Hello and welcome to the madness!
The challenge is simple: Play and beat any 6 games, starting today, that have been featured in any given Humble Monthly/Choice bundle in one month.

The prize: 2x Death's Door
Note: This means I'm giving away two copies of the game and will have 2 winners.

Game length does not matter and I'm not looking for 100% achievement runs. So long as you play and beat 6 games, I'm happy. You can go easy mode and play a bunch of 1h games or go crazy and play 6 +30h games. So long as they were in a monthly at a given point, it is all good.

Just post a comment with either screenshots/ achievements showing that you fulfilled the criteria and I'll add on Steam and give you the link. Feel free to share your thoughts on the games you've played, but it is not required.

FAQ:

Why you doing this?

I hate money. That and I realized I've been subbed to the monthly for over five years (yes it has been that long, I checked) and it occurred to me that I've barely touched the games I've gotten from it, let alone played them. Figured the same would be true for a few others, so I figured this is a good way to change that. A sensible person would probably unsub in this situation, but please refer to the beginning as to why that will not happen.

I've played the first X minutes of a game, can I pick it for the event?

No. You cannot have any play time or achievements prior to the start of the event. The only exception is idle time from farming Steam cards.

Can I play a MP only game?

No. It needs to have an "end" in order for me to count it as beaten, so it needs to have a campaign/story mode.

If a game was sold as a non-Steam copy in a bundle (origin/uplay/drm-free/etc), can I pick it as a choice if I own a Steam copy?

No. The reason being that those who own a Steam copy would have an extra option that would not be available to everyone who bought the same bundle. If the game was originally sold as a non-Steam copy, but Humble later provided steam keys to everyone who bought the bundle, then the game would be allowed.

Why six games?

The first few monthlies had 6/7 games in them so I went with that.

How long are you going to do this?

Until my credit card statements gives me nightmares.

This event "ends" on October 5th when the next HB Choice releases, though the giveaway itself will end the next day. If you manage to finish game number six in between that time, feel free to post, but know that I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to give you the link in time.

Good luck, have fun and stay safe.
Thanks for reading, and don't forget to be both confused and disappointed.

Made it again! I played:
Swords and Soldiers 2 Shawarmaggedon: Achievements "Redbeard's adventure"
A Hat in Time: Screenshot The game has achievements, but none are for beating it.
Epistory - Typing Chronicles: Achievements "Desert Dream"
Heaven's Vault: Achievements "Complete the Game"
Planet of the Eyes: Achievements "The End"
Fae Tactics: Screenshot Like A Hat in Time, no achievement for beating the game.

I thought I was going to be the first one to finish, then I started playing Fae Tactics... And now, to finally play Monster Hunter Stories. Thanks again!!

Apologies if this has been answered before, but I was wondering about games that have been in a Monthly or Choice but no Steam keys were provided (e.g. ENCODYA, Disjunction or even Assassin's Creed Origins), are they still valid for this event if we own them on Steam?

Hey Cj, will you count the two FRAMED games in the FRAMED collection count as two separate games or does the entire collection count as just one game? If you've finished one but not the other, is the entire collection disqualified?

Interested in the reply as well but it seems as long as the game is on Steam and it was indeed included in the bundle, it would be valid, according to the rules CJ stated here.
I remember someone playing Copoka before and the game was included in a monthly as a DRM free game, before it was even on Steam so that would be the same here.

Sure, it was before the event but technically steam keys for Copoka were never given in the Humble Monthly. They only gave a DRM free copy in the monthly.

While Copoka was originally added to the bundle as a DRM free copy, Humble later gave everyone a steam copy if they purchased the bundle. This is why it would be allowed for this event, since everyone who purchase the bundle would have access to a steam copy.

other thing we can ask, is about redux/ encharted editions of games that where un HB

like, i played Metro Exodus, and some Time ago they give a free copy of Encharted Edition,
or, observer, that the original copy gives you a System Redux version for free.

this ones have diferent steam appID that the one/original gived on HB, but the games are the same with graphic changes/ better performance or DLC for free.

it may be others.

