Hello my fellow Steamgifters,

A friend of mine is having some real problems with her English, and we were discussing fun/easy ways to learn English. I told her that i learned my first English myself when i was about 10 years old by playing a videogame, and she thought that this would be a great way for her to try and learn it herself.

So my question to all of you is this: does anybody know a fun game that isn't obviously aimed at kids (she's 18) which doesn't have any dificult dialogue / could be used for learning English?

lol stop recommending medieval fantasy rpgs or Star Wars games, have her play something in a modern setting like a city building game or The Sims or something where she can actually use what she learns in everyday's life.

If she has trouble with her English you want her to start off with simple stuff, no need for story driven rpgs where she'll have to look up everything in a dictionary. It's not going to be fun if she has to stop playing constantly to look up words. Start off with something easy like Sim City or Civilization for instance where she'll just have to get familiar with the interface to have fun AND the terms she learns will actually be useful.

I'd say Sequence. An RPG styled rhythm game where the dialogue is not just in text but it is spoken too. So she gets to read it as well as hear it! After all learning a language is not just about reading but greatly depends on listening. I even think the English in it is pretty simple. SO maybe she can give it a try :D

Another way are MMORPG's like many have already stated. But On top of the usual ingame story/dialogue I think having a friendly person to play with where they can converse only in English can help a lot.

No the sims would not be good unless you just want to learn the name of furniture. "EEETTABOOOOYAHHH" and then pissing on the floor is not something people who speak English usually do. I'm not sure what game would help, but I don't think it would be an MMORPG.

Furniture names would be more useful than spell/weapon names like "Melf's Acid Arrow" or "Holy Avenger" IMO.

yeah I guess it is a better base to start on, but the Sims themselves don't speak English.

What really helped back in the days were the old-school Sierra adventure games (King's Quest, Police Quest, Space Quest, Leisure suit Larry) were you had to actualy type whatever you wanted your character to do. I was playing with a french/english dictionary in hand since I often figured out what to do but needed to translate whatever I was thinking in words that the game would understand.

An adventure game is probably the best way since they are usually text-intensive and you can go at your own pace. Altough unless you get out the oldies, everything is pretty much point-and-click nowadays.

Almost everygame :D try starting with something not too much complex, like The Legend of Zelda, avoid graphic adventures and RPG for now

I bought KrissX during summer sale and I would say it's a pretty nice puzzle game for English learners.

Teh best games to learn English are:

GTA: San Andreas

KOTOR 1 & 2

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines

Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption (although it's pretty tough in terms of gameplay)

Psychonauts

Morrowind

and you may try getting Rosetta Stone software - imo, extremely nice in terms of learning languages on your own.
also, try watching smth like South Park in English. Fun, entertaining and you get used to the sound of the language quicker.

I'm not sure about games, but if your friend is a native Spanish or Portuguese speaker she could check out Duolingo. You help translate the web while learning a new language.

I would probably have to say Oblivion since it rpg full of verbiage that isn't entirely text based like Morrowind.
