Free BF3 key

Do I need the client to activate the game or can I just do it on the website and use the client later, when I'll be installing the game?

As far as I know EA closed it. Too many people using it. Too many people trying to raffle it on other Origin raffle sites and stuff.

Seems as though my comp cannot run BF3. After DLing for 1 1/2 and setting all settings to low i still cannot get above 15 fps.