Ugh I really did not want to answer this question since it is messy. My issue is that not all redux/enhanced editions are the same. Some are graphical updates, while others affect gameplay/story by either adding/removing content. I'm inclined to only allow the edition that was originally sold in the bundle for the event. If the publishers update the appid/subid with a new updated version, then it is fine. But if a new appid is generated, then I'm inclined to not allowing it, even if everyone who bought the bundle got a copy of the updated appid for free. I'm still thinking about it, so this is not a definitive answer, but I wanted to show you which way I'm leaning towards.

or, observer, that the original copy gives you a System Redux version for free.

Off topic, but I don't think this was the case. I believe original owners got a temporary discount, but it was not a great one if I remember right.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, I think about (after I post the question) other problems that this can give, like someone playing a mounth one version and in other mounth the other version of the same game.

It definitly will more problematic to track who play what version than anything else.

EDIT: btw, I just look into my account and Observer: System Redux i didnt pay for it, but I get the original by a key, not from HB mountly

That's impossible. Cjcomplex is correct, System Redux was never given for free, it was only possible to pre-order it with a 80% discount for original owners for some period of time a couple of months before its release.

No. The reason being is that it would give some an extra option to choose from when compared to others who bought the exact same bundle. If a steam key is later provided by Humble to everyone who bought the bundle, then it would be fine. But so long as the only copy provided by Humble are non-Steam copies, they are not allowed for the purpose of this event.

This has come up before, but I didn't bother adding it to the FAQ since I thought humble would rarely include non-Steam copies. It is starting to look as though they will be more common, so I will add it to the FAQ moving forward.

lol right? I don't know where HLTB get their times sometimes. I know it's average playtime of people who are sharing their stats but with games like Forager or a lot of rogue-lite/like, they should just discard the card idling times because they completely screw the average.

It did indeed take a while to get those but once I started void runs, with all the drops in there, it made the "grind" faster though.

It's a shame Hopfrog dropped the game before the multiplayer update, that would have been brilliant.

I mean I get it on one hand. You can't expect a game to get expanded forever. Devs do need to move on and get other games sold. They don't live off advertising or anything :P but yeah he made promises he didn't keep and that sucks.

Still, he refunded people who claimed they bought the game for multiplayer.

Sorry for sliding in ultra-late under the closing door.

Here are my games:

Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Heart of the Forest (achievements - "Rooted" is a possible ending achievement) (ending "results screen" screenshot, some spoilers)

Opening with a short game was nice, but this was made a bit awkward by the story Heart of the Forest wanted to tell. You are introduced to a whirlwind of characters in a rather rapid-fire fashion and it's hard to really pick up on any of their likeable or detestable qualities before your character goes through a bunch of werewolf rituals and it's on to the climax. Minor spoiler: I ended up getting most attached to the human companions you meet early on, and they barely factor into the late game storylines.

I do like the interface the developers went with for this one as it feels the closest to what reading a physical CYOA novel felt like.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Shadows of New York (achievements - Good Ending, Bad Ending)

This game lays it on thick with real-world current-events commentary and pop-culture references. Incredibly thick. I'm not against this on a conceptual level; I thought Coteries of New York managed it decently, but I feel the relentless barrage of references reminds me I'm playing a video game and not actually role-playing a would-be vampiress, which detracts from the immersion I generally want from visual novels. Where Coteries felt like an introduction to a New York City vampiric underworld, Shadows feels like some kind of meta-commentary talk show that airs after Coteries.

Some of the jokes do hit, like when a random mugging somehow becomes a debate about UFC fighters. And on that note, this may be the first video game I know of that makes the coronavirus pandemic and lockdowns part of the plot, although it ultimately doesn't affect anything beyond a few lines.

Some spoiler-ish thoughts on the endings: A lot of people say the bad ending feels like the good ending, and I agree with that. I suppose that's part of the author's intent to make you wonder what "good" means in the context of power-hungry vampires.

Family Man (achievement - "The End?")

A Steam review sums up Family Man's appeal perfectly:

By all that is holy, no matter how low my karma is, no matter how many shady jobs I accept...

I WILL read my daughter a bedtime story every single night.

On the bad side, the ending I got felt pretty unsatisfying, even as I went in knowing I got lazy and had bad karma, and I don't really have confidence the harder-to-get endings meaningfully clear anything up.

Anything with timed gameplay makes me feel uneasy, but admittedly the town is small enough that once you get your bearings it's not that bad.

