Somehow i think Gaben and his lawyers will not like the idea.
Can't put my finger on it, but the current policy (it's not a game you own, it's a service or whatever they call it) says that they own everything.

Better back it up with the Steam ToS. Which can change at any time for any reason in any direction.
I am not saying that the idea is bad, but maybe it needs some fine tuning.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, I dunno if the ToS effects the site itself as it being a 3rd party to the situation. On the Steam Support pages, it says that you can trade/sell games that "haven't been opened and activated". I will contact Steam and see what they say about it, if that doesn't work. I might just make a site like Ubderdeal but not as an archive.

See you have it all figured out.
Good luck, then.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well you could kinda do that on steamtrades.
Say best offer wins. :p

Maybe he'll add a "Buy now" button with a set price ?

It uses a virtual point system like SG, i.e. that's pretty dumb for what calls itself an auction site.
Imagine SG, just that you can specify how many of your 300 points you want to put up and you lose when bidding max than the maximum points value.

Yes! This sounds really nice! Everyone would love this!

What if they add it like market, part of steam, and the auctioneer could set up beginning price. I think if valve takes a certain percentage it would be beneficial to all EDIT: Oh, you meant auction for games with free points, i guess that kinda works too if its a site like steamgifts

What would stop someone from creating scripts to snipe or bid everything up to their maximum? This would eliminate the chance of every getting something cheap.
Until you have a plan to deal with that, your idea would never work.
If you meant bid with a virtual currency, then I certainly wouldn't support the idea. I can already see the "Buy Points for $xx" and the dollar signs in your eyes.
Comment has been collapsed.
Haha no no, I wouldn't allow people to buy points, it will be like 300 points when someone sign up and 10 points a day. Each point equals to a bid. If someone wants to try to create a script for it, we can later see if there is any holes and fix them but I guess this could effect SteamGifts as well? With the entries?
Comment has been collapsed.
The script would give those who use it an unfair advantage over those who don't use it. I'm not talking a SG+ script, I'm talking about an abuse your system being it's flawed script.
Giving a set amount each day would just encourage people create mass accounts in order to have tons of points to snipe auctions. Having the points work in this way would also encourage people to hoard them. You'd seen countless mediocre games either finishing without bids or lower than they should since people are waiting for Skyrim.
I can guarantee you'd have a higher rate of support tickets coming in as there are a lot more issues and complications that can arise with an auction. I hope you have a support team ready to handle all of those!

Well, I understand but we will make it Steam integrated like this website. In that way, people wont be able to make mass accounts with one email address. If they made more then one email address and then make another Steam account, it seems a lot of effect for a site like this. Unless we have an IP system, we are only getting feedback at the moment and ideas. You have been great help with your advice.
Comment has been collapsed.
The Steam integration does nothing to prevent multiple accounts and I have 8 accounts using one e-mail as well.
If you made a script to snipe the auctions, then you could make a script to automatically create Steam accounts. Not to mention, there are already people with 50+ accounts just to idle on TF2.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, we will just have mods to look on suspicious accounts and look at them to see if they use the same email address or IP. We will think of a way where people wont be able to snipe on the games but if we see an account that is suspicious, we will just block their IP address. All these problems effect SteamGifts as well with the multiple accounts who then will have multiple chances to win the prize then anyone else who doesn't do the same.
Can't we just live in a peaceful world and people don't cheat... lol
Comment has been collapsed.
The Steam integration doesn't allow you to view their e-mail, you could use IPs though. Where are the mods coming from? They will obviously be volunteers and I can assure you, 99% of the people on this forum would bring the site into the ground if they were given powers so hopefully you already have some people willing to do that.
Sniping is a pretty common practice in auctions so banning anyone who does it probably wouldn't benefit your site at all. The only way to prevent sniping is to extend the auction when a bid is placed within the last minute. If you do that, then it's really not an auction in my opinion and defeats the whole purpose.
All of these problems do not affect SteamGifts, only the multiple users and they have methods in place to detect and prevent that.
Unfortunately we don't live in a perfect world and due to that, you have to think ahead and fix all the potential issues before they arise. If everyone abuses the shit out of your site in the first few weeks and you have shitty moderators banning people who are legitimately sniping, then it's safe to say it won't last very long.
If everything I've said is the first time you're thinking about it, then you should probably go back to the drawing board.

