Hey, so I've been wondering for awhile(but never felt like making a thread).

How do you guys feel about self promoting on steamgifts?(Or other places I guess.)

People advertising their youtube channel, their stream, their greenlight game, their tumblr/website, their kickstarter, a contest they are trying to win. Etc etc.

Do you guys not mind? Do you hate them? Do you guys not mind if their is a giveaway? Do you hate them even if there is a giveaway? Do you only dislike it if the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves? Do you not mind certain self advertising? Like kickstarters are okay, but trying to win a content isn't? (Answer similar questions if you want. :0)

Let me know in the comments. I'm really curious as to how the people of steamgifts feel about self promoting.

If you leave a comment on here explaining why you don't/do mind self advertising I will invite you into a secret private giveaway in a week. What's the giveaway for? It's a secret! (And I haven't decided yet.) [Make your comment AT LEAST or 2 sentences long. More is better though. :3] (Last day to comment to enter the giveaway is Saturday night 8pm pst.)

Giveaways here!

Personally I hate all of them really. Only ones I don't mind too much are kickstarters(even though I hate kickstarters) and group recruiting threads/group threads. The contest winning stuff is the worse in my opinion, especially since it's pretty much cheating. Greenlight is awful as well, all they do is say "We will give keys to SG" and they will get tons of votes even of the game is garbage. One person on her was literally advertising something that looked like a 2 star rated flash ground on newgrounds.

I don't really mind game-advertising. If description is nice enough i could check screenshots or videos of that game (it often takes less than 1 minute). Absolutely don't care about ad's of YT-channels, streams or websites, so i just ignore them.

I check the greenlight games and kickstarters, and sometimes stuff like music, or videos (rarely) cause I don't want to subscribe to youtube channels that later infect my account, and probably not see the videos. I should clear my subscriptions at least 3/4 of them.

I'm fine with giveaways with "have a look at our game" descriptions (sometimes can even find an interesting game that way). Youtube channels, twitch, whatever are also fine. What I really don't like is the "vote for the game and get a free key" strategy.

JK. Some are more obnoxious than others, but I don't have a big issue with it.

I do not mind self promotion as long certain rules are being followed and the promoter isn't a complete ***** , for example, they MUST use the steamgifts site to make the private giveaway in order to make me feel the "element of random chance" and not require crazy subscribements or paraaaaaraagraphs long stories (oh no wait :P i am kidding :D ) [and obviously no referral links]

I dont mind self promotion if it is done in an honest way. People who just fly by drop their copy pasted message with links and etc show no class. People are capable of really coming up with creative ways to promote themselves. I know a lot of people who are quite shy when it comes to self promotion, they dont want to feel like they are forcing others to watch, join, follow or what have you.

Don't hate yourself, it's bad for elbows...

I don't mind if someone promotes his game/channel/whatever in GA description as long as it is that: promotion, not requirement.
On forum, only group threads and self promotion from active users of their new projects. I hate threads in which content boils down to "LiEk Me!!!1111". Also, there is no chance for free view, if author didn't put any effort in describing what he is promoting. Crappy ad means even worse content.

Begging for votes, or worse, buying them, should be a forbidden. Thats cheating in my book.

I am fine with people advertising themselves in an unobtrusive way that gives me more giveaways to enter. Given that there is no obligation to pay any attention to them I have to wonder if it is really worth it for them.

I would not be supportive of those who do it in their own interests without any care and concern for the community at large. Basically, I loath those selfish ones who only start to comment on threads as part of a giveaway, instead of doing so out of enthusiasm and participation. Examples essentially are beggars who just drop in to demand for a game then disappear.

If it's someone who has been an active contributor to the community, then I wouldn't mind really. Of course as all things in life they should do it in moderation; if someone starts being irritatingly demanding then I would become concerned.

As a screenwriter, I would not advertise myself IRL. Those who should have that info will have it through trusted resources. Shadow profession I chose.

Well I believe that it depends on every case. Spam is evil, funny & interesting stuff is fine.
I believe if it has rules and regulations (it is approved by admins) it’s OK. If it is good game or game I want I don’t mind and I join GA. But generally, if someone has self-promotion in the description of his GA, no matter if it’s for greenlight or youtube channel I just don’t bother with checking out or even reading whole thing, because almost always I’m not interested. It’s same in the forum with private GA.
On the other hand, promotion like this is great and I enjoy it. Not just for puzzle, but the topic is quite interesting for me and it deserves chance to be promoted from my point of view. So I’m glad that this opportunity is here even though 99% of promotions are uninterested for me.
So I simply accept this way of self-promotion but I’m not touched by it at all.

Spammers are always annoying :) But there are lots of guys who have really nice things to show but stay unknown. I think they should promote themselves, too. So I think it is OK. Good guys should be noticed, stupid spammers should be ignored ")

In this day and age, I would say it is acceptable, although I do not agree with it. There is a flood of self-promotion and self-imposed, self-importance. Honestly, I could care less about your independent game blog that you host off of a premium Wordpress.com account. It may seem flashy due to the eighty dollar theme you bought. That shows me that you have no creativity. The utter drivel that you spout in your reviews drives the point home.
At any rate, back on track, I again, do not agree. I do not agree at all with Kickstarter. For one, you are begging for money to complete a game. A game that you should not need money for. If you do not have the money for licensing, promotions, development, ETC., why are you making a game? When the gaming scene became mainstream, developers would use the money they had made, found a publisher for advance or would borrow money. Now it seems that if you can produce a few screen shots or develop a lack-luster game, you can con people into giving you money on Kickstarter.
Case in point, the crew behind Book for Untold Tales 2. They are asking for money, after claiming to have worked together for years, AND, have produced three other titles, needs money!? They state that they want a directors cut and an orchestra for the soundtrack. So tell me why you need to beg for money for this? So, no, I don't agree with promoting Kickstarter nor using Kickstarter.
As far as Greenlight promoting, that depends. If you actually build/developed a game, a true game, I don't see the harm. For example, Catlateral Damage. I had played the demo and I voted for Greenlight. If you are playing RPG Maker VX Ace and plan to attempt to Greenlight that game, no, it's not a game, it is a product of a game. I have seen so many games hit Greenlight and are voted in!? RPG Maker VX Ace is not a game development software. It is a game, plain and simple.
All in all, I am again flamboyant self-promotion. If your product, be it a blog, a Kickstarter, or a project of any other kind, cannot generate enough interest in normal channels, to damn bad, should be there in the first place. If you cannot afford to advertise in the proper channels, should be there to be with.
Well, that's my two cents...Challengers?

Im fine with it.

Theres nothing wrong with promotion whatsoever. I think of it as a commercial with the chance of a prize, not a big deal.

I don't care if there stand:
Vote on my game on steamlight
or:
Goodluck!

The game is what cares.

I read all of the descriptions before I enter a giveaway.

Sometimes I don't enter just because someone is promoting a game I don't want to vote for on Greenlight. I'm sorry but if I don't like the game no amount of giveaways is gonna make me vote for it, and I won't enter either because I'm not a hypocrite asshole.

When it's a Youtube channel I don't mind looking at it but I will most likely not subscribe or like the video, as I use my liked video list for bookmarking purposes.

It's cool when someone asks for you to write a little something before entering. I like those if the question is a good one.

They're making the giveaway, they can ask whatever they want. It's a shitty thing to do saying "just give me the game and shut up". Come on, people, ffs.
