Should it?
ffxi's still kicking as well, it's got 2 years on WoW.
Initial release date: May 16, 2002

I miss the early days of ffxi. I got burnt out sometime mid way through Seekers of Adoulin, when all the gear started getting TONS of stats blasted all over it (to the point where they had to add a feature to scroll the infobox). Credit where credit is due though, I played ffxi for ages. WoW got maybe a year, maybe two? FFXIV I just recently stopped because I ran out of things to do. Though after stopping FFXIV last month... I'm kind of liking the idea of just not being chained down to an mmo, so there's a chance I might not go back.

I've played a decent bit of FFXI, but I've not made it very far, I feel as though my server choice was poor, it seems to be rather inactive, I very rarely see anyone or find anyone to play with. I believe I made it to Lv 65 and pretty much stopped, although I enjoy it so I do go back occasionally. I'm on Bahamut if you're curious, and it sadly is pretty dead there.

I think they're all pretty dead now adays. Especially in anything pre-endgame.

There's still thousands of players for Warcraft III, which released 2 years earlier ^_^

They get alot of money from other games (i.e. Diablo.)

They really don't lol. 15$ a month, 5 million people. How are you going to compare that to D3 or SC2? Those games don't provide a profit anymore until xpacs are released. SC2 is dead and I doubt it'll sell many copies (expansion). And D3 (reaper of souls I believe?), even if it sold 1 million copies at 40$, thats what WoW would make in 1 month.

Cross promotions. There was recently a promotion where playing Diablo 3 could earn you mounts/heroes in Heroes of the Storm and that brought a slew of HotS players into Diablo 3 for the first time. Quite a few of those would have been the type that put money into HotS as well and not just casual free players.

I doubt it. Where does it say that it brought players into Diablo 3 for the first time? Most gamers who play Blizzard games already have Diablo 3.
And even if it were true, you're trying to tell me that that this is on par with what WoW makes? 3million subs in US alone for WoW. Diablo 3 would have to sell 2.25 million copies to match what WoW brings in a month. I doubt theres 2.25 million players in HOTS.

The players themselves said it when posting on reddit and such looking for advice. This is just one example of the cross promotion. I wasn't claiming it matched WoW, I was pointing out that Diablo 3 still brings in money out ised of expansion releases.

Does it really matter? My point is they're still making money. arnolke says its 5m, maybe 3-4m. I'm not talking about players, I'm talking about subscriptions. 5million accounts paying 15$ a month, no one in their right mind would give that up.
If you want to get to the player base, well who knows how many real players there are. When I played, I had 2 accounts, 1 horde and 1 alliance on the same server. Yes theres botters, or was when I played, farming gold or leveling characters.

They don't pay $15/mo in China, and that's where the most subs are.

If the newest expansion went down to a $10 price drop and it was somewhere in the 12 dollars to play a month. I might pick it up for a bit. I don't think I'd like it to be set up like the other F2P's. I like to be able to pay a fee and have all included, just not the fee it's at currently. I didn't have a great experience with the community the last time I played. Everyone wants more people to play, but yet they seemed pretty impatient with anyone not in the top tiers. I didn't know all the boss fights and even though I read up on them, I messed up on a few. I need to actually do something to get it right. After I went at it a few times, I got the hang of it and everything was great, but by then I was pretty glum from messing up.

The idea has been around for ages. WoW players have asked for it basically since the first expansion.

It is a cool idea indeed. Blizzard always said no on the grounds that not only would they need separate servers for every expansion but then people would complain that it wasn't the specific patch within that expansion that they wanted, which is a valid point to be fair.

Should go F2P since they are losing Subs very very fast.
Look at GW2, it went F2P because they were losing Active Players.
FFXIV amazing is still having a Stong Sub based Activity Players just like FFXI despite that has lower numbers but still sting enough for Subs payment.

Free to play means lower quality content. You get what you pay for.
Whether WoW has good content lately or past a certain expansion is a subjective topic.
But like stated earlier int his topic, Blizzard would be crazy to give up the amount of money they bring in monthly. Even if the game only had 500,000 subscribers, that's still $7,500,000 per month.

Undac said: "Me too, but sadly I don't think SP games are very profitable for big companies such as Blizzard anymore."
You answered: "Nope, MOBAs are..."
Undac said that that SP games are not very profitable now and you denied that by nope and as a exapmle gave MOBAs. This is at least how I understood that.

Well, I still learning English but as every person who learn language I learn rather literary language.
Sometimes little problem are different forms - for example in English there is not such thing like double negation, furthermore in my language that double negation can be negation or confirmation ^^
Going back to my misunderstanding - I would probably said something like that: you are right, but mobas are which is why more and more of them are popping up.

Played WoW for two or three months when Blizz gave me the game and exps. up to Pandaria for free and I have quite enjoyed it actually, just not enough to pay 45 euros for the new expansions, and playing on after reaching the max level set for Pandaria seemed pointless, since anything I would have gotten myself would be crap when I actually got the exp.
I will probably pick up the new exp. when it will be available for around 15 euros at most (so probably by the time the next expansion comes out as well) and spend another couple of months (or probably less since I won't be leveling from 0) in the game just to realize I am not willing to pay full price for the new exp. anyways.

There's still a lots of players, but you don't see them because latest expansion focused on "single-player mode", so instead of meeting and raiding, people just say hello in chat and go click their garrisons around for a hour or two and go out.

It shouldn't go F2P and it probably won't for years to come. Maybe they'll figure out a way to make it more affordable. But they just brought out the "token", which is basically game-time for in-game gold. What more could you ask for if you're spending hundreds of hours a month on the game? You basically play for free.

I played WoW for a while on Blitzzard's servers then switched to private servers and played there for years. Absolutely no point in subscribing.

Why are the graphics so shitty? why in the world would you pay 15$/month, you've already paid 60$(?) for the base game? Questions, questions...

I've paid some months (years ago). Despite I know think WoW its a shitty game now I can't say that I am sorry. It was a good game, and you pay monthly for a lot of content, patches and new items, quests and shit. Then everything went all monetized and shitty. I recommend not to play this game now.

I dont care anymore whatever road it takes, WOW will never be the same, i was happy to pay my subscription back then because was fun and amazing experience, now and after some changes (check cataclysm) lost interest, i loved questing in the old Azeroth, was kind of relaxing and special for me (also side events with Horde-Alliance) now its a hand to hand questgrind.

I don't know, but it feels like no one is playing it anymore.
Edit: do you still play it?
