I do use the reviews as a general guideline, and tend to steer clear of most games with a negative review.

I actually pay much attention on the steam reviews, as opposed to Metascore (shown on the steam page) for example since it reflects better the opinion of paying (and playing) users then just some Scores from different gaming websites (where I don't even know half of them - and don't know if they could have been bought to get the score up)
I found he steam reviews being a pretty good indicator of the quality of the product (and some reviews are even better then from some gaming sites - but thats just my opinion)

Yes, User reviews influence whether or not I decide to purchase a game. Some are also funny. :)

Most of the time I just look if it has only positive feedback. When it has mixed I also read reviews to understand why and what the flaws of the game are.
