I'd definitely advise playing the The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey though, if at all possible, since they're really good games (though a bit dated of course!) and you'll relate much more to the characters and be happy to see some again! But Dreamfall Chapters is a good game on its own, so it'd be a shame not to play it, just because you haven't had the opportunity to play the other games.

No, just the 5 episodes (also called "Books") of Dreamfall Chapters.
The Longest Journey / Dreamfall: The Longest Journey are different games, not different episodes of the same game.
