Hey, so I've been wondering for awhile(but never felt like making a thread).

How do you guys feel about self promoting on steamgifts?(Or other places I guess.)

People advertising their youtube channel, their stream, their greenlight game, their tumblr/website, their kickstarter, a contest they are trying to win. Etc etc.

Do you guys not mind? Do you hate them? Do you guys not mind if their is a giveaway? Do you hate them even if there is a giveaway? Do you only dislike it if the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves? Do you not mind certain self advertising? Like kickstarters are okay, but trying to win a content isn't? (Answer similar questions if you want. :0)

Let me know in the comments. I'm really curious as to how the people of steamgifts feel about self promoting.

If you leave a comment on here explaining why you don't/do mind self advertising I will invite you into a secret private giveaway in a week. What's the giveaway for? It's a secret! (And I haven't decided yet.) [Make your comment AT LEAST or 2 sentences long. More is better though. :3] (Last day to comment to enter the giveaway is Saturday night 8pm pst.)

Giveaways here!

Personally I hate all of them really. Only ones I don't mind too much are kickstarters(even though I hate kickstarters) and group recruiting threads/group threads. The contest winning stuff is the worse in my opinion, especially since it's pretty much cheating. Greenlight is awful as well, all they do is say "We will give keys to SG" and they will get tons of votes even of the game is garbage. One person on her was literally advertising something that looked like a 2 star rated flash ground on newgrounds.

I'll be honest, I use SG to promote our gaming channel on youtube :)

It's any easy way to give back to the community and see if anyone likes what we're doing at the same time. I usually post links directly to some of the games we're playing so you know what kind of channel we are and people shouldn't like and subscribe unless they actually like us :) I think it's a win/win because people are getting free games and the channels are getting the odd view/sub

p.s. Game Zombies is awesome, you can find us on youtube :)

Makes me puke. I can see the money raining on them by every comment someones makes.
Yaaaaay, more flash games in the Steam store! Just what we need! (Or deserve? :) ) Fake and/or stupid indiegoggo/kickstarter. Yaay!

Furthermore, personally I think, any advertisement, that gives DIREKT money (profit) gain to the person should be a bannable (like money founding sites, etc.). But I guess, mods can choose how they want to run their site.
Steam game / greenlight is ad is alright, though.

i agree with you about the The contest winning stuff its underhanded and feels alot like cheating or paying off votes. when i see these i also allways wonder if they will fallow threw with the gift even if they win/lose.

for promoting channels/self promots as long as they don't try to force you to sign up i don't see a problem.

for greenlit games. cause of things like giveaways and bundle games getting greenlit so people can have steam keys and not on the games quality its being discontinued so soon this will not be a problem.

I think if someone makes a giveaway they should be able to put whatever they want in the description as long as its not harmful or extremely inappropriate/offensive. If the game being given away is something im interested in i usually check out their link and I've found out about a few other cool games that way (although I've definitely learned about a lot of games I definitely wouldn't be interested in).
On the other hand I don't like when people try to put personal promotions/self-advertisements in the forum, I guess I feel its alright in giveaways since in a way they're "paying" for their spot by creating a GA

Honestly, I don't really mind. The way I see it is that I don't have to click on a link, or check out a website if I don't want to. In fact, I actually was introduced to a really cool game through the advertisement on a giveaway. It is another story if they create a post just to advertise, but as long as their is a giveaway, I feel that they have the right to advertise.

I don't mind it as much if they're an active member of the community. If it's someone who creates an account to say, "LOOK AT ME! LOOK AT THIS! COME BUY IT!" then they can go away now...

Although I don't mind when someone creates a giveaway to promote their product, etc as long as it's not mandatory to vote/support that product, etc... a simple advertisement is cool as it could be something I'm interested in.

I'm ok with it, but if you need to "like, share, retweet" something so you can win something (for example in this page that the things here are free) I would really disagree with it

IMO it's okay, because we are getting their games for free. They just want something for it and it doesn't disturb us very much. So we should just shut up, consider their promotion, spend acc credit and hope we are going to win...

I'm okay with people self promoting their steam group but when people self promote other things like their YouTube channel or their Facebook page,I just leave it to other people to hate on it. While I laugh at the outcome

I'm pretty ok with it to a certain extent, like it is now where they just have details of their youtube channel or game they're trying to greenlight in the description, thats something I'm fine with, after all they are giving us something for the trouble. I guess you could say that they're trying to cheat the system when game devs are doing this, but it's not like you're forced to actually vote for it, and this is what greenlight has been about since it started, it really is a horrible system.

However if i see people trying to promote themselves by just spamming comments or the forums then I'm not that positive towards it, worst case scenario (and what happens everytime) is that I just ignore the comment and move on, no big deal, although slightly annoying if you're actually looking for some insightful or contributing comments rather than people trying to self promote without contributing.

Most of them are fine and dont bother me too much. The only thing that really makes me pissed off is when they want you to subscribe to theire youtube channels because of the giveaways. Kickstarters are alright but greenlight is the biggest whore I ever seen.

Well, I don't mind it's not like you're forced to look at the youtube channel or greenlight.

I've made giveaways for games on greenlight and similar things for twitch and youtube channels and I've never given it a second thought, usually you'll get a good 25 to 250 people per giveaway.

I love them. They give away good, expensive games. It gives a person a chance to win a cool game.

I dont really care about that. If they promote a Grenlight game, I nearly never check it anyway (unless the name sounds good or familiar). If they are promoting something with a giveaway, I usually check it. If it's a kickstarter, I completly ignore it.
Most of the time when I see a promotion description on a giveaway I just try to find somewhere saying 'giveaway' or I will most likely ignore it.

everybody wants to promote their work so i understand this. In other hand it is so much of this that people are starting to hate this, just like eg. telemarketing.
I have special account which purpose is lurking in these channels, facebooks sites etc. so i don't have spam in my main account :)

I'm okay with self-promotion as long as its for something good

"hey guise look at my new youtube channel i just uploaded a new mincraft vid of me trolling" is not something I want advertised

"support our steam greenlight we're making game also giveaways in description" is slightly better

"hey guys psa i made this extention for chrome/firefox/internet explorer that tells you if you're not on the steam login page so you don't get phished" is something that I'm fine with

I don't mind self promotion giveaways because they're at least giveaways. I hate those ones asking me to subscribe their Youtube channels, follow them on twitter/FB, or join the spammy Steam groups, saying there would be giveaways but actually there wouldn't.

I see lots of GAs promoting Greenlight games, I almost never read those long descriptions and directly click to Greenlight link, then examine the game. If I like it, I vote a "Yes", if I don't like it, just closing the page. I'm not gonna "Yes" to every Greenlight game 'cuz there is a GA.

So, I think I just don't care ^^ Sometimes it's just a good opportunity to finding good indie games.

But I just hate secret GA group threads -_-

nowadays people want attention. that's why they use social media. and yes, some people want to be famous or even win some prizes. for me,i don't hate them. even i "helped" then to reach their dreams if by clicking a link will help them to get it,why not? if we get something back by helping them,it's a win-win situation i guess..

"Do you hate them?"

How can you hate anyone on the Internet without even getting to know that person is beyond my understanding. Either that or people don't know the meaning of the word hate.

I don't care much since I stop reading once I see "hey this is for x, y, z. Cause really... this isn't for that. Also its not bad because it doesn't hurt anyone and you can't use it as a way to prevent people from entering.
