I just did it! The games I played are:
By the way, thank you very much for doing this. I feel guilty about the size of my backlog, and I find it hard to play games with so much to do. This was the perfect excuse, and I plan to come back for more in the following months.

Reviews:
Vampire: The Masquerade - Shadows of New York: It was a fun game and the first bigger visual novel I've played. The story was pretty fun and lasted longer than I expected. I ended up getting the good ending and had a pretty enjoyable time overall. Might look into more visual novel games in the future.
Guacamelee! 2: Guac 2 was a lot of fun. I enjoyed the first, but had some issues with it. The sequel definitely felt better overall and I had a lot of fun with it. Even after finishing, I went back and played a bit more to complete 100% sans DLC stuff.
Tomb Raider (2013): Tomb Raider was pretty good. Felt similar to modern Assassin's Creed games, but a bit more linear. The game definitely felt cinematic, but I disliked the action command cutscenes (were more popular when this released iirc) and an early forced stealth mission. I had some problems with navigation and the rewards for finding collectibles felt pretty underwhelming. Overall, it was a pretty good play through. I'd be pretty upset if I had to play through the sequels after not liking it. lol
Rise of the Tomb Raider: Rise was mostly an improvement, as most sequels are. It fixed a lot of the annoying action command cutscenes, stealth was optional instead of forced, and it felt a bit less linear with more to do. Unfortunately, between all the miscellaneous collectibles AND needing to loot resources for crafting, it got a bit tedious at times. Multiple side quests were "go here to find item a, then go here to find item b, then meet me at this place" and that got old quick. Aside from tedious (yet optional) side quests and too much looking for shit, I think the game was a good experience overall.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider: I feel this was the best of the reboot trilogy overall. I had two major issues with the game compared the previous ones. One was the massive amount of rumble from the controller. The frequency in which it happened was not too bad, but more so the force of it. I think earthquakes in the storyline were supposed to be represented by the rumble, but it was way too strong overall. There was no option to adjust it rather than on/off and I wanted the feedback from it, but it just made parts somewhat awkward. My other issue was the high amount of jump scares compared to the previous games in the trilogy. Im not big on them and usually avoid survival horror games mostly due to them and there were just a lot. I enjoyed the story for the most part and think that this correct issues with crafting/looting to a decent point. There were still some forced stealth missions and some tedious platforming, but it was a good experience overall.
Yooka-Laylee: This is clearly a modern era N64 platformer, for better and for worse. The game has trimmed down on the shear number collectibles. It really did feel like a reskinned Banjo-Kazooie (I know that is exactly how it was intended based on the original Rare staff being the creators) and while it was fairly fun overall, there was a bit too much from the past that was translated over from that era. The camera was usually fine, but was still awkward and hard to manage at times. There were still a lot of things to collect and very little instruction of what exactly to do. The lack of a map feels particularly dated and it really hindered the overall exploration from being a fun and exciting world to, I dunno where I saw the thing and I need to look all over until I can find it again. Honestly, all of these grievances I have I could been fine with and said it all, but put the rest of the game in a good light. Unfortunately, the final boss was fight was the absolute worst. I was so frustrated and it took me numerous attempts. Even while maxing out most things I had control of, it still was obnoxious. The combat overall was very brushed over, with most enemies going down in one or two hits or previous bosses mostly platforming and not traditional combat, so having to do a bunch of different things in that final boss went from interesting to frustrating and I honestly would've taken a break and potentially just stopped had it not been for the Monthly in a Month. Before that final boss, I was fairly happy overall. Now Im ready to uninstall and not look back.
Favorite game of the month: Shadow of the Tomb Raider!

Yeah. It was a good time. I got the first early last month from Fanatical and got the other two through HB during the Square Enix sale. Unfortunately, I am running out of shorter games and am gonna struggle in whatever month has me down to Middle Earth: Shadows of Mordor. lol
Comment has been collapsed.
Haha yeah that's going to be a rough month for sure!
You can always count on HB to have short games in the new bundles though so even if you don't get them, you may win them on SG.
Me, on the other hand, tend to get sucked in some "shorter games" and end up with 10 times the hours on HLTB and then I have to rush through the others. Duh!
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah. Using this to clean out my backlog is so wonderful, but it sometimes has me rushing games or not playing through DLC/side content because I need to beat X more games. And there are a few non HB games I wanna start, but havent had the time to get into. Although a bigger reason for not having as much time is because I just dont feel like playing a game for a day or throw a few hours into Slay the Spire/MTG Arena instead. lol

Spaaaaaaaaace!
(Won't get distracted this month for sure ยซ_ยซ)

Cyber Hook | Loved it. Short but sweet, excellent first person platformer with excellent movement tech. If you got this one last month, don't sleep on it. |
One Step From Eden | Really liked it, one of the more interesting roguelites I've played. |
Rock of Ages 3 | It's okay. The campaign isn't as good as previous games in the series, mainly due to the need to grind stars from minigames in order to progress. Admittedly, I haven't gone into the map editor, which is the game's main feature. |
War for the Overworld | Really liked this one, I'm pretty terrible at it, though. Looking forward to playing the DLC. |
The Ambassador | Mediocre. Pretty basic twin-stick shooter with underwhelming weapons. There's quite a few weapons but most of them are just useless and enemies are pretty basic and rely on 'being invincible until they attack you, causing them to become vulnerable for a second' to be any challenge. Otherwise, enemies just charge at you blindly and you use the time-slowng mechanic to kite them. Overall, the game feels like something I'd expect to play on Newgrounds for free, extended out to about 3.5 - 4 hrs. |
Evoland: Legendary Edition | Since this one is a standalone bundle of two games, I'm playing both for the challenge. Evoland 1 was OK, a short and simple Zelda-like, a little rough in places. Evoland II was a much more refined game, and a much more fleshed out one to boot. The game has a lot of different play styles within it, and some of them feel a bit more polished than others; I feel it would have been better to focus on the Zelda-style dungeon crawling. I liked both games overall, and I'm glad I played them, but I'm not really interested in 100% completion and probably won't replay them, not for a while, at least. |

