Fortix really? You're the first person to mention that. I can't say any of us at Analog Reviews were blown away by Fortix...

Its was a joke :P its actually not a bad game though. worth 99 cents. Also what about the wii!

Ah fair enough :P. Meh the Wii is last-gen imo, I know it came out around the same time as the PS3/360 but the fact it isn't HD is annoying, it always looked terrible on my TV. I know it has some great games though, I've really been meaning to try out Xenoblade Chronicles. Unfortunately Nintendo's youtube policy is extremely strict and we wanted to avoid copyright violations.

I thought Nintendo's youtube policy was just that you couldn't monetize the videos. Is that the violation you're worried about happening? Shouldn't let the fact that you can't make money off a few nintendo videos stop you from covering an entire console. Granted, I may be completely wrong here.

I've heard it's more than just a lack of monetization, we're part of a network and they advised us against showing footage from Nintendo games. I wouldn't want to get a copyright strike or have any of our videos removed from Youtube as a result. Also, not being able to monetize a video is a little annoying as well, not that we make much money from it (I've spent about 20 times that of what we've brought in on advertising and various giveaways :P.) It would still be a slap in the face to give 100% of the profits for a video like this to Nintendo, especially when about 50 hours of editing work went into it and it's more or less free advertising for developers.

You forgot to cover HyperScan games. It's hard to imagine outgoing generation without its such prominent representative.

I think it's a little pretentious to say, "We provide unbiased, objective and thorough video game reviews." No reviewer can be totally unbiased or objective.

I'm not trying to bash you or anything, I just think you should consider changing that line.

Well, that's what we strive towards, and I'd say we're more objective than most. I personally don't really care who makes a game or what platform it's on. To give you an example, I bought both the PS4 and Xbox One day one for the sole purpose of reviewing launch titles. I think we actually say "We strive to provide unbiased, objective, and thorough video game reviews" on youtube directly. I guess I just left out the word "strive" in some of the giveaways.

Ah, okay. I haven't actually checked out the video yet, only saw it on one of the giveaways. Sorry for kind of being a little obtuse on that point, but I felt it needed to be said.

I'll definitely check out your video when I get on a better internet connection later this week!

Hey, no worries, no harm done. Sounds good, definitely let me know what you think, we're open to criticism but we do try to be objective on games.

My personal top 10:

10: Modern Warfare 2 (Yes, really)

9: Rock Band 2 (Again, really)

8: Left 4 Dead

7: Fallout: New Vegas

6: Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

5: Bastion

4: Uncharted 2

3: Red Dead Redemption

2: Mass Effect 2

1: Deus Ex: Human Revolution

Honourable mentions include Dark Souls, The Witcher 2, Bioshock, StarCraft 2, The Last of Us, and Batman: Arkham City.

Not a bad list at all, we have quite a few games in common (although they're in a different order.)

Bastion was great, so was Metal Gear Solid Peace Walker (Wasn't a fan of MGS4 but MGS1 and MGS3 are among my favorites from earlier generations.)

I wasn't that big into Left 4 Dead though, it was fun to play with friends but I didn't find it to be exceptional in any way. Modern Warfare 2 had a solid campaign but I was never really a fan of Call of Duty multiplayer.

Oh, Peace Walker. That game was amazing.

Some of my favorites from that list are Borderlands 2, Deus Ex: HR, Darksiders 2 and Rayman Legends. I would add Portal 2, Okami and Super Mario Galaxy 2 to mine though.

Ah that's cool. Portal 2 was decent but I didn't think it was that much of a step-up from the first Portal game. We would have added The Orange Box to our list but we decided not to count that as one game. Okami was last-gen since it was released for the PS2, but that was a great game.

Well, I played it on Wii and it did come out in 2006, so that's where I got it from. And yeah, I understand when people say the original Portal was nicely condensed, but I personally got alot more out of the co-op and creation tools.

I'll agree that Portal 2 is probably better than Portal 1. I just found Portal 1 a lot more revolutionary and innovate at the time. Portal 2 didn't seem like that much of an improvement over the first, the co-op was a bit too easy and short to really add to the experience.

We felt Bad Company 2 had better multiplayer than Battlefield 3. It had better maps with more destructible environments, a great Vietnam expansion and was a lot more innovative when it first came out.

There isn't a single Battlefield game with a decent singleplayer. Bad Company 2 probably comes the closest though to having an enjoyable campaign.

"...of this generation?" Generation of what? Gaming consoles? That's the only "generation" I can think of that spans a paltry seven years.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, that's generally how most people divide games, it's based on the console generations. This list spans 2006-2013 but we included quite a few PC titles as well. Last generation would have been from 2000-2005 for example and would include games like Half Life 2, Metal Gear Solid 3, Resident Evil 4, etc.

I realize there aren't really clear generations for the PC as new video cards and other components are released every 6 months or so. For the purpose of the video, we're going with console generations.

