I'm wonder if you lost some Firefox users when you started hosting it yourself. I'm not saying hosting it yourself was a bad thing, but unless you were a member of the Enhanced Steam group, you never would have known about the change. I didn't know, I just noticed when it quit working that it hadn't been updated in a while and was gone from the Firefox add-on site. I just assumed the add-on died off, but I later found out from a friend that was a member of the Steam group that I had to download the new version from the Enhanced Steam site.

This is something I'm looking into. Ironically, Enhanced Steam started out as a Greasemonkey script but quickly evolved beyond Greasemonkey's capabilities. It's possible it could be back-ported, but such a version probably won't ever be able to reach feature parity with the Chrome version.

Waterfox currently but I'm always looking out for better ones when I get the time. Mozilla hates freedom.

Would turning updates off on Firefox keep ES running fine as-is? I'm fine with how it works now, and have zero interest in switching to Google Spybot.

The existing extension (v7.3) should work fine up through Firefox 40's release later this year. However, if Valve changes something that interferes with one of Enhanced Steam's features and requires a bug fix, you'll need to either live with the bug, use a different version/browser, or disable Enhanced Steam.

Correct. The source code is available here:
https://github.com/jshackles/Enhanced_Steam_Firefox
And it can be compiled into an XPI using the latest Addon SDK

Been quite a while since I last used the extension so won't affect me but nonetheless I am not surprised. These days there isn't really a best browser any longer as it depends entirely on what you are doing and things working across multiple ones seem to be turning into a pipe dream.
I just hope it will be a while before I am forced into using three browsers.

I used to use Chrome until I found out that Chrome is the resource hog now and switched back to FF. I really liked Enhanced Steam, but I'm not going to use a standalone app just for browsing Steam nor go back to Chrome.

If you are on Windows you could use the standalone Enhanced Steam version that jshackles has on his website.
