Hello everybody, I am looking for suggestions for 3D games with good rating (rating 7.5 and above, e.g. Gamespot, IGN, Steam etc) which I can play on my old laptop with the following specs:

  • i7 2670QM 2.2 GHz
  • GT555m 2GB DDR3
  • 8GB Crucial DDR3 1333MHz (4GB + 4GB)

I prefer RPG, strategy, action and adventure games with a good story or which can be played for hours on end. I would really appreciate the comments below, thanks in advance!

Edit: I see a lot of nice game suggestions in the comments which I would like to try! On the other hand, I would like to know if anyone has some more suggestions for RTS games?

Things like Skyrim and Fallout 3/New Vegas might run decently on this

I suggest Deus Ex: Human Revolution, good gameplay and epic story, you can buy it for about 3€/$ when on sale. My first playthrough took me about 40 hours and I enjoyed every single second of it.

In my case at least it was practically impossible to get it to work, on a laptop that has integrated graphics as well as a gaming gpu.

I am abroad now and I have my gaming system at home (GTX980 + i7 4770k etc) and played this game for the 3rd time on my system at home. It's a great game indeed! I also played it on this laptop a long time ago. Worked well enough on this system!

Why are ratings from such websites important to you? Those ratings are mostly crap and lies since publishers pay those to give good ratings.

Try and search on Steam for some good games. You could easily play some great games from the old times; back when gaming wasn't as bad as it is now. I.e. Duke Nukem 3D, DOOM, Quake, P.O.D., Need for Speed 2+3, Road Rash, you name it.

I agree to a certain extent that those reviews should not always be leading in choosing or buying a game, but I prefer to look at them because most of the time IMO they were right and I really enjoyed those games they reviewed.

Fallout 3
Borderlands 2
Fallout: New Vegas
Deus Ex: Invisible War
Fable: Lost Chapters

To name a few, just the Fallout games should give you around 900 hours of playtime after modding additional content.
PS: Don't use the ratings from IGN/Gamespot etc. They aren't relevant anymore, people exploit the voting systems all the time for their own benefit.

If you set reasonable video quality settings and change resolution to 720p, also Tomb Raider (2013) should works absolutely fine on your laptop.

I like this suggestion, that is initially why I created this discussion, just to see if I overlooked some games. I will also take a look at the earlier Tomb Raider games. I played the first Tomb Raider as a kid and still love it today!

I recommend TR Anniversary, or Legend if you're looking at the slightly older ones.

Yup, TR Anniversary is a really, really good stuff (and it even has a propper controller support). Legend and Underworld are pretty enjoyable as well.
Moreover, there is a huge discount on TR games on Steam at the moment!

Good suggestions. Also Underworld I found very good.

Some RTS Recommendations:
Age Of Empires 3
Men of war assault squad 2
Company of heroes
Dawn of war 2

MoW:AS 2 is surprisingly demanding. It will probably work on that computer, but it's a risky recommendation. The other games should work just fine.

It worked on my 740m which is not that great, like medium settings 40 fps without problems most of the time
So it could work
anyway its not that big size in when it comes to download so if it didn't work he can refund (it was so cheap on steam recently on sales)

I must say that your "old" laptop is pretty good!

Some games that I played in my old laptop:

  • Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines
  • Dark Messiah of Might and Magic
  • The Wolf Among Us
  • One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3
  • Rocket League
  • Serious Sam 3
  • Bastion
  • Transistor
  • The Return of the Obra Dinn (By far the best game that I played last year, runs on a potato, but it's not for everyone)
  • Ziggurat
  • Grim Dawn

That's a pretty good laptop, can you please give me the model name?
You should be able to run Alan Wake and Batman Arkham games with no problems.

I have a little bit more powerful laptop (Intel i7, GT 650m + 2GB, 8GB RAM), and sadly, I always have noticable performance issues (drastic frame drops from 30-40 to about 10 fps) with Alan Wake (720p, medium settings).
As for Arkham games, at least the first one should works without problems.

Mine is with i3 2328m, GT 630m and 8GB RAM and I can't say I remember having big problems. But I run them on "Low", of course. Maybe I didn't pay attention, because I really liked those games.

I had framedrops issues even on lower settings. Especially when that bright lighting effects showed up during combat. Maybe there was something wrong with my settings in nVidia Control Panel.
Thankfully, Alan Wake works as a charm on my desktop and Xboxes.

The model name is BTO 15p35, you can also replace BTO with CLEVO, they are the same. I did buy Batman Arkham Origins not long ago, I totally forgot I had it xD. Thanks!

Fallout 3 and New Vegas runs smooth for sure on this spec of machine and has like an unlimited time to play if you don't just rush the quests.

For adventure games, I love the point and click puzzle games. Deponia and Edna and Harvey are really cool games. loads of fun and takes you time to figure out so it's not done in 2 hours. There are more good adventure games.
Also "The Cave" is a really cool platform like puzzle game.

Wut? "Old" laptop?

You got pretty alright machine. Just don't play big new AAA titles and/or poorly optimised games (easily findable from steam reviews), and you'll be fine. Also you could try something like https://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri

I recommend Resident Evil 4, it's a good game which can be played again and again without getting boring.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown for strategy. It runs great even on non-dedicated GPUs.

Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition for Action/RPG. It's older, but still just as fun as when it came out (and currently on sale for less than a buck!)

In doubt you can always check
Can You Run It

The diagnostic of the computer lasts a minute and then you can check games against your computer specs. It's usually pretty accurate and includes VRAM requirements which can be a deal breaker for some action games.
