Activating gift with pre-order bonus after release?

If I get advanced warfare day zero edition gift after release will the pre-order bonus work or do I have to use the gift before the release of the game?

AFAIK gifts-pre-orders will grant pre-order bonuses at any time. Important thing is, they need to be bought as pre-order.