That sounds like a good idea, I would definitely give it a try.

If its by points that can be aquired without purchasing them with real money, then it's an okay idea. As no one would bid real cash on tradable games, unless they're well below sale price. TF2 / Dota 2 items might work even with real money though.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't really see a point in give2get (since you could just spend the money to buy yourself the game you wanted in the first place), but if the community grows over time and becomes friendly, then I guess it might work. In a way it might even be similar to SG, contributor giveaways to be specific.
Comment has been collapsed.
I understand you fully, but with SteamGifts, people can only enter once in a competition, with SteamAuctions people have more of a chance to win and people will want to give free games more then SteamGifts because they will be given the points they game has been given. It wont be that an item will get all the credits that are bidded as that will be over the top if an item gets over 1,000 bids, we might do it as a percentage or something. We are still thinking but appreciated all the feedback mate.

I like your idea! :D also script that checks if you are having multi accounts on steam becuse i'm using 3 accounts just to IDLE on TF2 :>
Or like a IP scripts if you join with the SAME IP you will be banned from the site :) and you need to write a ticket WHY you need a second account maybe you have a brother that also wanna join it and so one :)

Haha you are listed above if you didn't know. Cred will be awarded on the site and yes, you can be a beta tester when it is first launched. I will add you on Steam so I can communicate through there with matters about the website for testers ears only :)

I like the idea, but the multiple account issue is a real problem... some ideas about it:
-Unused points are lost after a certain amout of time
-Accounts that haven't bid in a while will have their points reseted as a new account
I believe a safe approach would be to let active users save their points until a certain limit.
Another direction you could take is not making a auction site, but make higher bids receive better chances in the draw.
1 Ticket = 1 chance to win
3 Tickets = 4 chances
5 Tickets = 7 chances
And so it goes... the bids could have different values in tickets depending on the game...
This way higher bids would have better chances, but still no guarantees of winning.
If I think in something else I'll post it here

So, auctions with Steam games? This sounds really good! But...what if these auctions are made with a sort of credits earned by playing minigames? People play minigames, receive amounts of credits and bid for different Steam games.

There is a solution. This idea is just wonderful. It is what any gamer that doesn't want to spend hundreds of dollars on games needs. If you intend to do this, consider me in! I'll be one of the first people to join the auctions.

https://www.listia.com/ but its not only for steam
Comment has been collapsed.
That is just a marketing pyramid, nothing to do with Steam community. SteamAuction will be a fun site for Steam users to auction their tradable Steam games and gain extra points from the winnings. Nothing for making money, just community :)

We have just made a Steam group page for news about the website etc

Sounds interesting. I didn't see anywhere how you get new points though.
What happens when you get through your 300 bidding points? do you get more every day? have to buy them? earn them?
Comment has been collapsed.
ah, okay. Thanks for making it clear.
Sounds like you're getting a lot of input from people, so I hope you can make it work.

Well, after some feedback from people with great information and feedback. This is what we have so far.
People who sign up will be given 300 bidding points and 10 bids a day or maybe a bid an hour. These are points you can use to bid on games or items.
People will require to sign in through Steam like SteamGifts etc.
The game that is up for bid will need to be in the persons Inventory before adding a game or item.
People can only bid on a game a certain amount, this is done by your IP. If you have several members in the house who may use the site, you will need to open a ticket.
Anyone interested in giving advice, helping out or being beta testers. Email admin@steamauction.com
Any other feedback is welcomed!
Thank you to Zaek, joaoaroucha, peroxide. Anyhoo, Yuu
