Hey, so I've been wondering for awhile(but never felt like making a thread).

How do you guys feel about self promoting on steamgifts?(Or other places I guess.)

People advertising their youtube channel, their stream, their greenlight game, their tumblr/website, their kickstarter, a contest they are trying to win. Etc etc.

Do you guys not mind? Do you hate them? Do you guys not mind if their is a giveaway? Do you hate them even if there is a giveaway? Do you only dislike it if the person has 0 comments and make a thread just to promote themselves? Do you not mind certain self advertising? Like kickstarters are okay, but trying to win a content isn't? (Answer similar questions if you want. :0)

Let me know in the comments. I'm really curious as to how the people of steamgifts feel about self promoting.

If you leave a comment on here explaining why you don't/do mind self advertising I will invite you into a secret private giveaway in a week. What's the giveaway for? It's a secret! (And I haven't decided yet.) [Make your comment AT LEAST or 2 sentences long. More is better though. :3] (Last day to comment to enter the giveaway is Saturday night 8pm pst.)

Giveaways here!

Personally I hate all of them really. Only ones I don't mind too much are kickstarters(even though I hate kickstarters) and group recruiting threads/group threads. The contest winning stuff is the worse in my opinion, especially since it's pretty much cheating. Greenlight is awful as well, all they do is say "We will give keys to SG" and they will get tons of votes even of the game is garbage. One person on her was literally advertising something that looked like a 2 star rated flash ground on newgrounds.

I agree with you about the Steam greenlight, but, i have filtered these "offers" taking a look at the game in first and after that deciding if i really want to upvote the game. There are some cool games doing this and others that "taking your words" are garbage, so, we need to judge if they really deserve to be in steam greenlight and not to upvote them just for a free giveaway key that i'm sure, it will be lost in your Library with 0.1 h playtime...

Kinda split on that one. Depends on the methods they are using.

I'm not cool with most self-promotion. I feel that too much of it is set up to bait and hook you, with little content to give you afterwards. If the content they're promoting is good, I'm OK with it.

Honestly I don't mind really. In the end they're still giving away a free game and the people participating can either choose to ignore what they're promoting or choose to support them. As far as I know they don't usually add stipulations to the giveaways (like only giving away the game to someone who voted for their product or something). If some actually do something like that then yes, I wouldn't agree with that.

I don't care if it's a kickstarter or a greenlight in the giveaway's description, but creating a topic in the forum just to do it, then I think they're annoying.

I've never really minded either way if people are advertising their stuff, it tends to be a lot less intrusive then most of the advertisements out there, especially on the internet. If giving away things though leads to further success for them (On that note, I wonder how successful Gravi's giveaways back in the day were) then it was all the better for them and all it took me was a few, simple clicks.

No problem with self promos. Like checking out the kickstarter and greenlight ones o see what is coming out.

I'm okay with people advertising their Greenlight games on giveaway descriptions (I usually skim through them to see the title, since there are few recurring names). Another gaming-related content is usually fine, 'cause gaming is something we all have in common.
Spam is always annoying and I don't click on it regardless of the topic. As for the contests, huh. That's a tricky question. I don't like when people beg for votes, but I feel nowadays most contests are just "who has the most friends online" competitions. Still, I don't vote.

I don't care really. Some even offer the game for free if the game gets greenlit.

I suppose that self promoting WITHOUT giveaways would get annoying. I am fine with reading a little blurb in a thread in exchange for them giving away a game that I may or may not want. It is not a big deal and the time investment is minimal.

As long as they're not begging for likes, votes ect, then I don't really mind.

I don't really mind people advertising their games with giveaways, but I hate kickstarter campaigns. Most of them don't even have anything to show except artwork and/or ideas. They want you to fund them, but you have no idea what direction the game will go in, how it will look, play, etc. You know nothing about the game they want you to fund.
They also never have any set goals or ask for a reasonable funding limit. The more money you give them, the more "gameplay" they promise to give you, like paying for dlc BEFORE a game is released. Even the popular games like starbound, which raised a ton of money, seem to be no where close to being finished. After 2 years and over $1million in funding later, they are finally in the first stage of beta (out of 3).

In short, kickstarter campaigns just waste your time and money. The successful ones that do look great still take forever to release. When they are, they usually aren't finished, in beta, etc and don't live up to the hype. The crappy ones are only listed in hopes of sponging off the community, trying to walk the path the more successful ones paved.

But that's just my opinion.

I just realized that the entry for the secret giveaway is now over.. but I already had most of this typed out before I noticed that part of the post above, so I'll post it anyway, I guess.

Part of me hates all of this self-promotion stuff, but at the same time, I also can understand why someone would do such things. I mean, you want to get your game out there, and it can be a very easy way for unknown indie developers to get the word out, especially when bribing people with a free copy of a game. You have to start somewhere, and you want to be known, so why not start with using free advertising? It's a great way to start, and you need people to find out about you and game somehow. Most people aren't just going to stumble across it, and very few indie devs will ever get lucky enough to become popular. So, they try to do whatever they can.

When it comes to these people promoting their game that they have on Greenlight, I wouldn't mind it at all if they aren't trying to get free votes by handing out their games like they're nothing; good game or not (Which, in most cases, seems to be junk that shouldn't exist on any platform, and usually at best, would make a meh flash game). Honestly, I think that anybody doing such a thing should have their game instantly removed from Greenlight, and they should not be refunded.

If you want to advertise a game that you have on Greenlight all over the internet, go ahead, and heck, hand out exclusive demos and things of that sort so people can get a preview of your game, and vote based on that. But don't bribe people into giving you votes to get your game released.

Its alright to self-promote. You have to do something. otherwise you cant get attention maybe. :) and thanks for the giveaway man <3

I think its fine. Everyone gains something by doing it. They gain a little attention, which might translate into funds, if they're drawing attention to something worthwhile and giving something back for the attention. If someone is giving away a game I'm interested in, I figure spending a few seconds to look at their Greenlight game isn't too much to ask.

If the promotion has got a good reason to exist, then way to go! i have no problem with them , the only thing i dislike,is when they direct you to random survey sites, i'm totally bored doing that and most of the times i close the browser tab :P

I have no problem with self promotion, though I would rather that it be somewhat relevant to the forum it's being posted on. From my point of view self promotion is a way for me to find out about stuff that may be interesting, and if it is, then I already have a line to the creator, which is nice.