Most of these games really deserve it :) though I haven't played all of them, but it's good to see that Witcher 2 made it in the list, it's an amazing game :D

Yeah, The Witcher 2 was great and often overlooked. It's the same thing with Dark Souls, a lot of other reviewers praise Skyrim when both of the aforementioned games were released the same year and are better in my opinion.

It's pronounced Smough. Like snow with an m. Also, Mass Effect 2 as top pick? I mean, the franchise is fine and all, but top?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, there were five of us who voted and worked on the video. My friend Josh did the voiceover while I did all of the editing. I've told him a few times that it's pronounced "Smow and Ornstein" opposed to "Smog and Ornsteeeen" but he still butchered the pronunciation regardless. Mass Effect 2 was fairly unanimous for our top pick, it was our favorite installment from the trilogy with the best side quests, DLC, and story. I personally wanted to rate Dark Souls higher than RDR though.

best... DLC

An interesting statement. Citadel is beyond all shadow of doubt the best DLC ever created. I can understand most people cannot fathom that the death of a protagonist doesn't make a story bad, but that shouldn't cloud your judgement about other aspects.

Lair of the Shadow Broker was my favorite DLC personally. Citadel and Leviathan don't hold a candle to it.

Major Spoilers for Mass Effect/Red Dead Redemption:

(spoiler)
That isn't why we dislike Mass Effect 3, if we had something against having the protagonist die, Red Dead Redemption wouldn't be number 2 on our list. The main problems with Mass Effect 3 were the fact that your choices leading up to that point don't seem to matter at all. You were faced with different color beams. The starchild controlling the reapers was poorly written, as were the reaper's motivations to begin with. The Illusive Man had so much build up only for it to be entirely anti-climatic. Mass Effect 3 didn't really have as many sidequests as ME2 and it felt more linear in general. It wasn't a bad game, and I actually enjoyed the multiplayer. It just wasn't as good as 1 or 2.

Here's my list

  1. Cod 4 multiplayer ( I didn't really enjoy the other cod games but this one is really amazing and it's so darn addicting

  2. Mafia II ( the story and gameplay is amazing; and the cliffhanger at the end of the game makes me want them to make mafia 3 so darn bad!

  3. Mirrors edge

Yeah, can't say we were blown away by any of those games really. Mirror's Edge was pretty cool. I'm personally not that big on competitive FPS games these days. I prefer the more retro FPS titles like Unreal Tournament, Quake III, etc.

Yup; I don't really enjoy retro games; considering I unfortunately didn't get the experience to live through the retro games era. Considering the society around me, and that I didn't live the in the retro games era; makes me like modern games better.

  4. Battlefield 3 ( Best Multiplayer ever! )
  5. Minecraft ( <3! )

Walking Dead was a great game, it didn't quite make our list because your decisions didn't really seem to matter despite what Telltale promised. It's definitely a great game though and an enjoyable experience, we just wished we had more control over the story. We preferred New Vegas to 3 although they were both good games. I personally preferred the story and I really liked the factions such as Mr. House, Caesar, etc. The other guys preferred the multiplayer in Bad Company 2 to 3 but Battlefield was the only competitive FPS to make our list. Stalker Shadow of Chernobyl probably would have been #36 on our list and yeah, Minecraft is amazing :P.

Didn't include games for Wii, DS, or PSP in the running? Seems like a major oversight.

Well, I already sort of covered the reasons why we didn't include Nintendo games in a different comment here. In terms of the handheld consoles, I really liked Fire Emblem Awakening for the 3DS as well as Dissidia Duo Decim and Crisis Core for the PSP. I'm not sure if any of those should be in the Top 35 though, maybe if we expanded the list to a Top 50.

My absolute favorite games for the PSP are Tactics Ogre Let us Cling Together and Final Fantasy Tactics War of The Lions. We couldn't include either of those since they're remakes of PS1 games. Both of those would definitely make it onto our list for the PS1/N64 generation though.

Witcher 2, Last of us, Bioshock, Bioshock infinite, Batman arkham (asylum, city), Walking dead, (Dark,Deamons) souls,Deaus ex human revolution, Borderlands 2, GTA 5 and most important Portal (1,2), Bastion, The Stanley parable, Legend of Zelda (twilight princess, skyward sword), Assassin's creed 2, Rayman (origins, legends), Don't starve, Machinarium, World of goo, Heavy rain, Dota 2, Team Fortress 2 and most important Portal (1,2)

I agree with a lot of those, I really wanted to put Arkham Asylum on the list but the other guys outvoted me. We preferred the pacing of that to City though. Portal 1 maybe, Portal 2 meh. It wasn't a big improvement over the first game, and didn't really have the same level of impact.

Don't Starve was pretty cool but not top of the gen for me. I am kind of burned out on Zelda, they are still enjoyable games but the formula is wearing thin for me and I feel like each new 3d zelda game is trying to capture the magic of Ocarina of Time. World of Goo is a great time waster...
