Well apparently there's a .pdf file that you can find on the Gamescom website here.

It lists games that will be on the lineup for Gamescom.

Do you guys think it's legit? Or are the people from Gamescom just pulling our legs?

Was it though? Here's some more evidence if you guys are still wondering if HL3 will be announced at Gamescom. I personally think it will.

If you look at the mini screen you'll see the HL3 logo, Steam and some other programs.

Of course it was a mistake. They're actually launching 'Ricochet 2'.

Confirmed to be a mistake, false alarm and all that stuff: http://lambdageneration.com/posts/valve-to-reveal-new-unannounced-game-at-gamescom-2012/

Edit: I fail at linking.

Probably, but one can hope right? :)

EDIT: They probably took it down because they want to give fans a heart attack or something, and then when Valve takes the stage they'll hit us with HL3. Maybe they'll leave us with some kind of clue, a snippet or something, who knows. I CAN DREAM DAMN IT.

Yeah, why not. But right now we are getting Counter-Strike Global Offensive and Dota 2. Not to mention the release of the Mann VS Machine update. I guess we can wait a bit longer... after all, who needs Half-Life 3?... Right people?

Well, yes, but despite usually moving people from one project to another when developing their games, Valve does sometimes keep developers working on a single project, as they did in the case of 'Ricochet 2'. So releasing several games or updates in quick succession doesn't always exclude a new launch where a team has been kept consistent.

I guess you're right. If they do announce it it'll probably go down like this:

"A mystery conference is announced for Gamescon. People attending the event suspect it might be HL3 (of course). They attend the conference hoping for the best. The room is lit at first, but becomes pitch black once everyone’s seated. It’s silent for a minute or two, everybody is nervous… All of a sudden, Hazardous Environments blasts out of the speakers in the room and the crowd goes insane like at the announcement of the new Zelda game at E3 2004. The most epic trailer in game history starts playing…"

Lol wtf. They got F1 2011 on the list. Clearly meant to be F1 2012. Would take this with a pinch of salt given the above comment.
