Hello game devs! Or non-game devs who are reading this!

Was just curious as to the spread of you guys. Who here has made some cool game? There've been a number of game development bundles, and loads of free stuff is available to use, surely some of you must've mucked about with something, right? Share your stories! Share your games!

Personally, I've made a couple of small adventure games using AGS (the same engine quite a few Wadjet Eye Games have been made in, as well as Screen 7 games). I've mucked about in RPG Makers in the past, but never properly developed anything in it.

Oh, also, I'd like to invite you to take a ride on my first ever train! It is a short one, and mostly DLC, but I hope some dev (or potential dev) out there would appreciate it, and end up making something beautiful!
Hop on!

does a stupid poker game count ?

If I'm willing to count a 5 room QBASIC game I made ("Which door would you like to enter, type a number from 1 to 3" "3" "You enter door 3. Bo is here. Bo kills you"), then a poker game definitely counts :D

Do visual novels count? I am "working" on one.
Working as in I haven't touched it in months, of course.

They sure do! I'm assuming you're using Ren'Py? I mucked about in it a couple times, but never got around to doing anything significant with it.

Yeah, ren.py.
Otherwise I'm just overcoming few hurdles such as my inability to write or draw but hey, I will finish it one day.

Damn, I want to do a visual novel too, but I'll end in the "I haven't touched it in months" status for sure :|

Go for it! But make your big awesome signature idea your second game, and make the first one intentionally short and quick, just to be able to get into it!

I am doing the same, it's all in concept stage right now. With my limited (college) budget I'm finding it hard to hire a artist. But when it is done I plan on releasing it to steam. Good Luck on your game.

I've mucked about quite a bit years ago. Just got interested in it again after talking with a friend about it. I've been learning how to use GameMaker Studio and I've been working on a script.

I've made some super simple games as school projects (that I'm not proud of) and worked in an indie game company for a couple of months. I work on something in Unity now, but that's just to learn how to use it.

I've completed a few of those "Learn to code by making this simple game" tutorials and made a short renpy eroge for an ex once. Mostly I get started and distracted.

Simplest solution: Open up an old project today and laugh at how differently you thought back then, and start changing stuff! :D

After rediscovering an old game I'd started over a decade ago I would like to finish it and turn it into a video game. It was a grid-based, free form TRPG. Unfortunately the transition from PnP to video game means it would lose a lot of the free form nature. I could still allow people to more or less craft their own class by purchasing stat progression, usable armour & weapon types, etc (something along the lines of D&D 2nd edition Skills & Powers), but the ability to make your own skills from various components (e.g. an Element component + an Area component could make a basic AoE fireball, or Element + Status could inflict a frozen status ailment) would be drastically limited. The best I could hope for would be to make a fairly comprehensive list and/or use a game engine that would allow players to modify the game and add their own skills.

That sounds pretty neat! Hope you get around to it eventually.
I've constantly tried making PnP "helper" programs for myself (map creators and generators that player icons can move about in, etc.), but they always end up restricting the freeform PnP RPG feel.

Qbasic was my entry into programming (and rubbish game dev) as well!
My suggestion is to go with your own art, and then when your game is complete, look around for artists, and show what you have. People will be more willing to sign up to an almost finished product.
And you're very welcome!

I used to work with Unreal Engine 2, 3 and 4. I'm independent guy and I didn't release anything I am proud so far, but I made a lot of tutorials for UDK and I'm willing to help anyone with UE2,3,4. For some time I used to level design only, but at some point in my life I fallen in love with programming. I started from C# and UnrealScript (UDK). I was working on Postal 2: UDK as lead programmer but we failed (starting team was 5-6 person, at the end only me and one guy survived). I wish to work for Alawar or Artifex Mundi, as they're making HO games I really love and also they are coding the games in C# which I'm using extensively. I'm currently writing an scenario for adventure game I'd like to produce either on UE4 or MonoGame (code it by myself). I also spent hours with Cry Engine III and a bit less time with Unity (I'm a personal unity-hater). I did enjoy FPScreator or GameMaker also.

My the worst side when I'm starting the awesome project? I need the person that'd be shouting over my ear "DO THIS NOW, YOU HAVE A WORK TO DO, DON'T WATCH CUTE CATS ONLINE!", because over time I lose interest, and there are so many distractions.

Cheers!

I wrote my first adventure game on the Comodore 64 in BASIC when I was about 12 and then one day my tape got chewed up. I was devastated lol! A few years later I wrote a couple of puzzle games in C++ and then at Uni I wrote a very simple RPG maker type thing (only the beginnings) for my final year project.

But since Uni, my development has been commercial only, no more games :-( I'd like to get back into it again one day, but these days I spend more time playing games than programming and I don't really see that changing any time soon heh!

Right now I'm learning about game development, but I'm "screenwriter" so I need learn a lot about programing and this make me feel a little afraid but with time and discipline I will do.

You really don't! There are a lot of tools out there that almost completely remove the programming part from the equation, and allow you to focus on the story (Ren'Py is an example that came up here, Twine is another). I strongly suggest you muck about in something a bit and get your feet wet!

Thanks for suggestions, I will keep and eye in this apps, Twine looks very interesting for storytelling...

I co-wrote my first game (or at least heavily modified a game from a magazine) on a ZX81 circa 1981/2 and wrote ZX Spectrum & BBC Micro games (including a poker game written in assembley code but abandonned pre-alpha) but all for my own enjoyment. I can remember letting my sister have my BBC micro when I got an Atari ST and after I asked her what she thought of it she did pick out one of my games out of all the commercial/magazine/my games as the best one :) Since I've worked I never seem to find the time to program any more despite working in computing for all (27 years) of my working life. I mainly manage now but still program a bit, mainly in Javascript & ASP classic with a little C# but nothing game related. I've been thinking about giving having a go again and always enter the game develpoment giveaways as actually getting the software will probably kick start me into giving it a go again, especially as my eldest is six years old and just starting to learn about computers in school so some game programming could actually be useful to teach him ...

You shouldn't wait around for the opportunity to hit you in the face, go out looking for it! There are a lot of free (and very well made and complete) game development programs out there, no matter what your tendencies! I'm most familiar with story/adventure focused ones like AGS as I mentioned in my post, and Ren'Py for more story-based or VN style games, but there are others too, and with your knowledge of programming (assembly...yikes), there's already a barrier that's been torn down!

Its the usual issue of finding the time to keep at a project over a prolonged period of time when I have a family and a full time job and commitments as a school governor, an allotment holder and a gaming habit ;) Maybe over xMas when I have a couple of weeks off :)

The important thing is that you have fun. There's no need to rush anything, just working on it when you have free time, but don't let the idea remain forever an idea without getting your hands dirty!

You missed the voting option "I used to work for EA and working there cured me of game development so I went to business apps where I could make twice as much for half the hours." I still dabble on my own projects, though.

I somehow managed to get a job as a programmer using Unity. I've worked on a few mobile games, we currently have one game released on Steam, and another PC game currently in development.

I try to poke around with Unity in my spare time as well, but it feels too much like work now that that's literally what I do at work.
