Hey, so I've been wondering for awhile(but never felt like making a thread).

How do you guys feel about self promoting on steamgifts?(Or other places I guess.)

People advertising their youtube channel, their stream, their greenlight game, their tumblr/website, their kickstarter, a contest they are trying to win. Etc etc.

Do you guys not mind? Do you hate them? Do you guys not mind if their is a giveaway? Do you hate them even if there is a giveaway? Do you only dislike it if the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves? Do you not mind certain self advertising? Like kickstarters are okay, but trying to win a content isn't? (Answer similar questions if you want. :0)

Let me know in the comments. I'm really curious as to how the people of steamgifts feel about self promoting.

If you leave a comment on here explaining why you don't/do mind self advertising I will invite you into a secret private giveaway in a week. What's the giveaway for? It's a secret! (And I haven't decided yet.) [Make your comment AT LEAST or 2 sentences long. More is better though. :3] (Last day to comment to enter the giveaway is Saturday night 8pm pst.)

Giveaways here!

Personally I hate all of them really. Only ones I don't mind too much are kickstarters(even though I hate kickstarters) and group recruiting threads/group threads. The contest winning stuff is the worse in my opinion, especially since it's pretty much cheating. Greenlight is awful as well, all they do is say "We will give keys to SG" and they will get tons of votes even of the game is garbage. One person on her was literally advertising something that looked like a 2 star rated flash ground on newgrounds.

I don't mind the kickstarter ones,so long as they are for games or something related, since someone is likely to be interested in that.
I dislike the ones who promote themselves streaming/their youtube because they usually ain't good. I wouldn't mind if it was a channel with solid quality and a notable number of videos, but most of them just have 6 videos with 10 views and horrible quality. I feel like those belong more in a public giveaway then a forum post.
I don't remember any contest except something about miss gamer and everyone got pissed at that. I'm probably not on sg long enough.
I don't think tumblr really belongs here, and for personal websites- that depends on what their content is.
I would pay much less attention to any post if the author is someone who just registered. You are promoting something in the sg community,so you should take the minimum effort to become a part of it before you ask anything of its members.

I don't mind it, if its not like "luk! I hav a gud videa here! Pls rat3 gud an subcrbe!"...

It should be taken serious and not like a joke. And no I don't want an invitation!

The contest winning ones are worst. Those I ignore.
Promoting self-made material I'm ok with. It's a low-key way to get some exposure, for folks who can't afford big marketing budgets.
Just be aware: If you promote a Greenlight and it looks too sub-standard (not enough info, game looks too generic etc.) I'll just vote no. Ask my opinion and I will give it, wether you like my opinion or not.

Fine for me, thats kinda how proper advertising works: give some to get some. Altho' there are times when I'm not in the mood for this "omg my friend makes this 13123144235435th 8bit game with 2 hours of gameplay, only for 25€" bull.
I hate people who jump at everything, and go run to daddy to report it, coz "NOTICE ME DADDY I'M IMPORTANT" "Oh, not sure if fake giweavay or 60€ game), thoose people are much more anoying to me, than the ones who advertise.

Depends on how it's done. It they do it by the rules and aren't annoying, just about anything's fine with me. One thing that I don't like is the "Upvote my shit and I'll give away more free stuff" nonsense that some folks pull. And if someone hasn't contributed to the community in any way besides self-promotion and a few bundle keys, they should just bugger right the fuck off. -_-

I might add more to this later, but yeah. That's my thoughts on this.

I don't mind the self promotion on here. In my eyes, they're giving something that they paid for so why not allow them a little self promotion. The self promotion I don't like seeing is the comments on youtube where people go onto a famous youtubers video and then say something like "Haha nice video. Hey guys come check me out. I do blah blah blah" that kinda annoys me

Nothing particularly terrible about them. Sometimes it is possible to learn about any sensible, but not publicized throughout the game, site or program. Greenlight about the same - to vote or not is purely your choice, but there are also good games enough.

