"Don't know any Belgium jokes, and if I did I think I'd have the good sense not to... hang on. Is Belgium with all those child abuse murders lately? I do know a Belgium joke. What's Belgium famous for? Chocolates and child abuse, and they only invented the chocolates to get to the kids."

We're really quite nice you know. As people that make up a nation.

Part of you are nice. The other part... not so much. Then again, this is valid for pretty much any country in the world.

Yep, apparently French are snobby assholes but that's mostly just Paris. Americans are uneducated retards but that's just the South. Irish are crazy drunk people but that's... actually accurate...

He doesn't know. In his country "hating on America" is being a hipster. Anyone that lumps a population as a whole based on misconceptions (I bet he thinks we all live like Baywatch or 90210), is a very small minded individual.

Also. I don't like Belgium, solely based on this guys prejudice.

How is simply stating he doesn't like it "hating on America"? For all you know he visited and had a bad experience or something. You have no idea he's judging based on misconceptions. You're forming a lot of assumptions there.

And you say he's a small minded individual.

The very idea of hating a country is small minded by default.

Hating and disliking aren't the same.

Nope they aren't indeed.

Well he never said he hated it so "the very idea of hating a country is small minded by default" doesn't quite apply in relation to the above comment.

My comment still applies to anyone who hates a country though.

You are very pedantic, yet I said "hating on". It is slang for "dislike". I hope that's cleared up. If you want to quote me, do it accurately, please.

I don't use slang, I don't know a lot of it, ergo I did not know that. My mistake, I'm freely admitting that. It is cleared up now though, thank you for that lesson in semantics.

The OP is celebrating an American holiday. He posts "I don't like the USA". Isn't it a larger person to simply let another enjoy his day?

Yeah but I do think you overreacted a bit and got slightly more defensive than necessary. I'm going to guess you're American, so you have every right to be defensive of your country. I'm British (although I lived in the states for a while and have traveled there a lot and quite like it) so maybe it's hard for me to directly relate. I dunno. I just think all the assumptions you made were a bit uncalled for. Just my opinion.

Overreacted? My only statement is that he needs to let someone else enjoy his holiday, even his country, without making a negative remark about it. Anyone that has a differing opinion is "over-reacting"?

I would have had the same response if he said "I dislike Belgium" on a Belgium holiday.

"In his country 'hating on America' is being a hipster. Anyone that lumps a population as a whole based on misconceptions (I bet he thinks we all live like Baywatch or 90210), is a very small minded individual."

Whole bunch of rash assumptions. Saying that hating a country based on misconceptions makes you small minded is accurate, yes, but you don't know that he was basing his statement on misconceptions or that he thinks your country is like those TV shows or that in his country hating America makes you a hipster or any of that.

In all honesty though I don't give a shit what you do so have at it. Like I said, just sharing my opinion.

That wasn't your only statement. You also implied that he is "very small minded" based on assumptions.

its only natural for someone to become defensive of someone knocking their country I'd think.

Not for everyone. A lot of people don't share the will to defend their country for one reason or another.

Ok, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to offend anyone. I didn't realize that today is an American holiday, or I wouldn't have said that. I don't hate Americans, nor do I hate the country...I just don't love it.

Sorry again.

I don't think you have anything to apologise for. You never said you hated it, you're just not crazy about it and I'm sure you have your reasons for it. You have every right to feel that way and people freaking out because of it is just ridiculous.
