RPGs are basically the main reason my backlog keeps growing. They suck up so much time but the experience is so worth it. Fallout, Persona, Deus Ex, Mass Effect, Chrono, Dark Souls, among others have been some of the most fun I've had with video games. And there are so many more in my backlog (mostly on my PS Vita and PC) that I'm looking forward to trying.

What I'd like to hear, though, is what you would love to see in an RPG? Better crafting systems, vast lore, or field effects?

Speaking for myself, I'd like to see neural network implementations that allow real conversations and the ability to interact with any object. And yes, I realize that's more just about waiting for the technology to get there than creative game designs, but I'm quite fond of "immersion".

By the way, for the visionaries out there, I have a private giveaway going for RPG Maker VX Ace (Lv.1+). If you've got a great idea and don't already own it, I will (somehow) message you a link to the giveaway. If you have a great idea and wish to enter, please share it with us and notify me that you would like to enter in the comments. I will add you on Steam and send you a link.

Skilled based combat, i know its kinda backwards whit the hole build your character thing, but if Dark Souls and Witcher 3 can do surely other can.

Morrowind character skills based combat is great for giving a sense of progression and growth trough the game but the hole missing thing at the start surely can be done better, and dont get me started with the no skill mindless cookie clicker combat of Skyrim.

I'd really like to see a dynamic story. If you somehow manage to kill the bad guy early on, you can assume his throne / mantle / what have you.
Or just more RPGs where choices really matter and affect the outcome of the story instead of everything being predetermined.

We always have the king relying on us to do this or that quest to save the world. Why can't we kill the King, take over the throne, and then save the world to make people follow us / join our kingdom?

You should try Tyranny.

In the prologue you'll be making decisions that really affect the main game. I dont think it will change the ending though. You're also playing an evil character which is nice for a change. I'm not really far into that game tbh, BF1 is eating all my gaming time.

Tyranny is on my wish list, I just can't afford it right now.

I do have some of the Overlord series in my backlog, you also play as the antagonist in that series.

I always like looting for some reason.
I remember playing Daggerfall and taking everything expensive until my inventory was full, rushing to the exit and loading everything into a cart, head back, rince and repeat. Really cleaning out a dungeon and then take it back to a merchant to sell it. It was completely useless but fun. I doubt I would enjoy that now, dont have that much time to blow.

Exploring, finding interesting and odd places or characters.
I loved exploring in some of the Might and Magic Games, Fallout 2, Arcanum and Ultima 6 and 7.

Getting really sucked into a sidequest (Witcher 3 ftw!)

A huge skill tree which REALLY makes you think about your choices.

Open world.

Owning property, farms, industry

It seems to be an unpopular opinion, but I really dont like jrpg's in general (some exceptions: Chronotrigger. FF 7, 8, 9 and 10. Legend of Dragoon. The Last Remnant. Yes, all are " older" titles, I cant really stand those new jrpg's).

I want to see completely different games depending on my decisions, I'm drawn to the "Decisions matter" tag. I love how in Mass Effect you bond with your crew and normally it determined if they live or die by the end of the game, how in the Witcher 1 and 2 you have some story differences according how you play out some situations and in 3 I've read it gets boosted (planning to build a desktop to play that marvel this year). Moreover I really enjoy Telltale games although in the end I've seen very little impact in your decisions since it would be way more costly to develop new game settings and having different characters to live up until the end instead of killing them by the end of chapters.

So yeah, it's way too expensive but I dream with an RPG that you play completely different games depending on your decisions, so far I must content myself with have small but interesting differences at least.

I would love to see a similar game to Fallout 4, based on a real scenario (real environments, items, weapons, crafting).

I love games that are inspired by reality. For example, I love so much THIS WAR OF MINE, because there are no FAKE THINGS. I would love to play something like that in a First Person game, with RPG elements. Ohhh it would be so amazing! But unfortunately there are no so much games with these things.

I'd definitelly love to see more RPGs (or games in general) where you play as a bad guy. I always tend to root for the villains, so I very much enjoy playing as one :)

Also, RPGs where stealth is a valid option!
