It depends on how the person advertises themself. If they're not pushing into looking at them, just quietly doing it, then it's fine.

Man. Took me like an hour to get through all the comments. lol I imagine more were posted as I was reading. I will get to those ones later.
I will reply to some comments, but obviously not all.
I wasn't really keeping track but it seems
That's pretty much it. Everything else didn't have enough to really be noted. I'm actually quite shocked at the amount who don't mind youtube advertising. I thought it would only be 1/4 maybe 1/2 of the people. It seems most don't mind youtubing as long as it's done properly and not IN YOUR FACE, and it also seems to help if it's just in the giveaway description and isn't a thread itself. (This thread will be good for future promoters. lol I doubt many would actually take the advice though.)
Other things worth mentioning right now. Giveaway video has been stuck at 301+ views. This shows how big of an influence SG can be. I mean sure a couple hundred views isn't a huge amount. But if you are a channel with like 20 subs or something, it's a shit ton more views than they were getting. And keep in mind the video is only about 16 hours old.
Thanks for all the replies everyone.(Keep em coming too!) I didn't expect so many so fast. It really has been an interesting read.
(Man... going to take forever to send out all the group invites. I should probably have a cut off date. Yeah. Cut off date will be Saturday night. Will edit that into the OP. About 99% of the people here will be invited. Saw like 3 comments that didn't really do what I asked. :p)

I like marketing statistics. They are so much better and easily understood than general math statistics. I have a friend who is a math major and he uses statistics that he says are "mathematically correct" but make absolutely no sense to anyone who hasn't been in a statistics class that teaches things like that.
Couple random things 301 is the number youtube's counter stops at to give the system a chance to verify that the views are authentic and aren't bots or anything. After they verify actual people are watching the video, it goes up to the actual amount.
As I said in my post also don't see advertising as a bad thing. I'm okay with it in general and don't see why anyone has a right to complain if they advertise in a give away as long as it's just "please check this out" and not forcing anyone to watch it or cheat the system with steam greenlight.

Self promoting doesnt bother me. Theyre the ones paying money to give away a game, so it doesnt kill me to check a link or check out a game theyre trying to get on Steam. Only time I get annoyed is if its to win contests, but even then, Ill still look at it. Least I can do if Im trying to win a game theyre paying for.

Doesn't bother me that much, especially non-intrusive advertising (more like inviting to check out) of Youtube/Twitch channels. As long as it's not bothersome I'm ok with it. Greenlight votes are a different story, especially with those shitty games and softwares (Mosaic anyone?) that got greenlit just because they promised a free key but I guess we can't do much about it and Gaben is already thinking about changing the greenlight system ;)

Most of these as I´ve seen it here is ok... maybe with the exception of those "vote yes for our game to get ..."-promises. A simple "This giveaway is to promote..." is fine for me. Most indie developers have a very limited budget for advertising... somehow they have to raise attention for their game as there are hundreds of them.

Being a salesperson by trade I don't see anything wrong with self promoting on this site or any other. Posting giveaways in hopes of luring people to one's YouTube channel, Green Light page, or whatever is an effective way to advertise. There is very little difference between this practice and the proverbial toy in the cereal box approach. Bottom line for me is that people in general like getting "free" stuff even if they have to do something for it.

People who spend money to buy free games for people on this website deserve at least whatever little help we can give them as far as advertising. I for one always read the description and if it's something simple like "hey go watch this video on youtube" or "say yes to my greenlight game!" i do it.. because it's the least you can do for someone as a thank you for making a significant contribution to SG.

I'm so tired about self promoting...
I know some people that spend the whole day just trying to get more views/visits/whatever. In a couple of years they'd look back and realize how stupid that was. Of course, I have no problem helping someone with things like that, what I'm trying to say is that the whole idea of dedicating your life to somehting like that is... kinda sad

some of they use giveaways only for suscribers or likes for their pages in facebook but some of them are for indie games or proyects some times is good but most of this type of givwaway is more for suscribers thats why i hate it they only want fame :C

I don't mind. Especially when they give good game. But sometime i wonder if some (more like private people promoting their youtube channel or so) really gives games, since they could just promote for 3 weeks with a COD, enjoy massive view and delete before GA ends.

I dont like it,
I do,
that is how I feel,
insensibleness!

I don't have a strong stance one way or the other. In some cases I hate them and in others I'm fine with the. I think it matters to be how obnoxious the person is about the promotion. If they make a giveaway and the description says something like "I'd appreciate it if you could check this out" that's usually fine.

I think devs are ok in respect to using a prize to build up attention on their games, we have giveaways to concerts, shows, etc in real life which is also used to raise hype about something. However, it's very lazy and steamgifts should be a bit more than just free ad space.
I would like to see a dev actually make puzzles/arg on the forum that will bring hype towards their steam greenlight game. entice the player's with the hidden giveaway at the end, but make it so the journey in solving the puzzle will raise hype and make them feel that the greenlight game deserve those votes.

Hey, so I've been wondering for awhile(but never felt like making a thread).
How do you guys feel about self promoting on steamgifts?(Or other places I guess.)
People advertising their youtube channel, their stream, their greenlight game, their tumblr/website, their kickstarter, a contest they are trying to win. Etc etc.
Do you guys not mind? Do you hate them? Do you guys not mind if their is a giveaway? Do you hate them even if there is a giveaway? Do you only dislike it if the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves? Do you not mind certain self advertising? Like kickstarters are okay, but trying to win a content isn't? (Answer similar questions if you want. :0)
Let me know in the comments. I'm really curious as to how the people of steamgifts feel about self promoting.
If you leave a comment on here explaining why you don't/do mind self advertising I will invite you into a secret private giveaway in a week. What's the giveaway for? It's a secret! (And I haven't decided yet.) [Make your comment AT LEAST or 2 sentences long. More is better though. :3] (Last day to comment to enter the giveaway is Saturday night 8pm pst.)
Giveaways here!
Personally I hate all of them really. Only ones I don't mind too much are kickstarters(even though I hate kickstarters) and group recruiting threads/group threads. The contest winning stuff is the worse in my opinion, especially since it's pretty much cheating. Greenlight is awful as well, all they do is say "We will give keys to SG" and they will get tons of votes even of the game is garbage. One person on her was literally advertising something that looked like a 2 star rated flash ground on newgrounds.
