Hey, so I've been wondering for awhile(but never felt like making a thread).

How do you guys feel about self promoting on steamgifts?(Or other places I guess.)

People advertising their youtube channel, their stream, their greenlight game, their tumblr/website, their kickstarter, a contest they are trying to win. Etc etc.

Do you guys not mind? Do you hate them? Do you guys not mind if their is a giveaway? Do you hate them even if there is a giveaway? Do you only dislike it if the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves? Do you not mind certain self advertising? Like kickstarters are okay, but trying to win a content isn't? (Answer similar questions if you want. :0)

Let me know in the comments. I'm really curious as to how the people of steamgifts feel about self promoting.

If you leave a comment on here explaining why you don't/do mind self advertising I will invite you into a secret private giveaway in a week. What's the giveaway for? It's a secret! (And I haven't decided yet.) [Make your comment AT LEAST or 2 sentences long. More is better though. :3] (Last day to comment to enter the giveaway is Saturday night 8pm pst.)

Giveaways here!

Personally I hate all of them really. Only ones I don't mind too much are kickstarters(even though I hate kickstarters) and group recruiting threads/group threads. The contest winning stuff is the worse in my opinion, especially since it's pretty much cheating. Greenlight is awful as well, all they do is say "We will give keys to SG" and they will get tons of votes even of the game is garbage. One person on her was literally advertising something that looked like a 2 star rated flash ground on newgrounds.

Most of the times, I think it's ok. It's good for then, and an opportunity for us :D

I don't mind the self-promotion threads/giveaways,but I never check out what they're promoting. If it's a good game/channel it'll eventually gain popularity. I'm not even sure if the self-promotions even help, considering I'm not the only one who ignores them.

First I'm against any cheating or bribing that might be done. As far as self promoting I am completely okay with it. I am someone who aspires to make a career out of youtube gaming. Eventually when I get the money, I want to give away gifts on here and then be like "Here is a game. Here is a video of me playing it." Other than that, also casually mentioning something, like my youtube is the same as my steam name, is an acceptable marketing tactic. Like forums and sites like this are acceptable places for it. The only problem I have is begging or completely shamelessly spamming.

Other than that, people have to have ways of getting words out of about their game, kickstarter, youtube, etc. If you see it on the forum, you don't have to click on it. If you see it in a giveaway, you don't have to support it. If I see a greenlight giveaway campaigns that I don't like, I won't click yes; If I like it, I click yes. The same goes for everything. You like their kickstarter? Give it money. You don't? Don't give it money. You like their youtube? Subscribe. You don't? Ignore it. You actually don't even HAVE to look at any of it. So for that reason, I don't see why anyone should complain. You don't have to click on anything.

Promoting yourself on Steam Forums is cause to be banned. Just sayin. But not against the rules in Steamgifts apparently.

I don't mind people telling you about there stuff in a Give Away description, as long as it's optional to check it out what's the harm. People signing up just to shout about there game/channel whatever on the forums are annoying though.

The way I figure it, it's much like a company hosting a giveaway for either one of their own products or a product that compliments their product (like alienware game giveaways). It's promotion through positive reinforcement. It's a little bit of "here, have a free game. Also if you're interested I/we're doing this cool project/making this game etc." It's beneficial to everyone involved. Also, if you're not interested in what it is they have to say, it's quite easy to ignore the description of a giveaway.

Self-promotion doesn't bother me, as long as it's done decently. For instance, if someone (such as yourself, lol) or a dev, promotes themselves in order to get word out about their stuff, that's fine with me, in fact, I've learned about some really awesome things via self-promoters. HOWEVER, if they shamelessly praise themselves, or repeatedly promote themselves/their product in the same venue, (i.e. on the same forum, or the same fb page,)then it gets extremely annoying, and even if I like their product, it turns me off of it.

I don't mid people asking you to check out a link in a public giveaway, it's not like anyone is being forced to check the link.

