaway now are simple "thank you" humpers? Good chance a significant deal of them are even real leechers / spammers? The very people you wanted to avoid?

So, PC back up and running?

Okay, so you've got about three logical fallacies going on here. I'm not going to address them, because I don't feel like importing that argument in here.

I've already addressed my rationale behind more detailed comment info in this thread multiple times, and what I said to you is no different. If you feel you have a suggestion to make regarding it, file a support ticket. That's the best way to let cg know, because he's got his hands full running the site--he's not going to be able to read all of these threads. Making suggestion threads is counterproductive, and so I stay out of it.

And, yes, nuke and pave reinstall of Windows 7. It was actually due soon, anyway, since this machine had almost three years of cruft accumulated, so I was partially prepared. I just didn't want to do it that way.