Well personally I don't hate them , they are trying to promote their game , I'd probably do the same thing if I were in their place. But sometimes they actually bother me. Thanks for chance to enter ^^

Im totally cool with it. People can post what they like as long as its not inappropriate. Plus giveaways always help make me more receptive.

Well giving away something to promote yourself is mostly a good way to have a kickstarter since a lot more people will see it then with a chance of subscribing/helping winning something. They are doing you a favor which you are just returning by checking it out at least . It's a fair trade if you ask and I don't mind them cause they gotta do what they gotta do !

I really don't mind self-advertising, as long as it is in moderation. I mean, someone has to get the message out and gather the funds to develop a game right?

Self promotion? Any giveaway I've created, ranging from indie games to popular games got hundreds (my recent ones - thousands) of entries. As of making myself more popular... No need. Though I have youtube videos, it's not related to gaming, so... Yeah. Though I have an awesome minecraft video to upload, but I'm too lazy, because it eats up ALL the internet connection. Bad service.
Anyway, thanks for the giveaways! :)

Self-promotion is OK, unless a person starts enforcing the rules like "Follow me on Twitter or the GA will be rerolled".

I dont think it's something bad with self promotion. It's good way to get (for example) subscribers at youtube or somewhere else. Ofcourse.. if someone dont spam with that. Only one rule :D Thats mie opinion. BTW. Thanks for giveaways ^^

I don't really care. I don't read descriptions unless it's a private giveaway.

I don't like some of them and I don't mind some of them.

"Unforced" greenlights and something to let people know you, no strings attached, are okay for me because if you have a shoe string budget, self promotion is sometimes the only way to go. Channels, contest winning and anything imperative is a no no.

The problem with shovelware getting on Steam is something that Valve must sort out themselves. Greenlight is not evil, it is just easy to get through it if you use mindless voters.

Honestly they don't bother me too much, as long as the person is a participating member in the site, and as long as the person advertising isn't shoving it down you face, or being intrusive. I did one in my latest giveaway, it was about 1 sentence long and a nice tidy link to my YouTube channel, just because I want to do YouTube for a living, and thought to myself, "I've been on this site for 2 years, interacted with so many people, given away games, read the site rules, what's wrong with just leaving a link and seeing if people want to check out my stuff?" There you go, how's a whole paragraph for ya? xD

I don't mind as long as no one is forcing me to do anything. Sometimes I could even help or vote If I think it is something worthwhile.

I will put tl;dr part to top: I don't mind advertisement but if it is not request(meaning you have to do what they say in order to enter giveaway)that would make a opposite effect to me.I don't vote at all even if it is a good game(Okay I only vote once but that is the same thing with say yes and we will give you the game for free ,in fact valve should do something about it)

They don't have to make a giveaway for advertising.Giveaway is a incentive for some people but I will check the game in both ways(like I would comment this topic even if there wasn't any secret giveaway) or I would participate serveys even if there wasn't giveaway at the end.

If the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves I shows they are greedy and I tend to not like those people.
And for your last question if someone makes a thread about the contest I would check their work but voting is always not guaranteed so I don't mind.
PS: I don't understand how is that counts as cheating if it is a voting contest ?You just kindly ask eople to vote for you if they like you they will vote if they don't they won't.It is not illegal or something.Right??

Well I am not really a fan of it, but i guess it is a sort of a paid promotion as in they are sort of giving something in return for the attention. What I wouldnt agree it if it was made as a condition to enter the giveaway(you know like voting something on greenlight). You are promoting something with this giveaway but dont make me obligated to do it in order to win.

well it is very easy. Ppl can promote everything here. If something what they promote is OK for me, i entry and give support for thing they are trying to give public attention. If i dont like it, i just go away.

I don't mind most of them, but I don't always check them out either. If it's a greenlight game or youtube channel, then I check it out to see if I like it, otherwise I don't, because I don't use Kickstarter, Tumblr and don't really want to create accounts on some random blog sites). I also believe that making a giveaway to promote yourself in a contest is a bit unfair.
