Luca (2021)
American computer-animated coming-of-age fantasy film. It's good. Nothing completely new or special, but definitely good. Especially for younger children I think. At it's core it's about accepting people for who and what they are. And that's never a bad thing to teach children. The animation was good as well. Especially the hair of Giulia, one of the important characters, looked very realistic. Overall I'd recommend it. It's probably not gonna win the category it's nominated for at the Oscars, though.

Shang Chi. First time I was in the cinema in ages when I went. Was a 2nd date. I don't like superhero stuff. She liked superhero stuff. Doomed from the start. Thought the movie was dumb too. A hodgepodge of regurgitated ideas and "crouching tiger hidden dragon" visuals.

The Tragedy of Macbeth (2021)
American historical thriller film. Great cast (Denzel Washington, Frances McDormand, Brendan Gleeson, Harry Melling and more) delivering some really good performances. I have to admit that I haven't seen any other adaptation of Macbeth, neither on screen or stage. I've read it but it's been a while. So I can't really elaborate on how close this movie follows the story, but I thought it was very good. It's not something the casual moviegoer would watch (black and white Shakespeare adaptation) but to everyone else I can recommend this. Glad it got nominated for Best Production Design at the Oscars because those sets really are beautiful and very fitting for this movie. And so is the cinematography, the other technical award it got nominated for. And Denzel Washington definitely earned his Best Actor nomination for this. Overall I can recommend it, but again, not everyone's gonna enjoy a movie like this.

Antlers.
What a waste of an hour and a half that was. Probably going in the top 20 of my worst movies have seen list now.
Boring, drawn out and as dark, if not darker, then Alien VS Predator requiem, and I meant in lighting, or lack there of.
Do yourselves a favor and do NOT watch this.
2/10. And that's ONLY because I like Graham Green.

Faces - 1968
Not bad, can't say I was into it the whole time.

The Power of the Dog (2021)
Western psychological drama film. Rewatched this yesterday. After my first viewing I wasn't that convinced. I just didn't think it's a great movie. So now, after it got nominated for 12 Oscars I decided to watch it again. And yeah, some of those nominations it definitely deserves. But I still don't think it's one of the best movies of the year. I hope it doesn't win, but I feel like it's a favourite of most.

The Dress (2020)
Polish drama short film. Julka (Anna Dieduszycka) is working as a cleaning lady in a rundown motel in rural Poland. She doesn't talk much and when she does she only talks to her co-worker and friend Renata (Dorota Pomykala). She's lonely, the right person just never came along, especially because she's a person with dwarfism. She doesn't like her body, wishes to be "normal" like everyone else. But that's just it. Nobody's really normal. Then a truck driver named Bogdan (Szymon Piotr Warszawski) comes along and he seems to have a genuine interest in getting to know her better.
This was the first of the Oscar-nominated shorts I've watched this year, so I can't say anything about it's chances in comparison to the others, but at only 30 minutes it's definitely worth checking out. Can recommend!

Spencer (2021)
American-british-german-chilean historical fiction psychological drama film. First of all, and this might be a spoiler but I'm not gonna mark it as one because it might make people want to watch this movie more, this isn't just a biography of Princess Diana. It's alternative historical fiction. That said, the story is very good. Kristen Stewart's performance especially was really good but I can't comment on her chances since I haven't watched any other movie with a Best Actress nomination, as it turns out. Usually I've already watched at least some of the movies nominated in each category (minus the short film and the documentary ones), but weirdly not this time. So yeah, I can definitely recommend this movie. It's different than what you think, but very good nonetheless.

Being the Ricardos (2021)
American biographical drama film. Fascinating story about Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz and "I Love Lucy". I can definitely see why Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem were nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor respectively. Don't really think they have big chances at winning, though. The movie itself is definitely worth the watch, especially if you only know of Lucille Ball vaguely. Recommended. But don't just hear it from me. Lucy Arnaz, Lucille Ball's and Desi Arnaz' daughter has a youtube channel and uploaded a video on there about this movie and she says it's amazing and captures her parents perfectly. So take from that what you want, but yeah, it's worth the watch.

Flee (2021)
Danish animated docudrama film. The film follows Amin Nawabi, who, on the verge of marrying his husband, shares his story for the first time about his hidden past fleeing his home country of Afghanistan to Denmark as a refugee. Fascinating story. So engaging. The animation style definitely helps with that, too. Definitely deserves the three nominations it earned (Best International Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature and Best Animated Feature). It's a very intimate, personal story. Definitely a must-watch this year! Highly recommended!

Audible (2021)
American short documentary film. It follows Maryland School for the Deaf senior athlete Amaree McKenstry-Hall and his teammates' journey to defend their winning streak, while simultaneously coping with the tragic loss of a close friend to suicide. First of the Documentary Short category I've seen so I can't talk about its chances, but it's very good! On the other hand, it could've been a feature documentary, not just 39 minutes long.

Affairs of the Art (2021)
British animated comedy short film. Great animation style (2D hand drawn on paper). It's all about obsessions, told from the perspective of an older lady. She's obsessed with art for example. This short is pretty bizarre, but also definitely unique. It's only 16 minutes long, though. First nominee from the Animated Short category so I can't compare it to anything else yet, but overall I think I can recommend it.

Cyrano (2021)
British-american-canadian musical romantic drama film. It's surprisingly good. Didn't expect to be so invested. And the songs are also very good. Peter Dinklage can sing, didn't know that. But then again he played the same role on Broadway in 2018. Overall this movie surprised me because it might genuinely be one of the best movies of 2021. Peter Dinklage's performance was fantastic. And the movie was so entertaining, it didn't feel too long at all, even at over 2 hours. After watching this, I'm surprised that it only got nominated for Best Costume Design at the Oscars, which it probably won't win. It deserves a lot more, especially a Best Actor nomination for Dinklage. Definitely watch this! Highly recommended!

A Hologram for the King (2016)
American-german comedy-drama film. Rewatched this yesterday. Still very good for what it is. Last time I said it's an easy watch and yes, I still agree with that.

Metropolis (2001), anime.
Strange mixture of futurism, steampunk, with retro themes and music. The story is somewhat bland, but the ambience, environments and soundtrack make it for an enjoyable experience.
Yes, there are some winks to Fritz Lang's Metropolis, but the story doesn't have much to do with that one (despite certain background similarities).

The Lost Daugther (2021)
British-american-greek psychological drama film. Very slice-of-life. Both Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley definitely deserve their nominations for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively. Maggie Gyllenhall's directional debut. Can't really talk about what's happening in the movie because not much is really happening but it still has you on the edge of your seat. Recommended!

Here we go, I'll start.
Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10
