Well, people are free to do as they wish. I think all collections are silly and a waste of time, but many people consider gaming silly and a waste of time. Whatever makes one happy and doesn't hurt others should remain a part of one's life, so I say live and let live.

That's a nice crusade you're on, but the battle is already lost. It's like telling people to stop pre-ordering to stop with all that day 1 dlc bullshit. It's not gonna happen, unfortunately. On the positive side, I doubt the people who make these "trash" games are getting more than a few pennies. And yes, I know good games get lost in the wave of crap. But as I said, it's a lost battle.

I agree. Plus, there's always gonna be crappy games being made, so some people see it as trying to help the creator or just trying to see if it's a hidden gem

Entering giveaways to win games you never play is pretty much hurting this community by taking games out of the actual players hands though :P
We all understand that backlogs are tricky and that things can fall to the wayside, but entering with no intentions to play is a whole different ballgame.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well I was thinking in the sense of just collecting games from off sites whenever they are free, not steamgifts. But I do agree entering steamgifts giveaways with no intention of playing them does hurt the other players who do actually want to play it.
Comment has been collapsed.
You could say the same about almost anything that is collected. Coins are meant to be spent, toys are meant to be played with, stamps are meant to be posted, and the list goes on.
If people want to collect games, then that's what they want to collect. It's all a matter of personal preference.
Comment has been collapsed.
Why does it matter? People collect items, that the majority would think, are crappy and worthless. But hey, maybe that's what they like to do. Why stop them?
Some people like to increase the number of games they own. So what? It may not mean anything to you or me, but that doesn't mean its any less of a collection. If I have a bunch of Canadian pennies mixed in with my Silver Dollars, it's still my coin collection, and I enjoy it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Okay, so that's a ridiculously stupid statement. Every collectible is meant as a +1. The reason is in the word "collecting". You collect them. They serve no other purpose other than the joy of owning them.
Display or don't display them, in the end they're still in your hands, doing nothing.
This does not hurt gaming in the slightest. Unless you really think that developers getting money for the game they bought for collection is hurting the community. If the devs gave it away for free, then there was no loss even possible. Instead, it's still helpful. They boost their owner numbers and increase the chances that someone will play it.
Also, GTA: San Andreas, Fallout 1, Fallout Shelter, Mirror's Edge, F.E.A.R. 1 and 2, Assassin's Creed II, Drakensang The River of Time, Mortal Kombat Kollection, Neighbours from Hell 2 and SpellForce 2 - Faith in Destiny were all meant to be played in that case.
Personally, this is what I'd say:
Buy games if you want to. You have no obligation to do shit after getting something for yourself. This is a digital product, so it produces no waste, it takes no space and basically what those people did was just give money to someone for just a +1. That's why they wanted a product. If someone wants bananas not for eating, but instead as models to be painted, are they doing it wrong? At least there you could have an argument that it's a waste of a banana.
If you win a game though, that's different. If one specifies that they want the game to be played then of course. Otherwise, you have no obligation either. That person should never have a control over your time.
I'm a person with 46.9% of games played that I've won. It's not a great ratio, I agree. That's why I have started slowly working on games that were previously in that series so I could play them. I have had a single giveaway that I won that stated that they wanted me to play it in x amount of weeks. I did so. Otherwise, people shouldn't have the right to demand anything that they already didn't demand when making the giveaway. I will play everything that I have won. I'll try to at least. It's just that I won't force it because I want to enjoy those games to their fullest. I think the users would want everyone to enjoy the games to the fullest as well.
I was planning to answer to this post basically stating that I agree with the sentiment, but that I don't agree with it in practice.
Seeing this post though, now I have some more insight into what you dislike about it and now I must say I disagree with your statement on a fundamental level.
I think I get your point, but just can't agree with it.

