Here we go, I'll start.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark (2010) - This movie is a joke. At first it's interesting, then it's boring and then it's just funny/pathetic. And they put it in a "horror" genre. Words are not sufficient. Nosferatu is turning in his grave. 3/10

Justice League Crisis on Infinite Earths part one.

DAMN that was good. A little bit odd with the jumping around but it works in it's own way.

Alive in Joburg (2005)

South African science-fiction short film. It's about aliens living in a slum in Johannesburg, South Africa. In today's episode of "early short films by great directors" I've watched this one by Neill Blomkamp, who made a few commercials and one other short film before this but later make movies like District 9 (2009) (which is actually based on this short), Elysium (2013), Chappie (2015), Gran Turismo (2023) and some day hopefully the sequel to District 9 that everyone has been waiting for since District 9 made huge waves back in '09. This short film actually got Blomkamp the director role for that Halo movie that was supposed to be made around that time, which sadly never materialized. But now a bit about this short. If you've seen District 9 (2009) I'm sure you'll like this, too. It's even more documentary-like than the feature. (If you haven't seen District 9, you should.) Overall, even though it was way too short at just 6 minutes, I can recommend it.

Mystic River (2003)

American neo-noir crime drama film. It's about the tragic murder of a 19-year-old girl that reunites three childhood friends still living in Boston; the victim's gangster father, a detective, and the disturbed man they both suspect of killing her. Rewatched this yesterday and it's still great.

The Show (2017)

American satirical drama thriller film. It's about a reality TV show that has its contestants ending their lives for the public's enjoyment. It's very thought-provoking, definitely reminds me of Black Mirror. But it's definitely not for everyone and not a movie I'll probably ever rewatch, so overall I don't know if I can recommend it.

Need for Speed (2014)

American-Indian action crime film. It's about a street racer who sets off to race cross-country as a way of avenging his friend's death at the hands of a rival racer. Very good cast (Aaron Paul, Imogen Poots, Dominic Cooper, Rami Malek, Kid Cudi, Dakota Johnson, Michael Keaton and more). Sure, this is just an action movie with a very predictable plot and everything but it's entertaining and sometimes that's enough. So I can actually recommend it if you're in the mood for something like that.

Devil and the Deep (1932)

American romantic drama film. It's about a naval commander who has alienated his wife due to his insane jealousy over every man she speaks to and after his obsessive behavior drives her to the arms of a handsome lieutenant, tragic drama ensues. Great cast (Tallulah Bankhead, Gary Cooper, Charles Laughton, Cary Grant and more) delivering great performances. If you know anything about classic movies you'll know that those four were very famous and among the best in their business, so to see them together in this movie was definitely a sight to behold, even if they've all done better movies than this one. So overall I can recommend it.

Monkey Man (2024)
I became aware of this movie after I saw a video online of a theatre giving Dev Patel a standing ovation after the screening.
After watching the movie, am wondering whether that audience and I watched the same movie or were they being kissass?

This movie is not even mediocre, the plot is so generic, the acting is decent but the entire movie feels very pointless. After the first 30mins you can predict the entirety of this movie.

What We Did on Our Holiday (2014)

British black comedy-drama film. It's about a family of five visiting Granddad for his big 75th birthday party in rural Scotland, but the parents are separated and hope their three kids won't mention it. Great cast (David Tennant, Rosamund Pike, Billy Connolly, Ben Miller, Annette Crosbie and more) delivering very good performances in this very heartwarming movie. Overall I can definitely recommend it.

The Fall Guy (2024)

American action comedy film. Watched this at the cinema yesterday. It's about a stuntman working on his ex-girlfriend's directorial debut action film, only to find himself involved in a conspiracy surrounding the film's lead actor. Very good cast (Ryan Gosling, Emily Blunt, Hannah Waddingham, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke, Stephanie Hsu and more). This movie does feel like a love letter to stunts. It also broke the world record for most cannon rolls in a car, which previously was at 7 cannon rolls (famously performed during the filming of Casino Royale (2006), you know the scene) and now stands at 8.5 cannon rolls. The movie is kind of meta at some points, with a lot of the crew who are working on the movie in the movie actually being the crew that worked on the movie itself. Overall, despite not really being a big action movie fan, I can definitely recommend this. And please try and watch it on the biggest screen you can find.

Game 6 (2005)

American comedy drama film. It's about a fictional playwright, who has a new stage play opening on the same day of the sixth game of the 1986 World Series. Great cast (Michael Keaton, Robert Downey Jr., Bebe Neuwirth, Griffin Dunne, Catherine O'Hara and more) delivering very good performances. I don't care about baseball, so that aspect of the movie was pretty much lost on me. But I thought the rest was good, so I can recommend it.

Totally Killer (2023)

American slasher comedy film. It's about a teenager who travels back in time to 1987 to stop the serial killer who returned and murdered her mother in 2023. Very entertaining time travel slasher fun. The kills themselves could've been a bit more creative, but the way they showed how messing with time travel affected the present was nicely done. Overall I can recommend this one.