I don't mind. But if there is no description i just ignore it (for example its link to blog/site/video and all author have to say bout it is: "visit/rate/..."). I won't waste my time on random content. Youtube link without description - probably another RickRoll troll. Blog without description - cats/games/porn - that is how i see it. You want my attention - tell me first what you are offering.

Hope you understand - didn't use this language for a while.

I mostly don't mind if they do. I just got a problem with those who self promote their youtube channels without good content. E.g.: A guy asked me to check out his channel, with about 10 vids uploaded. Hist "best" vid was only viewable at 480p

Eh, I don't really mind, unless the self-promotion is somewhere where it's not allowed. Or, of course, it's promoting spam or a shady product, that ultimately serves the promoter and not the target demographic.

well, they giveaway games right? Just joking, i don't mind about self promoting. as long they are good in the thing they promote. Sometimes i go to a link someone is promoting and i'm like: .. oke you promote for this crap?

yup that's my opinion.

As long ad they don't spam im good with self-promoting, you have the guy that post a link of his YT channel on a forum, and that's okay, but when you are in a public chat, or any other chat with multiple people, there's this guy that spam his channel over and over, that's when i disagree with it

The developers who promote their games don't bother me as much as the youtube channels and other stuff. If they are making a cool game and giving away another game that is bad why hate on them. They are promoting gaming with gaming. Now if it is just some kid who wants people to look at him playing some game on youtube that's a waste of my time and I could care less.

Well, as you know, I've attempted to promote my stream in multiple ways even in the face of those who hate us. Hasn't had much success. Even with multiple attempts (we've done more than just the giveaways I've hosted) it seems nobody wants to support us.

More often than not, we do public giveaways to advertise the stream, though we like to reward regulars sometimes.

I don't mind it if they give something back in exchange. Spamming "Look at me" posts just to get a few extra likes/views has no place here, but spamming "Look at me and have a giveaway too" doesn't seem so bad. Especially if it is something that a lot of people want. IE not just an old $1 bundle games that have been in a dozen bundles already so that everyone has at least 3 copies already. BTA Bundle games are another story, not as many might have those.

I just ignore them most of the time, but they are really annoying "sometimes" . although I have to say that many times I saw people promoting greenlight games that actually look good. so i don't know, I guess in some cases that's "forgivable" at least for me. :x

I don't mind it on SG most of the time. I'd rather have a dev promoting his own game by giving away a few copies of it (but not pushing you to do something in return) than getting forced to vote for something I can't even judge in order to obtain a game.

Sometimes, through self promoting, you get to discover real gems you would have never head of otherwise.

I don't mind and in the beginning I even supported some indies that self-advertised through giveaways by actually going on their greenlight page, taking a look at the game and most of the time voting "Yes". I even adviced some other Indie devs to go on Steamgifts and self-advertise since I think it's a good way to promote your game while providing steamgifts with more gifts. Lately I noticed that a lot of shovelware Indie devs are advertising their games though. I don't mind them advertising their game, but it's somewhat obvious that they've just ported some shitty (cheap) mobile game to PC and try to get greenlit for a small cash in. It's obvious that their game won't even sell on steam since they ask for 10$+ for the PC version when their mobile version is available for 1-2$. I've noticed that I rarely visit their greenlight pages now. I was kinda curious a year ago about what games those Indies that do advertise here created, but those shovelware Indie devs kinda ruined it for me and now I fear I might even ignore the greenlight page of a legitimately good game because I'm tired of looking up the trash others offer all the time.

To sum it up: I don't dislike it and I chose to ignore their ads/description when I can't be bothered looking up their greenlight page. I think it's good that they provide Steamgifts with some rarer and more expensive games, though. In the end it's a good thing, since you can just ignore their ads and still join their giveaways.

I think it's fine when advertise their youtube channels/streams/etc in their giveaway descriptions. I don't mind the threads that do this, at least if there's a giveaway. But I hate it when people try to win competitions by self promoting. I remember when one guy won some small facebook contest by asking people to upvote his comment on steamgifts, I found that really annoying.