I wanted to focus on something else this month, but ME is #1 on my wishlist <3

This is the first of these events that I'm participating in, hope I'm doing everything right by just playing these 6 games to the end.
Game | Bundle | Playtime / hours | Achievements | Doneness |
---|---|---|---|---|
Whispers of a Machine | January 2020 | 6.2 | 20/25 | yes, got ending achievement |
Project Warlock | February 2020 | 8.5 | 19/20 | yes, got ending achievement |

Red Faction Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered | June 2019 | 16.7 | 19/57 | yes, got ending achievement (Red Dawn) |
For future reference, games that don't have a storyline/campaign and are sandbox-esque in that you don't get an ending (eg. Kerbal Space Program, Rimworld, Stellaris) shouldn't be considered?
edit: I replaced Paratopic with Red Faction Guerilla.

I can't miss this one! ๐ I'm really looking forward to the remastered Mass Effect trilogy, I played 1 & 2 a loooooong time ago, but never got around to trying the third one. I'm also currently playing ME: Andromeda which is surprisingly good (given all the terrible things said about it at launch)... ๐

CJJJJJJJJJJJJJJ! Another month you spoil us!! Thank you again and again for the event! You are making it so much easier for us lazy bums to play through our backlogs!
Starting with Slime San because I just won it in PA and I suuuuuuck at precision platformers (it is known) but never mind, it only took me a couple of hours to learn how to wall jump so it'll be a breeze from now on and it'll probably only take me 20+ hours to complete the basic levels everyone else does in 9 hours. Oh boy. What did I get myself into?
Yeah there's no way I'm finishing the 100 levels. 25 pretty much killed me already. It'll take more time than a month.
Moving on.
A Case of Distrust was pretty good. Plays more like a visual novel than a real detective game but the art is cool and the settings are too. I hope there's another one.
Epistory is a must play. If anyone has it sitting in their library unplayed, like I did... Play. It. Now. You won't regret it.
I initially selected it basically because my controller has been given me headaches and I was looking for games I could play with my keyboard (I know you can technically play 95% of games with mouse and keyboard but I hate it) and oh wow, it's a beautiful and one of a kind experience.
Highly recommended.
I have two longer games in mind to finish the month so I was looking for something short and sweet and opted for Scanner Sombre. I enjoyed the exploration and it's simply beautiful. The story however feels like a pretense to the gameplay more than a well crafted plot. Not going to spoil it here but the ending left me a little "oooook soooo... alright then". Feels like a great exploration game that needed to come to some sort of twist to explain why it even existed, I don't know.
Anyway, on to Pillars of the Earth for some medieval backstabbing!
Wow. That's definitely a game I'll keep around on my computer... for when I can't fall asleep. Perfect cure for insomnia.
I finished with Tacoma and well, I feel a bit like I'm 0 for 5 this month. I was hoping for a great story, from all reviews, but there really wasn't much to it.
Oh well, next month, I'll make better choices ;)

Hello and welcome to the madness!
The challenge is simple: Play and beat any 6 games, starting today, that have been featured in any given Humble Monthly/Choice bundle in one month.
The prize: Mass Effectโข Legendary Edition
Game length does not matter and I'm not looking for 100% achievement runs. So long as you play and beat 6 games, I'm happy. You can go easy mode and play a bunch of 1h games or go crazy and play 6 +30h games. So long as they were in a monthly at a given point, it is all good.
Just post a comment with either screenshots/ achievements showing that you fulfilled the criteria and I'll add on Steam and give you the link. Feel free to share your thoughts on the games you've played, but it is not required.
FAQ:
Why you doing this?
I hate money. That and I realized I've been subbed to the monthly for over five years (yes it has been that long, I checked) and it occurred to me that I've barely touched the games I've gotten from it, let alone played them. Figured the same would be true for a few others, so I figured this is a good way to change that. A sensible person would probably unsub in this situation, but please refer to the beginning as to why that will not happen.
I've played the first X minutes of a game, can I pick it for the event?
No. You cannot have any play time or achievements prior to the start of the event. The only exception is idle time from farming Steam cards.
Can I play a MP only game?
No. It needs to have an "end" in order for me to count it as beaten, so it needs to have a campaign/story mode.
Why six games?
The first few monthlies had 6/7 games in them so I went with that.
How long are you going to do this?
Until my credit card statements gives me nightmares.
This event "ends" on May 4th when the next HB Choice releases, though the giveaway itself will end the next day. If you manage to finish game number six in between that time, feel free to post, but know that I cannot guarantee that I'll be able to give you the link in time.
Good luck, have fun and stay safe.
Thanks for reading, and don't forget to wonder in awe at the vast beauty of space.
