What is an ARG? Alternate reality game - a set of well hidden puzzles and riddles delivered via different vectors (sound, image, text).
Valve created a very complicated ARG for Portal 2 announcement and it looks like it's having another one...
So, it looks like there is more to winter sale comic than just a story.
Redditors from https://www.reddit.com/r/steamsaledetectives/ have been analysing pages of the comic and found out some hidden strings and symbols. Strings and symbols written in some darker areas of the comic. Besides that there is an upcoming steam badge titled "Red Herring" with description "ARG?".
Yesterday someone found out that there is a javascript ( http://store.akamai.steamstatic.com/public/javascript/nothingtoseehere.js ) on steam store page that listens for a specific string. So if you go to any product page (for example http://store.steampowered.com/app/391540 ) and type "SEARCH" on keyboard and then press Enter you will see a prompt. This prompt sends whatever you type in to store.steampowered.com/actions/clues and if the string is correct you either get a text or you're redirected to a certain page.
This js file was added to Steam around 24th of December.
Now, here it gets interesting.
In the winter sale comic there was a barcode with code that was very similar to Hitmans' code and if you go to any Hitman game store page and enter the code from the comic you get a specific string ic/4f21ca7
When you add this string to comic address you get http://store.steampowered.com/wintercomic/4f21ca7 which redirects you to a sound file...
