Hey, so I've been wondering for awhile(but never felt like making a thread).

How do you guys feel about self promoting on steamgifts?(Or other places I guess.)

People advertising their youtube channel, their stream, their greenlight game, their tumblr/website, their kickstarter, a contest they are trying to win. Etc etc.

Do you guys not mind? Do you hate them? Do you guys not mind if their is a giveaway? Do you hate them even if there is a giveaway? Do you only dislike it if the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves? Do you not mind certain self advertising? Like kickstarters are okay, but trying to win a content isn't? (Answer similar questions if you want. :0)

Let me know in the comments. I'm really curious as to how the people of steamgifts feel about self promoting.

If you leave a comment on here explaining why you don't/do mind self advertising I will invite you into a secret private giveaway in a week. What's the giveaway for? It's a secret! (And I haven't decided yet.) [Make your comment AT LEAST or 2 sentences long. More is better though. :3] (Last day to comment to enter the giveaway is Saturday night 8pm pst.)

Giveaways here!

Personally I hate all of them really. Only ones I don't mind too much are kickstarters(even though I hate kickstarters) and group recruiting threads/group threads. The contest winning stuff is the worse in my opinion, especially since it's pretty much cheating. Greenlight is awful as well, all they do is say "We will give keys to SG" and they will get tons of votes even of the game is garbage. One person on her was literally advertising something that looked like a 2 star rated flash ground on newgrounds.

I don't mind self-promotion in connection with a SG giveaway. If it gets a few more eyeballs on your product, then all power to you. People can just ignore your promotion and enter the giveaway anyway, if they don't care for this sort of thing.
I do mind those where you are (possibly) giving keys in exchange for votes on Greenlight, because too often people are just thinking "free shit" and giving you a blanket vote, even if your product doesn't appeal to them or is any good. Only if you ask for a genuine consideration and require some sort of thought, do I feel ok about these. Again more eyes on your product than you would otherwise have. I am guilty of entering a couple of these, but still I did an assessment of whether I thought the product was any good, so no pure blanket votes from me.
Finally, I despise the ones that actively ask/require me to further promote your product by sharing on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, YouTube, etc., because that sort of thing should come out of a personal desire to do so and not through an incentive provided by your promotion. It is disingenuous and leads to a lot of spamming.

I personally dont really mind promoting games through SG or youtube. Gameplay/ Ingame footage will speak to them self if it's good or not.

Do you guys not mind?
Yes I o mind

Do you hate them?
I don't hate them, they just look desperate and it bothers me

Do you guys not mind if their is a giveaway?
If it is a giveaway, they are at least trying to get your attention with something and not just a "Come Here and watch us" post, its still desperate but its like paid advertisement

Do you hate them even if there is a giveaway?
Like I said, I don't hate them

Do you only dislike it if the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves?
It doesn't matter how many posts it has its still bothersome to see a site flooded with free publicity where I go there for something else.

Do you not mind certain self advertising?
No I don't mind if it is done in a right way and not just spamming everywhere.

Like kickstarters are okay, but trying to win a content isn't?
Yes, in kickstarters you create and give something, if people want to support you normally you give them something back, in the contest type they just go spamming every site they know like if they are asking for money on the streets, "could you give me a like/coin?" its basically the same for me

Also as a side note, it is really bothering when people get advertisement with fake promises just to get upvotes or likes like the one that a lot of people have been talking lately about the Zombie game or something

I don't really mind them. It's up to the person if they want to go to the page or not. They aren't forcing you to go to their page, just asking.

I don't mind it at all, though I almost always just ignore it. As long as no one is trying to force me to click a link or trick me into it somehow, I'm not bothered.

I suppose people using SG to get votes for contests of stuff like Greenlight are kind of cheating the system, but again no one is forcing me to do anything. If they're advertising a Greenlight game I don't like I simply vote "No" anyway.

I don't hate them, mainly because they give games, therefore making this site more active.
When someone talks about their game and asks for Greenlight, I take a look at it and upvote it if I like it.
If someone says they have a youtube channel I'll look at their videos but won't necessarily subscribe.

What I meant to say is that no matter how much people self promote themselves, we're not forced to "buy their products".
This is why I don't mind most of these giveaways; they are simply trying to get people to look at their creations.

