I personally don't mind it as long as it's not pushy. I do find some quite interesting. I've seen quite a few promotions in giveaway descriptions and actually did bother clicking on the link to check it out, depending if the description interests me or not and if it's a Greenlight, getting me to visit the Greenlight does not guarantee a thumbs up/Yes from me. I only support games that really capture my attention that I genuinely find interesting and might buy.
However, I'm more open to Greenlight links than others... I dislike youtube and if it's a youtube link, no matter how nicely you ask, there's a very good chance I won't click on it.

Personally, I hate the giveaway clans people advertise. It's pretty much a sure way to get yourself scammed by them. All it is people telling you have to donate 30 dollars to the contribution and get scammed for nothing. I also hate when people do giveaways just to solely promote their green-light. You don't need to giveaway games just for your game to be noticed. Kickstarters are sketchy to full, why giveaway a game for some random Kickstarter no one's heard of? I honestly would not donate to any Kickstarter unless I see a hope the game and industry has, but from what I'm seeing from SG is that all the kickstarters are just a way to take your money and run.

I do not really mind the promotions. If you do not like them you can just ignore them. But I think that at least checking out their stuff is a better way to say "thank you" than just writing "thank you" in the comments. Of course if it is bad, you shouldn't just upvote and like because the OP said so.

I don't mind people doing self promotion. Even if most of it is utter junk, occasionally there is something that is actually interesting, or we get a group put together like Hashbang Games that forms a large and popular group through the promotion. Either way, I normally just read their description and don't bother actually checking it out unless it sounds good.

I don't mind as long as it's steam-related (greenlight, etc.) and is done in good way.
I expect to see a giveaway since this is what site is for
and as long as they don't require doing anything (like this and that facebook page) to enter giveaway I'm OK with it, otherwise I see it just as spamming.
I don't like seeing non-related (eg. trying to win some contest) even if they have giveaways.

Self promotion is kind of a mixed bag. I am generally okay with it, particularly if it is relative. Such as if someone is promoting a game they are developing. I self promote, but not here...because it's for my music, and I don't feel it has much if nothing to do with gaming. I also kind of save it for friends and fans, in appropriate areas.

I don't mind if a indie game developer is promoting his game in a giveaway description because you don't actually have to vote it so you can get into the giveaway. And there's always the chance to find an awesome game. Oh, and if it's a shitty game, it's not like he'll get any money if you click the greenlight link or whatever.

Personally, I don't mind people self promoting. because it's not required to vote/support to enter the giveaway. You can totally enter the giveaway without vote or view their game on greenlight.
However, I understand other people's concerns. it does give some unfair advantages over other devs who didn't do self promoting. And thus abuse the greenlight system as if it has not been abused enough.

I don't care what they are promoting. I care about they way they are promoting: if it's in a giveaway, I'm totally fine with it (greenlight is a garbage popularity contest anyway), because at least they made the effort to acquire a game, and it's in the spirit of the website. It shouldn't be allowed in a forum post, because it's a slippery slope: if you allow the estabilished user to plug something, then you can't deny the 1-comment user from doing the same thing, which leads to (even) more shitposting on the forum.

For me it depends from the thing. I understand the Kickstarter case, because it's usually hard for indie companies to have a successful campaign. I like less the greenlight thing, since it takes a second to vote and shitty games end up voted by people who would never play them.

I think self promoting is ok, because as i see it: You give some, you take some. The only time i am getting uncomfortable with it, is when you are forced to look at their stuff as in a link "Giveaways here!" ^^'

I dont mind it. You dont have to vote/like/follow something if you don
t want to. They just let you know if that there is something that SG members would like to see, he is giving a choice not forcing someone to do something. Few times i found something i like in that kind of giveaways/threads.

I don't like accounts created solely for advertising purposes, even if they make amazing giveaways for promotion. I also dislike promotion in public 1-copy giveaways. I HATE threads "yeah guys pls support/whatever, here's a giveaway [link to a public giveaway]" diaf pls.
I love though when devs promote themselves with shitloads of copies of their games. Or bundle fellows.

Well. I usually ignore people promoting they youtube channels. For sure I never (ok, did it once long time ago) subscribe but if user is asking politely I quite often at least check what they have to offer. That's because I just like nice people and want to spread the looove :P.
Other group of people are game devs and guys promoting something they worked a lot for (I remember user who asked us to buy his ebook for children on Amazon). In my opinion "HBG commercial style" (Gravi developers, I believe they started it) is quite clever way to promote their product and I quite admire that.

i dont mind advertising. a giveaway is a giveaway. i would mind if there was a rule to like their greenlight game or some other stuff like that.

I'm pretty okay with advertising, as long as it's not overdone =) People use SG as a platform for a cheap advertising, they pay with games - and that's pretty cool.
Only thing is - some guys give away their own games, some give away AAA titles, some give random bundle stuff. As I see it, it's caused by several factors - the quality of the game (bad games are more keen to giving away AAA to gain publicity), the greediness of the developers (ONLY bundle games - not that I don't appreciate them), and developer's belief in their own games (some of them only give away (other) games until greenlit, and don't give away their own game after that).

I don't really mind self promoting... I mean they might be lucky to get their game on steam / get more subscribers on YouTube. On the other side somebody might just find a new green light game they really like or a YouTube channel falling in their taste. But my self I have yet to look at one of these greenlight games or YouTube channels, I'm just not the type doing that.

I'm ok with advertising, as it's not forcing anyone to do it, of course.
I do advertising for my music too, time to time. And it's completelly ok if someone participate in my giveaway but don't vote for my music. No problem with that.
Life has taught me that if you don't ask for what you want, you won't reach that or you won't know it.
So i prefer to ask, as the grain of salt from someone can change the life of another person completelly. Butterfly effect. I love the way we are all connected.
Have a nice day :)

Hey, so I've been wondering for awhile(but never felt like making a thread).
How do you guys feel about self promoting on steamgifts?(Or other places I guess.)
People advertising their youtube channel, their stream, their greenlight game, their tumblr/website, their kickstarter, a contest they are trying to win. Etc etc.
Do you guys not mind? Do you hate them? Do you guys not mind if their is a giveaway? Do you hate them even if there is a giveaway? Do you only dislike it if the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves? Do you not mind certain self advertising? Like kickstarters are okay, but trying to win a content isn't? (Answer similar questions if you want. :0)
Let me know in the comments. I'm really curious as to how the people of steamgifts feel about self promoting.
If you leave a comment on here explaining why you don't/do mind self advertising I will invite you into a secret private giveaway in a week. What's the giveaway for? It's a secret! (And I haven't decided yet.) [Make your comment AT LEAST or 2 sentences long. More is better though. :3] (Last day to comment to enter the giveaway is Saturday night 8pm pst.)
Giveaways here!
Personally I hate all of them really. Only ones I don't mind too much are kickstarters(even though I hate kickstarters) and group recruiting threads/group threads. The contest winning stuff is the worse in my opinion, especially since it's pretty much cheating. Greenlight is awful as well, all they do is say "We will give keys to SG" and they will get tons of votes even of the game is garbage. One person on her was literally advertising something that looked like a 2 star rated flash ground on newgrounds.
