Hi everybody,

maybe the awesome people of steamgifts can help me

I bought the russian version of "Aliens: Colonial Marines". No problem to redeem it to my account but when I want to start the preload I get the message "Region restricted". I live in germany btw...

Is it possible that the preload in russia hasnt started yet and thats why I cant preload it? Or is that I have to wait until the release date to download it? Or is it region restricted in the end even I could redeem it? Sth else, anybody has a clue?

Would be nice to get a little help. I will try to get some informations before I contact the steamsupport.

and NO: I won't use any VPN or other illegal shit!

Thank you :)

You preloaded the 5.5 gb file? Or just the placeholder 20kb?

Oh wait, yeah, it's the placeholder. :|

Bronasium does not tag it as region-restricted :| What's going on? Maybe the preload is locked, but the release will work fine?

View your account data. You should see a list of all subscriptions you have activated with gifts or keys, and when. What's the name of it there

Wierd situation.. for someone it works, for some people dosn't.. I think that this depends of country.

Since there's no region restrictions listed in the CDR, it probably isn't preloading because you live in Europe. I'd say give it a couple days and see if Steam makes an announcement about preloading for Europe.

This is my guess too, can we get a confirmation from someone who lives in EU and is currently preloading the game? (Doesn't have to be a RU version)

Simple. Wait till it come out, try to install it, if its still says region locked - Contact Steam Support and tell them that it was present for your birthday and you activated it. You didn't knew that will be region locked and MAYBE they will TRY to DO something :D

It's not region restricted for play, but RU stores claim that you need a VPN to activate -- and no, it's not illegal either.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Using a VPN to activate a game is forbidden by Steam as stated in the SSA (Steam Subscriber Agreement).

They would most likely ban your account.

Show me a SINGLE shred of proof of ANYONE being suspended/banned for VPN activating a game. Don't talk hypothetically with me, I have the real world experience advantage, you have your fear and doubt.

Anyway, I'm done here, I'm not wasting any more time on this and neither am I risking getting banned because people goad me into discussion ;)

You started this up, so you don't get to just back out ^^ Sounds like you're showing signs of "fear and doubt".

Now, lets get into the juicy stuff. I don't need to show you anyone at all. If it's against the rules, it's against the rules. Like I said below, if you can get away with something, that doesn't suddenly make it ok to do. One day, if you ever develop a conscience, you might understand that. I hope you do :)

Actually, no, I didn't start this - Toaster did when he tried to cheat the system in order to get cheaper games. Funny how that makes ME the bad guy when I tried to help him actually use his ill-gotten gains. All I've done is tried to help, instead getting nothing but abuse for my troubles. I've done absolutely nothing wrong to any of you, yet I'm being treated like I just took a liquid shit on your grandmother's corpses. This whole community is cancer and I'm done with it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

So if Toaster's Russian friend decides to send him a gift for his birthday, that's cheating the system? You were the one who stated it was legal to use a VPN despite the SSA stating otherwise! Now that sounds like cancer! :D

Know the facts before saying anything online. People will judge you very quickly. Toaster has given a lot to this community, in more ways than one. If he was new to the site, the fact that he won't use a VPN already tells me what sort of person he is.

Some games tagged as RU works fine after activation, but there still some games have regional lock. Maybe EU and NA version allow players to preload this game. So you could just be patient. After the official release, and see if the regional lock is still there. I purchased this physical copy of this game and still haven't got it yet. But before I bought it, I have searched a lot of key stores. I saw at least 2 online key stores selling RU keys of this game. They all say this game just need VPN to activate it but after you activate it, it is region free.
So I think the region lock is only for preload. But I don't have solid information or official announcement of it. So just hope it works after release.

I had once Source MP pack from ru store and it didn't work outside of CIS, so I had to re-create my acc. Also, it's forbidden to activate/buy games with IP changers, I had even a support answer on this, when I mentioned that I've used a proxy just to verify the prices of different regions (I didn't know about ?cc= stuff at that time), so I'd not risk to use it and of course I'd not buy ANYTHING, that even possible can be region-restricted, it's just doesn't worth it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Just to clarify, I've activated a key being still in CIS and when I got to France, I just couldn't play it, saying me they are region-locked.

i'm in the same boat as you mate, i hope i don't have to buy it again because of this region block.