STOP STOP STOP STOP...
After I finally fix Assassin's creed 1, I'll move to AC2, I even got AC3 and 4 on Uplay waiting.
If I deleted Spellforce, I lose my Arcania. And I actually play that game.
If I delete Fear 1, I lose 3 more games.
Assassin's creed is on my to do list and Drakenssang too.
Mortal Kombat /Neightbours from hell are bound to one more game I have which I am playing from times to time.
And IDK why Fallout shelter is on my list even if I never clicked on the PC version, I'm playing it on my phone since release anyway.
And GTA San Andreas... I'm waiting to get money for a new CPU so I can use an ENB without murdering my FPS...
I deleted over 100 games I kept getting free from devs for 0 reason at all, so don't put that number on me!-
And I didn't speak about "Buy games". I speak of "Lets enter giveaways just for the numbers of games in account". A lot of ppl just win the games and don't play them screwing up ppl who wanted to actually play them .
Comment has been collapsed.
Hey hey hey... it's okay... That's my point. It's okay that you have those games and you won't play them for some reason. Whatever the reason is. Time constraints, lacking the interest at that time or whatever else. It's fine. You shouldn't ever have to defend yourself because of it. That was my main point.
As to your last point... you might think you did, but in reality you didn't. You never said it was about winning games. You said this:
"Maybe I'm a bit old school but...
Games are meant to be played, not to be collected and gather dust, so you can show off to your friends, your awesome "I got so many games" pride.
<3"
In that statement, there was nothing referring to this being solely about winning games. Neither was there anything about that in the comment I responded to.
And overall, I already said what I thought about your statement if you only meant games that you win. In that case I said "If you win a game though, that's different. If one specifies that they want the game to be played then of course. Otherwise, you have no obligation either. That person should never have a control over your time.

But it's in off topic? :D
Take a look at my won games. You probably see many games you would call "shitty" or "aren't going to be ever played". And then check my playing stats by using Kelnage's script. One man's trash ...

Yeah... but it's those games are Schrodinger's Cats. You don't know whether they will or won't be played. You might be addressing just one person. You might be addressing thousands.
You can't know if a person will or won't play the game. With your statement, you also went after me. I and so many others were the target of what you said.
It's not a given that it's related to SG. If that were the case then every thread would have something to do with it. In the vast majority of cases, it's not. Just be more clear if you make these random, void, meaningless statements. And this isn't an attack on you as a person (some people think that things like that are). Saying this is as useful as saying "Fuck ISIS". Everyone agrees and nothing is actually done with that statement. It's vapid. There's no solution, reasoning or insight. At least with "Fuck ISIS" you can just say it and not have people asking what you actually meant.
The better example would probably be like "Screw those that don't donate to charity". Someone says that they can't and gives reasons for it and you just respond "Well, I was pointing out those that decide not to, not those that can't for some reason"
Comment has been collapsed.
Okay. I'll enter my serious mode for a moment here.
This is still a satire thread, not an actual "I hate all of you for doing this", even if most of my comments might look serious, they aren't. I'm just distracting myself of my headache and it's amusing to see what people would say, about it. Hell there's this guy that's still trying to prove a point without realizing that I don't even care at this point of the thread.
Comment has been collapsed.
Wait, what? This is a satire thread?
Are you kidding or are you just saying it to just try and leave the conversation? Because nothing... and I mean nothing in this thread would point to that. This is as much satire as saying "Fuck ISIS" or "Screw those that don't donate to charity" is.
You either don't know what satire is or you're just lying. Either way it's not really looking good for you.
Just in case displaying this. Satire is: "the use of humour, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues."
You criticize vices.. That's it. No humour (unless you think a heart emoticon is the same as the use of humour), no irony (because you have almost all games played), exaggeration (unless saying basic things is exaggeration) and there's no ridicule because that'd be against the rules...
So.. what the hell are you talking about?
You can't just say that the person (probably are talking of me... again, very vague so you can deny or comply with everything) doesn't realize something you haven't displayed. Did you notice that my neighbor has cancer? You should've because it's so obvious. Let me just imply that you'd be silly not to notice...
If you can't be bothered to discuss something then say so. Don't pretend you have a headache (a simple thing to say since no one can disprove it) and then just call this "satire"... Just ignore everyone then. From what I've seen you post, you've never come off as a person that wouldn't know this basic terminology. You're wasting everyone's time with this. People actually want to discuss these things.
But really, usually I give people an out. Just like I did with this comment before this moment. But now, I won't. This wasn't satire. You know it wasn't. You got people giving you reasons why you might be wrong, you argued back and you couldn't reason anymore. Whether it's laziness or just inability to do so is irrelevant. So, instead of either fessing up or just ignoring it like an adult, you decided to lie. Lie about how it's a satire and insinuate that those who didn't get it are idiots. This doesn't work with people over the age of 5.
You'll probably pretend to laugh and then exit the conversation, pretending that I'm overanalyzing this (even though I did basic deductions) or maybe you'll actually go overboard and close this thread and try and bury it.
In either case, publicly, you'll ignore this. But you know what tactic you used and why.
Comment has been collapsed.
"Maybe I'm a bit old school", I'm not old enough to be old school, for starters... Oh and my headache is real, from over 8 hours now. :3 I'm claiming it on 10 different forums atm.
The way I have written the whole thread is ironic. IF I wanted to argue truly I'd said something like
"Why are people still collecting games they don't need, which enforces the greed in small devs that makes garbage games just for the trading cards. Can't people realize that this is affecting the business and quality in games. Big devs are starting to not care that much ,as people would buy their games just for the cards" ect ect ect.
There's literally nothing serious in my main comment. Sorry for confusing you.
p.s I don't close threads unless people start to beg me, as I did for my thread few months ago.
p.s2 I'm going to bed. It's 4 :34 am :3

