Original thread - Original Post by DesertMouse1

After going through a recent event where someone very close to me was feeling depressed and suicidal, thought I'd make some GA's to get a point across. If you are feeling this way, there is help, and people out there want to help. You're not alone and you are cared about. If you are not of this state of mind, realize that you could be the difference between them getting help, or comitting suicide. You will most likely never know how, who, or how many you helped, but that should make no difference. It just matters that you were there. Go and be the best you that you can be. If anyone out there needs someone, i accept all steam friend requests and will reply as soon as i see your message.
Try and keep the thread alive for a while so that more can see it. May i suggest pictures of cats? Anything really.

I've dealt with depression for over a decade, plus PTSD and some health complications which also make things even worse than what they are. But at least I had people that helped me. Friends, family, and even strangers from support groups that made things easier.
You should NEVER think you are alone, because there's always someone willing to help if you look around you. This might sound cliché but it's real, there are terrible people but there are also extremely kind ones. 💙

Also, if you can and you feel strong enough, please lend a hand to others in need. I've done this for years when I am confident enough that I can take on other people's problems without affecting my health to the point of getting me down.
Remember it's important to help others, but also take care of yourself.

Diagnosed depression isn't a joke (as in diagnosed by a professional and not by the patient, don't confuse it with other symptoms!). It's a serious condition and it shouldn't be taken lightly because it's not a physical illness. Just like cancer ends up with death, depression will escalate to suicide or cripple you in many ways.

Everyone feels "down" once in a while, but for some people it's a daily pattern of depression. The good news is that it is treatable.
Usually through therapy, medication, or a combination of the two. Antidepressant medication, despite some side effects, can help lift a person from the depths of depression within weeks of starting medication therapy.

If one medication doesn't work for you or the side effects are too much for you to live with, keep in mind that there are many others your doctor could give you to try.
Make sure your doctor knows about any other meds you are taking and always ask questions about your medication therapy, if needed.

Btw, DON'T get self-diagnosed, it's a terrible idea. You might be sad or during a grieving period, so always check with a doctor.
Besides, I don't know about other countries but over here antidepressants are only available if you have a medical prescription, so you will only be left with a possibly wrong diagnostic and no way to deal with it.

No matter how bad it gets, I know you can make it through it. Not because I know you personally or anything, but because I know that while very emotional and prone to emotional highs and lows, humans can also be extremely durable - physically and mentally. Every time in my life I've thought I wasn't going to or didn't want to see tomorrow, I still woke up the next day and I still made it through that day ... and the next ... and the next ... until I realized I'd put a whole week together, then a month, and so on.

You have a lot of days left ahead of you, which also means you have a lot of days to work on the things you'd like to change in your life. Work on a little bit of something every single day, and while it may take a while to achieve those goals, as long as you're working on them diligently, you'll eventually get there. Make a list of things if it helps, and choose the things you can work on and set some goals to get them accomplished. Not only will that improve your situation, whatever it may be, but you'll find yourself able to tackle more and more difficult setbacks without despairing and giving up. Also, working on those goals, whether improving yourself or your life situation, will keep you busy and make it that much harder for you to sink into despair.

Edit: Worth mentioning -- by "goals" I don't mean they all have to be grand broad-sweeping life decisions. They could be simple things, like spending an extra 30 minutes a day working out or exercising if you're not happy with yourself physically, or changing a small thing at a time in your diet, or something as simple as making some time to step outside for some fresh air or go to the park and listen to the birds sing or watch a dog play or even just simply sitting quietly by yourself. It could be calling a friend to talk to every day, reading a bit of a book, or educating yourself about something you've always wanted to learn but just never did. There are a million things we can each do every single day to improve ourselves. We don't have to leap up stairs four at a time because each little step will get us closer to where we want to be.

You're going to find that, with each goal you accomplish, regardless how big or small it is, the next becomes easier and the times you fail won't matter near as much. The failures will simply make you appreciate your successes that much more.

And then there's your friend(s).. Go apologize. You obviously realize you've done wrong, and a good friend is surprisingly understanding and resilient. Humble yourself, explain things to her/them, and explain that she isn't why you're upset, and explain how important she is and how sorry you really are. Things can't go much more wrong than they already have, so you've got nothing to lose, and everything to gain. At the very least, there's a good chance you'll make her feel better, and yourself as well. And, as you're working on yourself and your life, you're also going to find more people are attracted to you, and you're going to make more friends, better friends, and much more easily.

That's the biggest wall of text I've typed out in ages on this forum, so I'll just leave it at that and wish you good luck and happy holidays. Now get off your ass and get to work. ;)

It's sometimes hard to say "I made a mistake" and maybe they won't forgive you just yet but make your apologies and give them time. If they care about you, they'll come around. If they don't, maybe you don't need them in your life.
Sometimes, when your circle is small, it feels like the people around you are your lifeline and there is nothing pathetic about needing to be loved and needing people to care about you. Just give them time and give yourself time. You can't expect them to forgive you if you can't forgive yourself.

We're only humans. Everybody makes mistakes and we sometimes hurt the ones we love when we're hurt. That doesn't make you a bad person. It's just our fucked up human nature. The fact you feel terrible about it proves you're not a bad person and knowing your faults is the first step in fixing them.

Trust me I know what it feels like to hate some part of you and feel you can't change it. Sometimes the key is to accept it and try to balance it with other sides of who you are. Allowing yourself to be vulnerable to others, even if it costs you. And letting the people around you know who you are, flaws and all.

I hope you feel better. Don't give up on yourself or on other people. They can surprise you.

I wish talking to strangers over internet could help me lol..

I don't believe this thread is about talking to strangers so much as it tries to convey to people that help is out there, and that you're not alone in feeling the way you do. Ultimately, It really boils down to who you're more comfortable talking with. But please, if you're feeling down, try to talk to someone. We're stronger in numbers and you don't have to go it alone.

After all, what can it hurt, right? And it just might help getting it off your chest. Happy holidays, and best wishes.