**edit

Bad news, it's even saying at the gift description that the game is only available in the CIS countries.

Yeah, as I said earlier; you need to be in CIS territories to ACTIVATE. Just use a VPN for activation and then you're set as gameplay doesn't require CIS IP.

Your loss then. I've been using VPN to activate games for ages and never had a single issue. Don't EVER use a VPN for purchasing games, Valve really don't like that and they'll ban your arse, but activating? No problem, done it for a dozen titles. If you want to pay €40 for the game, be my guest, I'd rather pay $15 :P

Everybody I know does. The reason why people like Toaster don't is simple; fear and doubt. I've VPN activated a dozen games, no problem, hundreds of people on a forum I visit use RU retail/key stores to get games all the time.

It's no skin off my nose if you want to fight me over this, just don't do it. Go on, shoo, run back to Steam EU and pay €50 instead.

It's easy for you to sit there and point the judgemental finger, you pay a pittance for your games compared to EU tier1/tier2 regions. Try paying our prices and see how smug you feel with your 1000+ games, if you could even afford that in your lifetime. I used to pay in GBP back in the UK, but since moving to Norway I've been forced into Tier2-EU -- and we don't even have the Euro as a currency. In the meantime, I will use - and continue to use - sites such as CDDisk and Nuuvem to get certain games at a price that is more manageable, rather than disgustingly unreasonable such as the €=$ prices in EU Steam store. I've bought a dozen RU titles and saved quite a bit of cash, I will continue to do so as long as I'm able.

Oh and don't sit there and equate people purchasing cheaper games as the same lowlife scum that cheat online and ruin gaming for everyone. That's a bullshit argument and it's downright offensive.

Woah man! €50 for a single game? I'll let you know when I pay anywhere near that price, oh wait a minute................I never have.

I believe Toaster's reasons for not using VPNs are the same as mine, it's illegal. Just because you can get away with a crime doesn't mean you should do it. Undermining the system that you enjoy using is quite low on your part. A community that you value is built on abiding the rules and respecting the authority. What you're doing doesn't help Steam at all. I'm surprised you're not a pirate.

But hey, some people can live with it, me and Toaster won't.

He already activated the game though and cdr doesn't show anything. But they can add restriction anyway there, like happened with Borderlands 2 preorder or XCOM preorder. Originally people were able to add it etc, but then they added allowonlyrun and yeah, it would not run. Although they reversed that after some outcry.

Was that message from the beginning? Maybe they added it recently just to warn people so they don't cry like it happened with BL2 and XCOM, but if you didn't see info about it originally then it's kinda their fault for misleading people.

VPN activation of games is against the SSA and will result in your account being suspended.

This is on top of all the other horrible problems like no languages being avalilable, patches breaking your game, etc.

No it won't. I've done it a dozen times already, as well as hundreds of people I converse with on a daily basis. Show me a SINGLE shred of proof of ANYONE being suspended/banned for VPN activating a game. Show me a single piece of substantiated proof.

It's funny how people have paid $30 for the Russian copy while they could get a region free key for the same price from getgamesgo.com, here's the email they sent me:

Pick up a huge pre-order discount on Aliens: Colonial Marines, the sci-fi blockbuster that’s like a day on a farm. Use the LV-426 voucher code in the basket when you check out to save a total of 39% off the RRP. You can also get 20% off the Season Pass. The voucher expires Thurs 7th Feb at 4 p.m. (GMT); Aliens: Colonial Marines is out 12th February.

Because € prices are much higher as US$ prices. E.g. the game costs 37.49$ (=28€) on GMG right now. Without the proxy it's 34.99€ (=46.85 US$). The cheapest russian key I could find is 19.85€ (=26.57 US$).
