It's Diwali Festival for us and we celebrate the victory of good over evil this day every year since the ancient times in our culture.
I had added our culture deliberately because of many people across countries celebrate it :] also I thought of it as a nice time to promote "Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam"
Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is a Sanskrit phrase found in Hindu texts such as the Maha Upanishad, which means "the world is one family".

Being a festival of lights, things are looking up all around me, but pangs of blue hit me just as i was about to sleep. I was reminiscing my happier, wilder college days, and I realized I had no one to share the feeling with.
Time sure passes fast. So I wish you live the life you always wanted! And live it now!

Happy Diwali :')

Sorry for late replies, have been a bit tied up!
More info regarding the festival courtesy my brother :
The fourth day of the Diwali Festival (20 October 2017) has various meanings across India. In north India, Govardhan Puja is celebrated as the day when Lord Krishna defeated Indra, the god of thunder and rain. In Gujarat, it's celebrated as the start of a new year. In Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, the victory of Lord Vishnu over demon king Bali is celebrated as Bali Pratipada or Bali Padyami.

The fifth day of the Diwali Festival (21 October 2017) is known as Bhai Duj. It's dedicated to celebrating sisters, in a similar way that Raksha Bandhan is dedicated to brothers. Brothers and sisters get together and share food, to honor the bond between them.

May the festival of light be the harbinger of joy and prosperity. As the holy occasion of Diwali is here and the atmosphere is filled with the spirit of mirth and love, here's hoping this festival of beauty brings your way, bright sparkles of contentment, that stay with you through the days ahead.
Best wishes on Diwali and New year.

My favorite aspect is that the family is together and my mother is very enthusiastic about this festival!

That sounds lovely! c: I'm really glad you get to spend time with your loved ones and that your mom is so happy.

I read through the wiki page - I'd heard of Diwali before but didn't know much about it - and the rangoli look simply beautiful. I saw a few made out of flower petals that were stunning.

:D Of course! I love seeing different types of artwork.

If I may, I have a question. Why is there a pair of feet in the middle of some of the rangoli? Does it stand for something?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The feet signify the coming of our Gods/Goddesses to our home.
In Hinduism, it is believed that God Ganesh (Lord of Success) and Goddess Lakshmi ( Lord of wealth and prosperity ) visit each household on Diwali, so we light "diya" the earthen bowls /candles so they know where to come.
Mythologically this day marks the victory of Ram over Ravan ( Good over evil ) as per Ramayana texts.
The "Kalash" or pot structure is symbolic of holiness.

Scientifically, the lighting of Diyas cleanses the excess of insects/pests as they are attracted to light

As absurd/biased I may sound, but all our customs have a scientific reasoning relevant to the modern day science.

Thank you for telling me, and you don't sound absurd at all. If any one culture is 'absurd', then they all are - any culture's customs could be made to sound really weird.

Yours sound really cool and they do make sense - and if anybody makes you feel like you have to defend them, then they're jerks.

It is essentially colored powder. Paint is used for preparing the base as white, but in my case base was floor tile so paint was not needed! :)
