ALL of it, without season pass. Did all the challenges, found all the weed, slathered all the wildlife, collected all the junk, etc. Except for killing that goddamn Horned Graug I've been searching for for almost an hour now. My save says 27h 15m. Veyr very short... I expected it to be waaaaaaay longer, but anyways. Solid 8-9/10. Too lazy to write a full review covering all the points so ask away!

Edit: Found the damn graug!

Shh, Hikkomi. But yes, that's frkn short. Even if I did fast travel a lot. The maps were also pretty small, 2 medium sized maps.

Skyrim sure has spoiled us. Anyway, looking at the game purely in terms of lenght is wrong. Better question is "does it overstay it's welcome?". If not, it's great. But a game too long is worse than a game a bit too short. The latter leaves you wanting more and excited, the former just makes you frustrated with boredom "let's just get this over with".

Actually, you should be looking in terms of "Does this map have good level design? Is there tedium?" Long games aren't necessarily bad, it's when they're made up of uninteresting, boring levels. Half Life 2 for example was particularly long game, but it never got boring. To me, at least, and presumably to great many other folks that played it as well, considering it's the series that made Valve into what it is today.

I'll never spend in my life more than 10€ for a game that ends in 27h.

Sleeping dogs -> awsome game but 25h -> 2x1.89€ -> totally worth it.
Batman series -> even shorter -> humble bundle -> totally worth it.
a copy\paste game -> 27h -> ubber-price -> no way :C

Wouldn't say it's copypaste, pretty fresh imo. Might look like Batman series or Assassin's creed or any of that. But it really feels different from them. It was a short journey but a fun and quality journey. I'm pretty sure they'll do something about the short amount of time of the game hintdlcshint.

That's totally different, one usually goes to cinema to spend a couple of hours with friends watching a film. :|

You can buy a game and spend a couple of hours playing with friends... I mean, in a cinema you don't even talk to your friends!

I get what you mean, but at the same time you pay idk say $11 for a movie (where I am at least) and it lasts maybe 3 hours at most and then I could buy a game and play it maybe 20 hours ?

If I go on a tuesday they have a deal for it to be half price or something, I think it ends up around $7 but I still feel like it can be a waste sometimes (mainly when the movie isn't amazing or at least isn't worth it on the big screen)

I wish the battles could be on a bigger scale. The end was a bit anticlimactic. You don't really create actual armies, just little gangs. They could have done more with those challenges too (Hunting, Survival). No reason to do them other than for achievements. Too many QTE's. Even at the end..

Still a good game though.

Why all these comments about not buying games only because they are short, if you pay full price and the game ends in 7/8 hours and doesn't offer anything else, that i can understand. in these case OP played 27 hours and thought it was great, i would say the money was worth it, just move on to the next one.

$50 for a >10hour game isn't worth it IMO.

You don't have to buy it at full price ;) Kinguin or you know...

Season pass is nothing so far bar some challenge maps and a skin. Story DLC is not released yet. I think there are some DLC runes too, but I dunno which ones. I have the season pass.

Challenge maps aren't Season Pass exclusive, just early access for season pass owners.

"Buy the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor Season Pass to unlock the exclusive Guardians of the Flaming Eye Warband mission and gain early access to the Trials of War challenge series."

I'm the same way, I haven't bought a full price game in about a year. I usually just wait until it's on sale (I didn't even play Skyrim until this last holiday sale). Something about this game and that I had some spare change made me buy it at full price.

So you want to pay $50 for games that are less than 10 hours? >10 hour is greater than 10 hours, you really should go back to school. And the fact that these other people didn't catch it is sad as well.

27 hours for a single player AAA game at an MSRP of 49.99 is pretty decent in all seriousness. Its still longer than many of the Assassins Creed titles. I had 20 hours before I finished the story (I was enjoying it so kept doing missions lol) and Ive got 22 hours as of now as I put in a few earlier today doing side missions and such.

The problem I had with the game most was I thought it was too easy. Gameplay wise its extremely enjoyable.

I finished the story last night and wrote a review.

imo, the gameplay was challenging. Constantly got crowded and while one Uruk was knocking me out the other backstabs me, or both attack at the same time, got me awhile to get into it.

Comment has been collapsed.

I didn't find it very challenging bar the 5 Warchief mission before the endgame starts. I dont want to spoil the game so Im not going into detail here. I kept getting killed by the same one due to the stronghold he was located in. In contrast none of the 3 "major" bosses did not challenge me at all. The final boss sucked gameplay wise. Quick-time events need to die. The regular missions were fun, but also I found them easy.

I know what you mean haha, I just don't know why everyone seems to have to immediately compare everything that is Open-World to Skyrim. Not that it's a bad game.

It definitely could have held more though. Modding support would be great too but who knows, maybe we'll have a few in the future.

It's a very (very) popular game and it's very often compared because it's the biggest open world yet. (for now)

It's just not as good as people make it out to be. There are a lot of other games with large open worlds too. I don't think it's a staple for open world games. Again, not trying to say its bad. Just far from the praise it gets.

^Have to agree with the gentleman above.

25 hours is a great lenght, especially for those who does not have a very lot of time to dedicate to gaming. I'd like to dedicate myself to finishing my games, and I never really get to complete games like Fallout or TES.

Also, remember that this game should have great replayability.

I'm planning to buy it because it's only $27 in the Philippines. but what can you say about the combat system and the quests? Immersive or repetitive?

Permalink

Immersive. As you unlock abilities it gets more and more fun and brutal. If you liked the Arkham combat, you will like this.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The combat progression gets cooler and cooler, you will feel more and more badass. Like for examp, there are these 3 abilities that get charged by either stealth kills, bow kills, or combat kills. For stealth kills you become invisible and time slows down alot and you do all these badass executions for 20 sec, and then for the bow kills you get unlimited fire arrows for 15 secs while the time is also slowed down, for combat kills you do unlimited executions for 20 secs.

Already replied for the combat, the quests get kind of repetitive though, just like in any exploration game.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Iam really enjoying the combat system specially if you remove the "prompts", for me it makes the combat much more challenging and cinematic. The quest are highly repetitive, they are all variants of go there kill X orcs in Y way then kill their leader. What makes the game really interesting is the captains nemesis system.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The slow mo cinematic kills are fine at start, but get really irritating when you get upgrades and almost every other kill is going to be finisher, totally kills the flow of the combat.

It's funny, I see a lot of people in this thread saying the game is too short, they're going to wait til it's cheaper because of it. When I just read this gem about an hour ago, in which the author complains about how games are too long.

True, but if it's part of gaming "journalism" (I use that term loosely) then it should be labeled as an "opinion piece". This is a guy trying to pass his opinion off as fact.

Yeah, in light of recent events, Kotaku is just piece of garbage, no gamer should care about what they say/think... Don't get me wrong, I don't have time to play all games but it never crossed my mind to complain about the length of said games, just because I don't have time to play, EVERY game shouldn't be shaped to fit MY f*cking planning ! Especially when there are already a fackton of short games.

the game's all fairly similar, kill orcs, kill monsters, repeat. It's fun that the named orcs change (one of the warchiefs in mine is called Giggles, don't think I'll ever bring myself to kill him) but you wouldn't need to play a new game for that. The story's pretty linear as well, your choices don't affect how things turn out at all.