There's a type of advertisement I hate though. The one that promote a Steam group of giveaways or the one asking you to susbcribe to a Youtube channel by promising you gifts. These groups or channel are usually not worth your time and their community only consists of leechers waiting for their gifts.

this. Though those lazy guys bundle lately was a bit spammy with their giveaways. The mass giveaway and then another every four hours... I'm a bit concerned at how much the site has to deal with. Basically there isn't a big need for repetition in that case because it was showcased on the front page for a week.

I actually don't mind. And that's usually the way I find about awesome people to watch and or follow.
For the green light... I usually check the game they are trying to promote and vote yes if I feel it is good enough.
Also, I've honestly never seen a kickstarter page (at least on SG). And for contests... I just despise the idea, not the people trying to participate. :p

Hmmm It's really hard to judge. :p I will try my best. I do think it is kind of annoying, but personally if you don't like game they are advertising so don't vote and don't take part in giveaway. :D It is so simple. It is the same for others situations. Voting to help in contest or getting subs on youtube.

It's all good if only for promotional purposes. I don't have to check out or vote for anything, but if it's interesting I do. I despise people who simply try to bribe you by saying "vote for me in this contest, get a free key", it's a shitty practice and I either ignore those types or tell them to skedaddle if it's insulting enough.

It really doesn't bother me. In a time where every kind of promotion is considered "spam" and it's totally unwelcome, it actually is very useful and the community gets something in return + maybe seeing something they like. I myself am in the process of making a website dedicated to indie games where people might publish their content for a free download and a donation link and I totally plan on giving something away while shamelessly self-promoting mwahahaha!

Not to mention that it gives more incentive to give away a game instead of just getting rid of the trash like those terrible games that you see in bundles sometimes and nobody wants.

I don't mind a promo link added onto a giveaway at all. Honestly, I think it's courteous to check it out if you enter.

I don't mind promo links as long as there is a giveaway too. After all, they are sort of paying for advertising by giving all of us a chance at getting a free game. Truth be told, I hardly ever notice that a person is doing self-promotion in their giveaways anyway since I rarely read the description.

So, I run a small gaming community, SG1 Gaming. I'm currently finding ways to increase exposure, and steamgifts could be one of those methods. Undoubtedly you're evaluating it for a similar purpose. I think if my group ever does it, it will not be terribly "spam" like, as some groups try to do on other sites. It should be limited to the occasional promotion, one that is well written, and well thought out ahead of time. Further, no requirements to enter the giveaway should ever be required. Just a nice message at the end inviting people to come see whatever you want to promote. That's it.

I don't mind promoting, especially for Greenlight titles. I don't agree with the sleazy tactics of "upvote us and we'll give you a free key", but I love all the devs that give away games here and simply ask for us to check out their games. I've actually found some pretty cool games that way :)

i don't mind, but i don't bother to check unless it's about a game on kickstarter/greenlight(if so, i'll vote yes or no(instant NOPE if they're doing some kind of "dirt" campaign to get votes) based on what i think about the game).

Thanks, btw!

I don't mind nor hate most of them. It's pretty much optional if you want to help or ignore them. Thanks for the giveaways.

Don't really mind at all, particularly when developers are promoting their own game. Or even groups promoting themselves. It's a nice way to advertise to their target audience. I often check out websites/videos/channels, but rarely keep them open for more than a few seconds (mostly because I'm not the target audience). That said, I'm not too keen about the whole idea of bribing users (vote for this, get a free game/entry).

I think it's fine. It provides them with a little bit of exposure, while providing free games to the users of this site. Also, you don't actually have to do anything like visiting their Greenlight page or Youtube channel. Those things are completely optional, so it's not intrusive.

It depends...

If they make a nice appareance it's more likely that I will take a look their channel, for example. Although I'm not a fan of it. It's just that it's hard to promote yourself (at least on youtube). I'm running a channel with a friend aswell, and in our starting phase we just had to do that kinda stuff. It's impossible to get noticed on youtube these days. We stopped with that quick tho, we know that most people hate it, just like us.

People who are / were going through the same will understand why people are doing it.
