Hi there, I recently acquired a storage array including about 10 terabytes of storage.
I now want to set it up as installation point for my steam games folder.

Any Idea how fast it will be using a Gigabit LAN Connection or i am i completely experimental on this?

I have a very similar setup.

The chokepoint for me isn't the lan, but the server. It's running RaidZ on old hardware, so the lan is actually faster than the server can access the disks. Reading isn't so bad, but writing... ugh. So, it's definitely possible, but much less headache to run it locally.

Now, if you're running a different setup (raid0/1 for example), you won't have the same problem I have. Or, if you're running it on newer hardware...

There are other problems too, now that I think about it. Sometimes one of the hubs might conk out for a moment. Usually that's fine, it's back up in a split second. In a game though...

Or, I'll want to play a game, but the DVR is doing something with the server over the network, and now it's a hassle, or impossible. Again, the chokepoint isn't the gigabit lan, it's the server.

If your server is fast enough, and your array is fast enough, it can be as good as local.

The System should be quite fast, it's sporting 2 Dual Core Xeons per server, and the two servers should be redundant,
since i never used such a setup at home, i am curioust how that would work out.

Xeons have been around since the 90s... how old is this equipment?

Two independent servers you say? Redundant in what way? RAID mirroring? How are the two servers connected? In a blade stack? Over the lan? How much RAM? What is the OS?

There's not enough information to say whether you will have headaches or not, haha. There are a lot of variables!

well, basically it's some older storage system i acquired for free from my boss, i am not sure about the specs, since i have no idea where he put the manuals, it's an EMC Clariion CX4 which was manufactured in 2008. if that helps, as i said. I'll post more as soon as i get this thing running and get a full overview on the specs and stats. i should have done that before posting.
proves what an idiot i am, i guess.

EDIT: It's running windows server 2003, Servers a connected in A Bladestack, They're running 2 Xeon Wolfdale Dualcore at 3.6 GHZ with 32 GB RAM per Server.
I guess, my setup will be fine :)
