I was reading through the threads on income - https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/E3kD0/sg-how-high-is-your-monthly-income and https://www.steamgifts.com/discussion/SMdRu/people-who-have-0-disposable-income-how-come. And it occurs to me that what I see most of is not money issues but mental issues. Sure there are people here who say, "I'm broke." But most of them go on to say a lot more about their own mental state.

Of the people who have no mental issues and are broke, I expect they fall into very simple and obvious categories: students who don't have a job, and teens/20s people (mostly young men) who live in very poor countries.

But what I mostly notice on SG is the kinds of behavior that go along with mental illness. I observe this on all of the gaming forums I hang out on that have a community with some sticking power. The combination of gaming and internet forums seem to attract people with mental illness. Probably how I ended up here myself.

Do you suffer from a mental illness? E.g. depression, PTSD, anxiety, bipolar, etc.

The internets can act as a safe-space for people with social anxiety, as it creates a level base everybody starts with.
Nicknames are´nt ill, fat, ugly or being hindered in their form of expression whatsoever. It´s kinda the same principle that protects trolls, a nickname will never haphazardly punch you in the face.

For instance, I dunno why, but I always feel itchy with people of my age (or younger) around. It´s as if i can feel some sort of alpha-conflict all the time, and it makes me fucking nervous! That ain´t the case around elderly persons, where theres a feeling of mutual acceptance instead.

Some way along the line i got it all wrong.
But on the internets i don´t know your age, hence talking to you does´nt make me nervous :p

I'm not diagnosed with anything, and I don't think I suffer from any mental illness.

I get extremely anxious easily and have a very hard time dealing with many things involving human interaction without getting stressed out, but in all honestly I really doubt that's a mental illness. I'm just not fit for socializing and stuff, and I'm a nervous/anxious person in nature. :P

schizoaffective disorder, depressive type. it sucks, but it could suck a lot more and gets a bit easier now (10 years after the very stressful diagnosis circus of psychiatrists, brain scans and neurological exams). i like the internet because people don't see i'm a weirdo as easily.

also, I like HOGs and Truck sims.

Got recently diagnosed (in May, if I remember correctly) with depression. Have been on meds ever since, and already changed it once. I'm also taking meds to sleep, because every night I can't maintain it. Thankfully, here in Brazil, we kind of have a program that helps with expensive meds (you only pay a percentage of it), otherwise I doubt I would've been able to pay.

And I'm not going to a therapist because it's pretty expensive here, and the ones that are free (aka Psychology major students that have a compulsory internship of 6 months) I'm not willing to go because I'm a very closed person, and it takes way past those 6 months to fully open up to someone. So I'm only taking meds and hoping that it'll solve everything.

Been struggling with a bunch of disorders since my late teens, aka over a decade now. Diagnosed with a whole rainbow of them, namely G.A.D., Major Depressive disorder with psychotic features, conditional social anxiety, recurring hypomanic episodes and some cognitive issues relating to short term memory. Spent a few years on therapy accompanied by two years of trying a wide array of prescribed SSRIs, antipsychotics and anti-anxiety medications with little to no effect before I gave up on them a couple years back.

Thanks for starting this discussion so we can all share. I'm diagnosed and had issues since childhood. I've also worked in the mental health/ human service field for a long time. Currently a full-time student with 2 full-time jobs.

I find the idea that you can have mental disorders but not suffer from them inspiring. Thanks for posting.
