I do protest to this. Not everyone has the memory of a sponge and remember every synonym (or niche terminology) by heart.

I actually agree with you. There is absolutely no point in trying to remember every single meaning of every single word, being fluent in all dialects and all slangs of the vernacular. It's more important to have something to say rather than to know how to say.

It's just that "protest" word you used... Couldn't help it.

Both are equally important skills and the weight of which side takes importance is completely dependent on the situation. But during a lengthy project, it's very unlikely that you've never turned to a reference book multiple times, if only to quell your fears on abusing the same descriptors or verbs every few pages. (He whispered; she whispered; they muttered; the book fell to the floor, thudding on carpet as the front door slammed shut; etc.)

It's a psychological thing, since the readers are far less likely to notice it unless it's blatant. For an example, check Twilight's ridiculous obsession with murmuring EVERY DIALOGUE THAT ISN'T SPOKEN NORMALLY. I think it features abuse of caps lock too. Either that or "Bella yelled upstairs at her father for being an obtuse, old man with common sense".

While they both are equally important the latter can be learned, unlike the former which is either exist or don't.

If it helps, the same quote also says that he should have read the dictionary front-to-back 3 times and lent it to someone else.

I would never lend a dictionary to anyone (I can't imagine them ever leaving this room), but using them as sleeping aid is something I can personally attest to. Very useful, and cheaper than sleeping pills.

A man's ethical behavior should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.

Edit: I was trying to find that Munch quote in the original Norwegian, but I can't see it anywhere.
