Another metroidvania fan here.

From the poll I've only played Axiom Verge and am currently trying to beat Dead Cells.

  • Axiom Verge is a lot like metroid. It has a really nice world-building/story and a good level design. It has very disappointing bosses. During the first half of my playthrough I felt something was off and I was getting a little bored of going through the ropes but then it picks up pace. I recommend it.

  • Dead Cells is a blast. It is fluid, fast and has a great setup. It is not a metroidvania, though. It is a procedurally generated rogue-like in which you get permanent abilities that allow you to reach secret areas or reach alternative levels on your way to the final boss. You don't backtrack and the map does not open up. Exploration is very limited.

Other games I enjoyed that are not mentioned on your post:

  • Cave Story +
  • Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition
  • Knytt Underground
  • Dust: An Elysian Tail

Have fun with your choice :)

You can try these two metroidvania games I saw on youtube. Both have overwhelmingly positive reviews on steam. I will buy them soon.

Salt & Sanctuary is best metroidvania ever, so any other option is wrong.
Also Dead Cells and Bloodstained aren't metroidvanias.

I'm a metroidvania aficionado, but the only one I own in your poll is Wings of Vi (and I still haven't played). As far as I know Iconoclasts can't be classified as metroidvania, I don't remember why, I guess it's not as much open-world as a metroidvania is supposed to be. Other than that I can recommend are Guacamelee, Giga Wrecker, Shantae series and The Vagrant. Also, if you've never played Cave Story before, that would be the top recommendation.

I would recommend Guacamelee. It's really good and Guacamelee 2 is out now, too.

To add to your list, I recommend the Shantae games. They're great and charming Metroidvanias.