A Case of Distrust (achievements - "Master Sleuth")

Apologies for once again calling upon one of the mainstays of Monthly in a Month, but all things considered it's not too bad a game. The presentation oozes with style, and everything immerses you into the 1900s with a deft balance of imagery and occasional sociopolitical commentary. Some of the detective segments can feel like you're shooting in the dark to figure out what you need to investigate someone, but it's not too difficult a game overall.

Aviary Attorney (screenshots)

(Screenshots created with Dropbox and uploaded using steascree program, as the normal F12 does not work)

The inspiration from the Ace Attorney series is obvious, but adding another game in that genre is another welcome addition in my book. One interesting mechanic it adds is you don't get a game over even if you lose a trial, which is counterbalanced by having limited visits to other locations while you investigate and gather evidence. That means a bad investigation can doom your trial to failure, which doesn't feel great when it happens. On the other hand, the autosaves are pretty generous in the event you do want to erase a mistake. And after all, how many games set themselves during a French Revolution with all humans replaced with dapper animals?

Path of Giants (achievements - "Archaeologist," "Pathfinder")

Cute puzzle adventure reminiscent of Monument Valley and She Remembered Caterpillars, although much less difficult than the caterpillar game. Overall, the difficulty was just right for me, because I often felt stumped for a few minutes until something clicked and it all made sense. I'll have to try some of the bonus levels to see what kind of ramped up difficulty I could be in for.

Hey, just saw your comment and I wanted to let you know that I'm not accepting Not for Broadcast at this time. From my understanding, it is a story heavy FMV that is still in EA, with only 2 of the 3 planned episodes completed. Granted there are multiple paths per episode, but the true ending of whatever path you take won't be known until the game is in 1.0. I pulled this from their road map, that you can find here.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Ouch, that's a bummer for me... I will find another substitute and hopefully be able to finish in time, thank you for looking over my list and telling me now.

Can I get a little more clarification on this though so I don't run into this issue in the future? Not for Broadcast is not valid because it is in early access? The story doesn't come to a conclusion per-say (even though there is a climactic story moment that could have been called the end and I would have not thought twice about it), but there is an end credits and achievements that signal you have reached an ending in the current state.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The story doesn't come to a conclusion per-say

That is the issue right there. I need a definitive ending for me to count it as being "beaten" which I cannot do with a campaign still under development. It would not be fair to allow 2 episodes to be counted as completed today while telling folks 6 months from now to finish 3 once the game is in 1.0.

Can I get a little more clarification on this though so I don't run into this issue in the future?

If there is a possibility where the answer is not a definitive "yes" to the question "Will this game count?" assume that I will not allow it. I try to avoid case by case analysis for every edge case since I cannot guarantee that I will answer these questions in a timely manner. So when in doubt, assume I won't allow it would be best option when moving forward.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thank you for the clarification, I will be more cautious in the future.

I agree that making a determination for each game would be burdensome, so applying a rule that Early Access games are not valid (thankfully EA titles aren't super common in the bundles) would probably make the most sense, for the same logic that you just explained.
Any game in Early Access by definition will have more content when released fully, so if the 'completion' status is judged not by the current state of the game but by potential future content then I couldn't see any Early Access title being accepted for this event.

I'm not entirely sure I'd be able to finish this month due to some personal stuff but I have a few new wins after joining Pandora so now's a good a time to try as any! Swapped out Verlet Swing for Warhammer Vermintide. I was having fun, vibing to the the Verlet Swing's atmosphere when out of nowhere, bam! Level 90. Ended up looking at someone doing it (the quick method is kinda dumb and I cannot find any videos of the 'normal' way), spent about as much time on just level 90 as I did on the other 89 levels of the game, took a break and looked at the other levels (especially the final level) and immediately noped out. Twitch reaction stuff is not my forte and I read someone spent at least 6 hours on just level 98.

Also had to swap out Styx with Tacoma due to certain issues with my laptop, rip.

No. "Play and beat any 6 games, starting today, that have been featured in any given Humble Monthly/Choice bundle in one month." The start date of the event is when the bundle launches which is September 7th for this month. Any game started prior to that cannot be used for this event.

Hiya CJ. Hope all is well. Ill try to play enough games this month to make this happen. :D

Question: I learned to speedrun Hollow Knight, but have put 0 hours into it on my Steam copy. If I play it on Steam, does that count or does it go against the spirit of the event? :P
