Portal 1 was better for its harder puzzles for a first play through. Portal 2 puzzles were easier, to play better for the console gamers and their slow moving controllers. Both stories were good but I did not have to think at all in portal 2 so that is why portal 1 is better.

Personaly, I find both parts easy. But I like them. In fact, I love them.

I felt there were a lot of puzzles in Portal 2 that were much harder.. like the ones using the different kind of gels really messed my head up, but in Portal 1 I didn't have to stop once to think it was all straight forward and I beat it in about an hour 45min,

portal 2 lasted a lot lot longer than portal 1, plus its got co-op and the map editor to get 200% of fun out of the game

Portal 1. I liked it better, though I did play it first so the concept was new. I also thought the story was better in general along with the humor and suspense. Portal 2 is really good, but I felt a bit disappointed with the single player. Multiplayer is OK but wasn't necessary in my mind.

I played 2 before 1 and it was quite a suprise to see some diffrences. And of course I liked 2 more.

Portal 1.
Finished it 5 times. You felt like you can literally put a portal anywhere and complete the puzzle the way you want. P2 was 'where can I actually put the portal'. Grey walls everywhere. Also, I felt that the gel, the bridge and other stuff like that took away from an actual PORTAL experience. And I didn't like the story. It was too predictable, too long and didn't grab me. Portal 1 length was just perfect to leave the player with this 'holy crap' feeling without dragging the game or making it too short.

I beat Portal 1 in about 2 hours, it's not very long and there's not a tonne of story compared to the second one. The second one I beat in about 6-7 hours, so it's much longer, the story is very rich, and it has multiplayer on top of that. I'd say Portal 2 over Portal 1, but if you want to get the entire story of portal pick up both, Portal 1 tends to be cheap these days anyway

Portal 1's puzzles are more developed and difficult. Portal 2 was very straight forward and never really requires you to stop and think.
Most of all, Portal 1's story was immeasurably better than Portal 2's (GLaDOS as a potato AND your friend... really?)
But Co-Op is nice, so Portal 2 gets a point for that.

I agree 100% with this assessment.
Additionally, Portal 1 was revolutionary in its game mechanics. Portal 2 is more of the same, with added Paint.
Additionally additionally, Portal 1 was tight. Not a lot of extraneous fluff. You can play through all of Portal 1 in less than two hours (especially if you've solved all the puzzles before). It is a lean game, DENSE with content.
Contrarily, as you say, Portal 2's co-op can be absurdly fun with a friend.