Ok, so these following comments (which relates to and implies consequences listed in your "argue truly" mode) were just you being ironic for the LOLs?
More number collectors = More trash 1 mission long games
Sorry to say it, but it's true :p
Coins, stamps, toys aren't getting 1 mission long indie games who's only goal is to end up as a number and 5 free cards to do that one badge. This hurts the gaming community in a way.

I MEAN I do 100% games I love. The rest can go rot! And that's my point. Devs make dumb cheap games with easy achievements cause of collectors! Cause they are going to make money of them anyway, for what ever reason T_T
Son... games that need you to be afk for 2 hours to get 5 cards and 5 out of 5 achievements, don't deserve support the first place. They are bad games made for 10 hours and posted to leech some money. They release them on 1.99$ and thousands of people buy them cause cheap and steam cards... Seriously. Please... Comment has been collapsed.
Look, fair enough, whatever. Saying that maybe you're old school isn't satire though. It's passive-aggressiveness. Those two things might look similar, but they are very much different.
The headache, as I said before, is something that can't be disproven. Same goes with proving it. What I said is just that anyone can claim a headache. Anyone can claim almost any physical illness that has no lasting effects. Things like headaches, flus, aches and so on. If you have it or don't is a different subject. If you do have it, I hope you're relieved of it soon enough.
The thing is that this is text. For one, you should accommodate for that. You don't have to, but then people will misunderstand it and the way that people understand it is the way you wrote it. So, if enough people see it as a serious thread (and people seem to generally see it as that, since joke answers are on serious threads too), then this thread is pretty serious. You might've wanted it to not be one, but this is what you created. This would never have qualified as satire in any other medium either though. Even if you'd said it out loud then it would've been lacking any of the three qualifications needed to make a satire. You could've tried to force it into a sarcastic tone, but that would've just made it a bad example of sarcasm because just your tone of voice doesn't make it into good sarcasm. So, no matter which way you look at it, it stays as sarcasm.
Have a good night's rest :D

