Accidentally purchased the $15 tier even though I own Tales of Zestiria already (among other things). D'oh... CV boosting time, I guess :|...
Also, it bothers me that it's so much easier to climb the CV ladder in certain parts of the world... If you know what I mean.

If your store region is Russia, Brazil, India, or China, you can get unbundled games for around half as much as a ROW person (even if said ROW person lives in a country with a lower average wage). Since region-restricted giveaways give the same CV as ROW ones, you can see people on the highest levels with 95%+ region-specific (plus often group-locked) CV.

Aww, I'd include multiple regions, if only I could exclude a few. It's mostly people who can buy a ton of cheap games to level up really fast that are bothersome :|...

But since their salaries are lower, they're still spending a similar significant amount of their income on buying gifts to strangers. Isn't this something to applaud rather than be annoyed with?

Comment has been collapsed.

Certainly, it's admirable, but that still doesn't remedy the fact that they can win all the gifts they want from me, but I can't win a single one from them :'D.

But do you want to win from them in the first place? If you are treating sg like rng trading, you might be doing it wrong.

I would prefer if the feedback loop was complete, yes. And a bit of rng trading never hurt anyone! Unless you're a chronic gambler or something :|.

You can very easily do that with SGTools-protected giveaways. Just keep in mind that if some of their gifts are not region-locked, then they may actually be trying to overcome something that Steam imposes on them.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I fail to see why is it that you care whether I do it through Steamgifts or SGTools. I am simply trying to make low-entry giveaways so those who are eligible for them are more likely to win. Everyone knows I don't make giveaways that don't present some sort of near-impossible challenge :P. SGTools would be too easy.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't care. I was only proposing a solution to solve this issue: "they can win all the gifts they want from me, but I can't win a single one from them".

You can't do it with SG alone. You can do it with SGToos. If you want to make sure that people who enter your giveaways make at least some giveaways that you can enter and you still want your giveaway to be accessible to all regions, you can use this custom rule:

real_sent_group/real_sent_cv < 0.5 AND AND real_sent_region_free/real_sent_cv > 0.3

This one would ensure that they don't have more the 50% group GAs and no more than 30% region-locked GAs. You can of course change those number to whatever suits your fancy.

If SGTools is "too easy", then I'm afraid you'll have to accept that this issue above can't be solved.

She did exactly that without SGTools.

I feel I've adequately solved the issue by selecting a region for the moment. I have never used SGTools and don't really feel inclined to do so, but thank you for your suggestion. I normally don't make giveaways that are in plain sight like this, anyway. I was just feeling a tad lazy, today.

This is why I like to interject and point out that I earn less money than a Russian in the same position (and now only a few percent more than a Chinese in the same position, although still more than twice as much as an Indian in the same position), but I pay in EU1 region prices with an additional 27% VAT…

I learnt to play the CV system and look for deals for the absolute lowest money possible for me. I did many Humble tier 1 packs, IndieGala 9-packs, OtakuMaker 10-packs, DailyIndieGame 2-packs, now using their store to get a key for 10-15 cents… I acquired thousands of keys with barely 50 dollar investments a month. I mostly still live on that stock as now I now just buy games for myself (with level 10 reached, there is no real goal left on the site apart from spreading the HOG love).

Oh.. my poor wallet envies your ingenuity... I probably drop $200/month on games, haha... I spend too much time suffering with and causing suffering upon my puzzle solving brethren :'D. I mainly purchase Humble Bundle or Bundlestars. IndieGala has had too much shovelware trash for me to want to buy lately...

$50 a month is still a significant amount of money to spend on gifting, even in countries where the salaries are higher. But since it seems you enjoyed this journey I think it was well worth it.

It's media products in general and I believe it started with the film industry defining international regions and staggering release dates so that they could physically ship canisters of film that were no longer needed after the initial rush on release in Region 1 (USA). It's just super obvious when you're buying a digital product from an American store (run by Australians! According to their employee handbook, more than 50% Valve staff were born in Australia!) and have to pay in US dollars, just more of them than the other people that pay in US dollars. At least New Zealanders get to pay in their own currency and avoid currency conversion fees on top of the region "tax".

It still beats living in Syria.

Well, it's not fair when people in certain regions can win your giveaways, but you cannot win any of theirs. Where's the reciprocity in that?

There may exist some exact explanation, maybe dealing with price differences and why region restrictions were put into place, but I'm not too well knowledgeable with that topic I'm afraid. I'm certain some better system could be put into place to avoid region locks, but yet again I've got no exact answer.

Steam games purchased from certain regions are locked to those regions so that Valve can maximize profits. It's not something we can remedy through SG, I'm afraid. So, we must do what we have to do for the time being...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, but you'd think Valve would let people buy a specific "region neutral" gift copy when checking out (not sure if this already exists or not). Maybe has the general price in USD like steam used to have and would allow for non-region locked games to be given from some people. Doesn't fix all of the problem but it could help.

Thanks for Enslaved: OttW, looks like an awesome game

Well, it is Namco Bandai.

edit: Bamco.. Bandai Namco.. I actually forget which order it is in.

The Naruto game had this message:
This key is only available in the following countries: DM, BB, HT, JM, HN, BR, BS, BZ, PR, NI, LC, TT, PY, VG, PA, PE, GU, GT, CO, VE, CL, CA, EC, GF, AR, CR, UY, SV, US, GD, MX. If the person you're gifting this to doesn't live in one of them, Steam might prevent the key from being redeemed. Would you like to continue?
