Hnnngh.
I live with my grandfather, who is usually able to mostly take care of himself, but just lately an issue with his legs struck, followed by one of them developing super-awful cramps. After having a ton of painkillers thrown into his meds, what we thought was sleep deprivation due to disturbed sleep actually turned out to be an overdose of oxy-based painkillers (thankfully I saw enough red flags in time, referred to a cousin who lives nearby who is a nurse, and caught it before any serious harm was done). I only work a part time job, but leaving him on his own for five hours at a time is kind of bad right now, and trying to navigate all the tiny hiccups that keep occurring is starting to take its toll. Three consecutive unplanned days off work during the busy christmas period, two hours of sleep on the couch after staying up all night, and then whatever I can salvage in the afternoon when we get a visitor to give me a little relief (3 hours tops extra), it's pretty crazy.
I'm just glad for the blessings of caffeine, internet, dead MMOs with free unofficial servers, and the beauty of comedy podcasts that play desktop RPGs for stories.
Why am I saying this? I dunno. It just sucks a little is all. Hard to focus down the last of christmas stuff when me and the old gentleman have to Laurel and Hardy our way through his pain. I'll get there, but still : Hnnng.

Oh yeah. My mother, an aunt, a cousin, some good neighbours. Its just that full time employment tends to get in the way of full time care. The house is fully prepared for his mobility, it's just that with this leg issue of his, he can't really get around without his legs turning to cramping jelly, so he can't even really get into a wheelchair or prep himself in a stairlift. Especially not with the painkillers he's on.
I already offered to suspend my contract at my part-time job just until we get something sorted out, but everyone flatly said no to that, not willing to let me risk my job, heh. It'll be okay, we just need to figure it out until the local hospital can arrange a specialist to give the final word on what treatment he needs.
It's just tricky balancing my few hours of work, my need to sleep, and helping the creaky old bugger to have some basic quality of life. Still, he used to work as a head chef and did some time in the military, so he's made of steel. Maybe fatigued steel right now, but he's a tough grumpus so we'll work it out.

that sucks but it's cool that you're around to help. it's very stressing to take care of someone and also keep your life in order.
my step-brothers had to take care of their grandmother a few weeks ago and it was a mess, but at least things are looking better now so everything should be back to normal for christmas, and they can spend the holiday together as usual. ^^

I already mentioned systemic therapy here as an approach to deal with depression. I found this article and want to share it with you
http://www.psychiatrictimes.com/articles/family-therapy-treatment-depression/page/0/1
As I mentioned before, depression can be a poor solution to a problem that lies in a relationship, commonly in the family. Therefore it's not a neurological or psychological illness. You just haven't found the solution yet. I know, it sounds weird, but you are not wrong! You were or are treated wrong from your family or partner or yourself. The depression is a symptom of this unhealthy relationship, not the cause. But you can't change other people, only yourself. The first step is to figure out what you want, most people know that. The second step is to figure out how to get that and that's the questions you're searching the answer for. Well, maybe you are already knowing the answer for that too, but don't want to hurt people or it's against some family rules. And there you are. Unhealthy relationships.
Really guys, check out Virginia Satir, Salvador Minuchin, Jay Haley, Gregory Bateson, Bรถszรถrmรฉnyi-Nagy, Paul Watzlawik, Helm Stierlin, Michael White, David Epston, Insoo Kim Berg, Steve de Shazer, Milton H. Erickson.

๐ Active giveaways ๐
If you want to share giveaways, please use this template:
copy everything inside the ` (even the opening/closing `grave accents`), edit and and paste it in your reply
Please use the format provided above! It's easier for me to copy-paste multiple giveaways in this thread. Remember, yours aren't the only links I have to put here.
It will take me a few days to update the list. To avoid having your giveaway not "showcased" set its duration to more than 5 days (unless you don't care, it's up to you).

I've dealt with depression for over a decade, plus PTSD and some health complications which also make things even worse than what they are. But at least I had people that helped me. Friends, family, and even strangers from support groups that made things easier.
You should NEVER think you are alone, because there's always someone willing to help if you look around you. This might sound clichรฉ but it's real, there are terrible people but there are also extremely kind ones. ๐
Also, if you can and you feel strong enough, please lend a hand to others in need. I've done this for years when I am confident enough that I can take on other people's problems without affecting my health to the point of getting me down.
Remember it's important to help others, but also take care of yourself.
Diagnosed depression isn't a joke (as in diagnosed by a professional and not by the patient, don't confuse it with other symptoms!). It's a serious condition and it shouldn't be taken lightly because it's not a physical illness. Just like cancer ends up with death, depression will escalate to suicide or cripple you in many ways.
Everyone feels "down" once in a while, but for some people it's a daily pattern of depression. The good news is that it is treatable.
Usually through therapy, medication, or a combination of the two. Antidepressant medication, despite some side effects, can help lift a person from the depths of depression within weeks of starting medication therapy.
If one medication doesn't work for you or the side effects are too much for you to live with, keep in mind that there are many others your doctor could give you to try.
Make sure your doctor knows about any other meds you are taking and always ask questions about your medication therapy, if needed.
Btw, DON'T get self-diagnosed, it's a terrible idea. You might be sad or during a grieving period, so always check with a doctor.
Besides, I don't know about other countries but over here antidepressants are only available if you have a medical prescription, so you will only be left with a possibly wrong diagnostic and no way to deal with it.
