Hi SG, I've been debating about the removal of our sales section for quite some time. It had a place in my heart since it was related to the first Steam project I worked on, but our focus has been on giveaways for the past 5 years. During that time a number of alternatives dedicated to tracking Steam sales have started up, and I think they do a great job at filling that niche. Last month the sales section was used by only 2% of our users, and it consisted of 0.2% of our total traffic. It's clear our users are here for giveaways, and I agree with them, it's what we do best. I'd like to see our community continue to grow in the coming year (we're approaching a million users!), and I think keeping our focus and resources on giveaways is the best way to achieve that goal.

did it really take you two months to realize it went missing though while still visiting it daily?

Nope, it was only just today that I felt compelled to ask about it. Thank you.

I never used it and won't miss it. I knew about it, have visited it once or twice in the past... but as you said, there are better sources for that, and this website is for giving away games.

Personally I won't miss it, I only tried it once or twice (I always used ITAD). And apparently it wasn't getting that much use by the community.
Good bye sales section.

We appreciate all your hard work CG, thank you for all you do, congrats on your future first million users!
It's normal that things have to change, sometimes we have to let go things that mean or meant a lot, but we should think it's for the best while we adapt ourselves and our projects; towards the greater good and a brighter tomorrow...

I didn't use it much, but I did use it during sales to find the best deals. Although it had its use, I think it was a good call to remove it if it doesn't generate much activity since it's unnecessary space being wasted. Thanks for keeping us updated.

Maybe having a million users is a good time to start freeing up some names. So many people made an account and then never came online again for more than 3 years! A lot of those people have claimed names that others might want.

I knew there was something odd about the top bar!

Jokes aside, I used it from time to time, but based on the data you posted it sounds like it was good decision.

Frankly, I didn't even notice even the bar has changed until someone made a thread about the removal of the Sales button before this announcement.

Gonna miss that so much...the sales page worked fine for me, showing my wishlist itens first, I thought that it should be popular..

Steam already reminds me when one of my wishlisted games is on sale but I also liked to see what offers there were on steam on a glance.

I think it was an interesting addition to this site :(

I preferred it as it was before Version 2 updates, a few features were never included in the update (store toggle, sort order, etc) so I stopped using it since I couldn't filter as I wanted. Sadly, the Steam store by itself is terrible (no sort by discount with current sales, deals often repeat over pages of items since they seem to ignore other sort features with Sort By Price, etc.

I used it on rare occasion, but if it saves you/support time and saves DB space or CPU cycles, then yes, probably best to delete it.
You never forget your first love Steam project!

why we have a trades button still though?

Because it links to the site the trades were moved to. I think that's pretty obvious.

thanks captain obvious. i meant if it's clear "users are here for giveaways" then why have a trades button? after-all they aren't here for trades.

It is more of a link. Considering its a seperate site completely...

i know, but as it sits, this site is encouraging people to leave steamgifts.com and goto steamtrades.com and not come back. match one way or the other, idc which way.

either add a steamgifts.com button to steamtrades.com to return back to SG, or remove the trades button from SG.

Permalink

Because then the site would be flooded with users who only use trading making forums titled "where is the trades section?" and everyone linking them to the other site...

0.2% used the sales and I used it here and there. But a hell of a lot of people use and only use SG for trading xD

fair point on the topic flood on forum. but tbh i'd love to know the % of forum users. i'd be willing to bet it's less than 1% also. could just do away with that as well. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

It's really just a link, while the sales part was a feature that wasn't really used as cg mentioned above.

The site was recently moved, so it's important the button remains for now, so users that have been away, or missed the announcement are able to easily find it.