American neo noir mystery film. It's about an ex-con who was once a cop and is now working as security in a college who decides to investigate the murder of one of the students, a daughter of a senator. Great cast (Burt Lancaster, Harris Yulin, Ed Lauter and more) delivering very good performances. Overall I can recommend this one.

Planet of the Apes (2001)

American science fiction adventure film. It's about an astronaut who crash-lands on a mysterious planet where evolved, talking apes dominate a race of primitive humans. Very good cast (Mark Wahlberg, Helena Bonham Carter, Tim Roth, Michael Clarke Duncan, Paul Giamatti, Lisa Marie Smith, Kris Kristofferson, David Warner and more). I've only seen the original five movies but I'm gonna watch the newest one at the cinema on Wednesday, so I have to watch the other ones as well, and that includes this one. You know how in the 1968 original Charlton Heston's character famously exclaims "Get your stinkin' paws off me, you damn dirty ape!". Well, very conveniently, in this movie one of the apes on that planet says "Take your stinkin' hands off me, you damn dirty human!" pretty much as soon as we first get there. Which, surprisingly, doesn't feel like a refernce to the original, but like it's a cheap copy. Towards the end this movie also had probably one of the worst explosion VFX I've ever seen. So for those reasons and more I can't recommend it.

The first one is less good than the others but they managed to really make them both similar and separate from the original movies and novel in a really great way.
Enjoy :)

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)

American science fiction action film. It's about a genetically enhanced chimpanzee who goes from living in captivity to eventually leading an ape uprising against humanity. Great cast (James Franco, Andy Serkis, John Lithgow, Freida Pinto, Tyler Labine, David Oyelowo, Tom Felton, Brian Cox and more). There's a "Take your stinking paw off me, you damn dirty ape!" moment in this one as well, but because the rest of the movie is very different to the previous ones that line didn't feel like a copy but an actual homage. It also might help that right after this we get the most iconic moment of the movie, where Caesar, our main ape, actually talks for the first time and says "No!". Some of the CGI looks a bit outdated, but you gotta remember that this movie is 13 years old. Also, why has it taken me this long to watch this movie? It's amazing. If you've only seen the old Planet of the Apes movies and you've been on the fence about watching the new ones I can tell you (about this one at least) that you should absolutely go for it. Highly recommended.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)

American science fiction action film. It's about human survivors battling to stay alive in the wake of a deadly pandemic, while Caesar (the genetically enhanced chimpanzee from Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)) tries to maintain control over his expanding ape community which could lead to an all-out war between apes and humans. Great cast (Andy Serkis, Jason Clarke, Toby Kebbell, Keri Russell, Gary Oldman, Kodi Smit-McPhee and more) delivering great performances. The beginning of this movie felt very much like life imitating art, because a lot of the things that have been said here about the worldwide pandemic, have actually been said during our own worldwide pandemic, years after this movie came out. Well, in-universe, things are getting spicy. While the previous movie was an origin-story (and a damn good one at that), this is already 10 years later and we're very much in the action. Definitely looking forward to what they've done in War for the Planet of the Apes (2017) and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024), but for now I can highly recommend this one.

I had the same feeling with two tv shows that actually came about after the pandemic had happened but were written way before and shot before as well. Station Eleven and Sweetooth. Both very very recommended btw, if you ever stray from movies.

War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)

American science fiction action film. It's about an all-out war between apes and humans and Caesar setting out to avenge those he has lost. Great cast (Andy Serkis, Steve Zahn, Woody Harrelson, Amiah Miller, Terry Notary, Karin Konoval and more) delivering great performances. Andy Serkis' Caesar has been a stand-out in the trilogy of course. The CGI got exponentially better over these last three movies. Overall this is absolutely one of the greatest trilogies out there. Highly recommended if you haven't seen it yet and now I'm very excited for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024) later.

Everything about the movie is awesome but it's true that the story wouldn't have reached the depth it did without Serkis.
I just wish this guy got his due somehow someday. He's been so instrumental in the success of major franchises and movies in the past 25 years but he has been totally snubbed because award people seem to think motion capture is not acting and CGI improves performances...
which clearly isn't the case and anyone just has to watch Sam Worthington in Avatar to realize that :P

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)

American science fiction action film. Watched this at the cinema yesterday. It's about a young chimpanzee who embarks on a journey alongside a human woman to determine the future for apes and humans alike. This seems like the start of a new trilogy and it can't really stack up against the last three movies, but it's very good for what it is. With this movie being set 300 years after the last one and picking up mere minutes after that one you can really see how Caesar's teachings have been passed down through the ages and how differently different groups of apes seem to understand his words. This movie definitely has the best visual effects in the franchise, so I really hope someone gets an Oscar nom for this. Overall it's a very good movie if you've seen the others but it's not quite on the level those have been. Still, definitely something I can recommend, especially on the big screen.