I disagree with you.. Coins, stamps, toys, comic books are totally different from Steam games. Those physical objects are regarded valuables, require huge dedication for collection purposes, keeping them in mint conditions and a lot of money depending the items collected.
Whereas steam games, probably 80-90% of the collections are shit. A collection with the shittest titles.. is that the way to go? For me that basically is anti purpose of the collection hobby.
And even though you boast about the numbers of game. You'll never have it. You don't own any of the games. You are getting a service aspect of the game NOT the game itself. Valve doesn't sell games, they sell service. If ever in anyway Valve gets closed down, they are not obligated to provide you the game you had in the library. Different policy in EU, not sure
Coins, stamps, toys are transferable your games are not, transferring Steam accounts are against Valve's policy. Good luck with the boasts that you can't share with your loved ones, family or friends.
Coins, stamps, toys are marketable, Steam account is not. Well legally.
And the main thing I hate most is level of knowledge/ideas of collectors about the item in their collection in these two different areas.
Most Coins, stamps, toys, comic books collectors at least can tell about their items in the collection, but I don't see or expect that happening with Steam game collectors.
What I hope to change is, please don't boast about the numbers but boast about the concepts, ideas and variety about the game you have. At-least be useful for others. Numbers are just meaningless if you know nothing.
Comment has been collapsed.
Sure, but that was not what I was referring to. In the OP, kapy says "Games are meant to be played, not to be collected and gather dust...", and I was pointing out how that is what happens with most collections, whatever they may be consisting of. In no way was I comparing Steam licenses to actual objects.
Comment has been collapsed.
You could say the same about almost anything that is collected. Coins are meant to be spent...
Well I wanted to point out the differences :P
The example you pointed out didn't quite fit the game collection thing. There is purpose for everything I know, but the thing is Steam game collection can't even be compared with the secondary purpose of those physical things. I wanted to just show how mundane Steam collection is.
Comment has been collapsed.
As an object, coins and game licenses are not comparable. As a collectible, they are. Both are not being used for there original purpose, but for the satisfaction of the collector. Sure, coins can be collected for profit, but what about a collection of pebbles? My sister even collected different varieties of washers and bolts when she was a kid. Absolutely no value, and she also had no idea where they came from, but it was her collection all the same.
Comment has been collapsed.
As a collectible, they both are.
Yes I agree.
but what about a collection of pebbles? My sister even collected different varieties of washers and bolts when she was a kid.
That's nice.. I also used to different items
But I am not taking about casual collecting. I have almost 150-200 coins of different countries. We all have we all did, when we were kids. But I don't regard myself as a coin collector. Collecting while we were a kid is different thing, unless you have continued in more organized and conscious manner.
Absolutely no value, and she also had no idea where they came from, but it was her collection all the same.

Value always doesn't mean the monetary one.
Exactly what I have been trying to get at. It doesn't matter if the games are crap, and worth nothing monetarily. All that matters is that the collector enjoys stocking up on games, or just the fact that they own them in there extensive library. Who cares if they don't play them? Who cares what they do with them?
Value is in the eye of the beholder, and that's my biggest problem with this whole thread. It's insinuating that a collector's game collection is "worthless" or "invalid" because someone else has a different perception of the game's value. Other people have no business judging a collector's items, because a lot of the time, they won't understand what those items means that collector.

Why? I bought them. I might play them in the future. When I settle down I might take an interest in chess and decide to non-stop play that chess game I got in a bundle 30 years ago and forgot about. I understand what you're saying but many things go unused and left to dust; supermarkets and fast food throw away food that could go to the homeless for example

Yea, probably X_X . Even if I play a new game every single day it'll take me over a year to try them all atp. Got really into buying bundles about 2 years ago, but slowed way down in the past half year or so (as can be seen by my giveaway history), so maybe one day I'll manage to catch up.
At least I don't idle games like a lot of people seem to around here, and have played most of my SG wins.

From your played games it's apparent that you love completing games to 100%, collecting all achievements. They're also just a +1 thingy and mean nothing. Moreover, devs make games like Zup for people who just to farm achievements. Some would say collecting achievements is stupid and pointless (I like them tho).
See any similarities?

U would not know what would happen if everyone has the same mindset as u, imagine the game sold 100k copies and only 10k copies are played. What u have said would make the profit of the company reduced by 90%. This is almost the same for the game industry as we splurge our spending on games that we do not play. This does not include those "bad game" that you said as most of the big company that has good games would also may not have the earning they wanted from the selling game. For example, game such as clive parker games were having good reviews but due to not selling enough copies of game for profit, the company has to close down. Many other companies also face the same situation and you must be kidding that people shld only buy games that they would play, in which most people would also does not have the time to play it due to their working life and other matters.
Comment has been collapsed.
Run the statistics for Fallout 4 and remind me again how many people played the game? From what I see everyone who bough it played it with maybe minor exceptions. So your statement is false.
If you don't make real games, but just achievement/card farming, then you don't actually earn the money you made at the end...
People who currently have not time, mean they'll play In the future so your argument Is invalid, I pointed out that I mean the ones who don't give a fuck about the game and just buy it for the lulz and will never touch it.
Comment has been collapsed.
Well, this is an exception, with 95% of people played the game before(including those that just start up the game to farm cards). The amount of people with 0 achievement were actually 30% of the players. If you were the conclude that, only a mere amount of players actually played the game. Roughtly 65% and you think that the difference in the profit is minimal or great? This is one of the game that has most player played like pubg as well. Other exception of games you can see greater difference, even on AAA Games.
