I'm looking to play some video games with really good stories. What games should I play? Thanks!

I don't think others have said these but, for me, the best stories ever told in video games are Alan Wake and the Portal series. Also, very good ones are the Half-Life series, Little Inferno, The Cave, To The Moon and Quantum Conundrum.

Edit: Checked your profile to see which of these you probably played already. Did you actually play the F2P Portal 2 thing with that expensive webcam?

Gabriel Knight 1-3, Broken Sword 1-5, System Shock 2, Deus ex, Omikron: The Nomad soul, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, Clive Barker's Undying, Albion, Max Payne 2, Psychonauts and some others i guess. Sleeping dogs has a cool story.

Alpha protocol (Conspirational, but enjoyable) or Second sight (Good man dies, bad man dies by your hand, love, lost memories and much more.)

Guitar Hero III.....

Oh well. Naruto Shippuden ultimate ninja battle Full burst 3 or whatever the name.
The downside is that you barely play.

I thought Gone Home story was very interesting, but, for what i've seen from other people opinions, it depends from person to person.

Superbrother Swords and Sworcery very interesting too, imo. Beautiful soundtrack and unique gameplay.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow i thought it was pretty good, but don't play that game unless you have a controller, and the camera isn't great but you get used to it. Didn't have the chance to play LOS 2.
Maybe you'll enjoy hotline miami, kind of a mind fuck.

I know other people have suggested these but Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons is a must play, Bastion pretty great story, soundtrack and narrator(Transistor is probably great too, but i didn't played it yet). Thomas was alone pretty cool too. Bioshock, great, Biohock infinite pretty nice too, a bit over-rated imo (as a former physics student, i know that the time and universes travels don't make sense has the way the game presents it), Bioshock 2 got a bit disappointed with the premise that you're playing as a big daddy, which, storywise, doesn't make any sense.

Oh, and recently i finished shadow warrior's story surprised me, most of the game is a careless slaughterhouse of fun, but in the final chapter the mood of the game changes completely and makes for a pretty good ending storywise.

Ride to Hell: Retribution was pretty much the pinnacle of videogame story and cutscenes, makes Last of Us look like dung.

Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, Vampire The Masquerade and Legacy of Kain are all series that tell great stories imo.

It is a bit hard to differentiate between good STORIES and good STORYTELLING... When I put both things in the same "story" package, I come up with my personal Top20 list -- not exactly "what you should play", but anyway:

  1. System Shock
  2. The Last Express
  3. Planescape: Torment
  4. Psychonauts
  5. Grim Fandango
  6. Legacy of Kain (especially Soul Reaver 2)
  7. Bioshock
  8. The Longest Journey
  9. Knights of the Old Republic
  10. Day of the Tentacle
  11. Ultima VI
  12. Final Fantasy VI
  13. System Shock 2
  14. Chrono Trigger
  15. The World Ends With You
  16. Braid
  17. Final Fantasy VII
  18. Silent Hill 2
  19. Heavy Rain
  20. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Here is what the other users of that site think, if you want to check!

I agree with anyone that has 3 Tim Schafer games in their list (4,5 and 10). Grim Fandango is my favorite game ever. Simply a masterpiece. I wish it were on Steam. My disc won't last forever.

Bioshock series definitely. Elder Scrolls also, but then I'm talking about the older games like Morrowind and Oblivion, Skyrim wasn't written so good..Fallout series, Spec Ops: The Line, Portal series,.. and even GTA IV had a pretty good story.
And a classic almost everyone seems to forget, Alice: Madness Returns. In fact, I think A:MR is highly underrated. I guess because it was pretty bloody?

Final Fantasy II (US)
A number of cliched storylines, but I thought they did an awesome job tying them together, and the writing and the music were blended so well.

I second Spec Ops: The Line. I also have a new ones for you: Deus Ex GOTY/Human Revolution! They are both excellent, but the second really made me feel like it could be a possible future.

[Edit] And To the Moon made me ball my manly eyes out! D;
