Hey, so I've been wondering for awhile(but never felt like making a thread).

How do you guys feel about self promoting on steamgifts?(Or other places I guess.)

People advertising their youtube channel, their stream, their greenlight game, their tumblr/website, their kickstarter, a contest they are trying to win. Etc etc.

Do you guys not mind? Do you hate them? Do you guys not mind if their is a giveaway? Do you hate them even if there is a giveaway? Do you only dislike it if the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves? Do you not mind certain self advertising? Like kickstarters are okay, but trying to win a content isn't? (Answer similar questions if you want. :0)

Let me know in the comments. I'm really curious as to how the people of steamgifts feel about self promoting.

If you leave a comment on here explaining why you don't/do mind self advertising I will invite you into a secret private giveaway in a week. What's the giveaway for? It's a secret! (And I haven't decided yet.) [Make your comment AT LEAST or 2 sentences long. More is better though. :3] (Last day to comment to enter the giveaway is Saturday night 8pm pst.)

Giveaways here!

Personally I hate all of them really. Only ones I don't mind too much are kickstarters(even though I hate kickstarters) and group recruiting threads/group threads. The contest winning stuff is the worse in my opinion, especially since it's pretty much cheating. Greenlight is awful as well, all they do is say "We will give keys to SG" and they will get tons of votes even of the game is garbage. One person on her was literally advertising something that looked like a 2 star rated flash ground on newgrounds.

I consider self promotion pretty innocuous. It's not like we as spectators are in any way obligated to buy anything they're selling, and in relation to giveaways, I think it is not only an economical but positive means to advertise. Moreover, even if the noted self promotion culminates in a "crappy" game being green lit, that does not ensure that they will sell any copies, and consumers, just as they have the right sans the self promotion, are free to decide if the ride is worth the price of admission.

I've got nothing against self-adrvertising, since guys like those sometimes can offer something great that I can be interested in. Especially I like if a person "pays" for his self-advertisement to his audience by posting a useful link to some free stuff, or to a giveaway they created.

I don't mind them either. It's not like the site is full of ads so i think there is room for self-promotion. I don't think there is a problem with promoting a Kickstarter or Greenlight project. There are also youtube subscriptions i don't like. There are just too much fake giveaways there.

IMO advertising is good way to promote yourself. It's like marketing - giveaways are something like ad pen.

I think they are nice incentives. I don't mind them at all, since you're not forced to pay any attention to them and at least in steamgifts i haven't seen any malicious kind of self-promotion. No referals or anything. Besides, it's a nice way of discovering cool games that could be greenlit. Not all of them are great, but a lot are.

It depends. I'm okay with devs doing giveaways to promote their greenlight games. People mentioning their youtubes or whatever at the end of the description are mostly ok, provided it's just a mention and not "please please watch my videos, you have to!" or something forceful like that.
I don't like it when people are doing a giveaway that is just an advertisement, with long, elaborate descriptions and lots of links, big fonts and begging/forcing people to watch/rate/visit something.
Aaand I simply hate when people want help with winning a contest. We're not your personal army. Cut that shit out.

I don't usually mind, as long as it isn't something stupid like "view this and give me revenue to enter this" bla bla bla.

I get annoyed when it's an unrelated giveaway. If a developer gives away their game, that's pretty cool; it shows faith in their product and their own work, and is an act of generosity. Now, sometimes when people give away a game to promote something else, that's okay, if it's a giveaway group and you're not trying to just promote to an unrelated community. Contests, I really don't like. It's like a bribe, but more annoying because it's a matter of cents per view and unfair to people who don't dig into their pockets to attract people on a random forum. The rest of the time, it depends on the attitude; if you think you're entitled if people enter your giveaway, tough. Otherwise, if there's just a basic promotion, it's fine. I ran a writing contest (no giveaway, but prizes, so I guess it's similar?) here a while back, and I used the gifts not as some sort of "I want people to like me/enter my contest/make me feel good" but rather to get more people writing.

I just created a ticket to ask for permission to add a gofundme link for a friend of mine. Shes too busy to self promote and she needs the help so I figured I have extra keys I was going to give away so why not. It's an awesome community here and it doesn't seem like its going to be damaged more by an actual person in need than by greenlight vote beggers.

IDK i'm leaving it up to the mods because I'm relatively new here and its the polite thing to do.

To each his own. I just think those people have unrealistic expectations if they think anyone actually cares about their sites.

actually i don't really mind that much.. except if they are doing it to win a contest they are into.. well, actually people have choices so i don't really mind.. i mean if you don't wanna vote for them in their contest but want to enter their giveaway it's fine too i guess.. hahaha.. #seriouslyimconfusedwithwhatimsayingtoo

I don't care about people promoting themselves, I did that too. People need to be seen by the world to achieve their goal and this is a big community to do so...

It depends. My opinion differs case by case.

If somebody has put a lot of effort in a high quality work that's not receiving recognition, then I think self promotion is great. But I do get annoyed if I see somebody promoting themselves when they clearly don't deserve it. e.g. those bankers or CEO's that get a huge multimillion dollar payrise despite their company's poor performance.

Seems like a fair way to advertise. Steam Gifts wins with ad revenue, they win with people knowing how and what they are, and users win by getting free games. So far I haven't seen anything that seemed offensive or a gratuitous use of Steam Gifts, but it could always come to that, I suppose.

Personally, I don't mind people self-promoting as long as they keep an eye on their thread. I just hate it when they pop up like mushrooms, post their self-promotion, leave without ever being seen again. If you do self promotions, make sure to connect with the people by replying to them whenever you have the time.

Hard to generalize... Free stuff usually trumps "man this is annoying" for me...

I agree with a certain feeling of "this is cheating" if they ask you to upvote something of theirs. And while I usually do go to greenlight links i only upvote if I really think it's a nice title...

Shared youtube channels etc just get ignored... so skipped around to find the pertinent information, those just annoy me

Nothing bad with promoting, more people will see some new game. But forcing ppl to vote is not good.

Well, if it's something I'm interested in, then I don't mind them self promoting it.
But I don't care for most Youtube channels, because I don't like to watch Streams or Gameplay videos, Kickstarter and Greenlight games though are OK to me.

I don't mind it at all, but it really does depend on the context. I see nothing wrong when it's done in a respectful way like it's done on SG most of the time. But things can get pretty ugly out there, some people just don't know the difference between nonintrusive advertising and spam. I will do what I can to help nice people when I can, but please don't force me to "like" your stuff on facebook or tweet about it, that's just wrong. If I wanna do it I will, forcing people just won't make it..
