Why do people like it so much? I'm not asking this spitefully or anything, I really am genuinely wondering. What attracts people to it? If You, random internet person, play it and enjoy it, can I ask why?
I already accept that the game just isn't my cup of tea, I don't get any real feeling of accomplishment or even excitement from it. I own the first one, and I'll play it occasionally when my friends beg me to, and I played the second one a little bit at my cousin's. I just really don't understand what draws people into it, and I especially don't understand how they become as obsessed with it as I've seen with a couple people. Maybe there's just something wrong with my brain... I actually really Really wanted to like the game, especially after hearing how much my friends have raved about it, but I just haven't been able to.

EDIT: I just wanted to thank everyone who gave their input on this topic :) It was very interesting reading why you all like (or don't like) the game! I don't do much in forums anywhere on the internet, because my social anxiety reaches this far as well, I don't even feel safe or comfortable behind a screen. Everyone's politeness was a very nice surprise, and I just wanted to let you all know how much I appreciate it! I doubt I'll be putting a lot of time into this game anytime soon, but I may try eventually, when I'm able to play with many other people without panicking; perhaps I'll manage to be a bit more social in forums and discussions from now on though, thanks to you all :) Thank you.

Playing this game solo or with only 1 friend is not enough. It gets fun as hell when you get a full friend lobby and do shenanigans on it.

Aye, that's what I've been told, that's why my cousin let me play on his account with multiple of his own friends. Still didn't care for it :/
I suppose when you're all just goofing off or the like it could get amusing, though.

I think that's exactly the point with co-op games.
Than makes them fun.
Honestly, the best fun i ever had playing video games was when i was playing all kinds of co-op games with my friends at an internet cafe.

I don't know, I just don't find pointlessly goofing off so often much fun.. If I wanted to do that, I'd hang out with my little brothers. I suppose I'm just more of a "serious" player, unfortunately :(

IMHO Constant dev and community support I think. Always new DLC and generally solid/fun game. It's not anything special, just the filler waiting game that isn't zombies or pvp and mostly played by people that suck at FPS otherwise they'd be playing CS/CSS/CSGO. xD

Last i checked you do not have to be skilled to play any game you just have to want to play it.

Funny how some people will defend a game like CS-GO as those who do not play it as not being skilled when that is not always the case,i admit i suck at fps but that is not the reason i do not play,i do not play because of soar losers, kids, and so on people take gaming to serious,as if losing is the end of the world. With enough game play and practice most people can and will become good at said game i just do not play them enough to have that chance.

Payday 2 is not really hard and i admit it is fun in co-op but i am not a huge fan of the game and the DLC is over priced and well its just bland to me.They need bigger heist and less stupid gimmicks like a ninja and drills that bust all the time and unlimited AI and all those bags the game is more of a chore then it is a game.

Ohh and bullet sponge NPC while you get stuck with shit weapons that are powerful but gimped, kinda defeats the purpose of having powerful weapons,as last i check in most cases a shotgun to the chest is enough to drop pretty much anyone

Wah wah wah. I've made more money from CSGO than it cost for me to buy it. You bring shame to David Lynch with an attitude like that.

I value my free time more than an odd bit of change here and there. Same reason why I mostly only play TF2 when friends want me to. It's not worth my time playing a game I wouldn't like very much for 1,000 hours just to make a few hundred.

It's not possible to bring shame to David Lynch, the man's a national treasure.

I don't understand. I played this game for two weeks, the same maps repetead forever. It's like a Korean MMORPG, you farm the same thing 100 times only to get a better weapon

The devs keep caring about the game. They release a lot of new content (part of them as paid DLC-s of course), and it's overall fun. But with friends only, caus ethat's what friends are for... to play PAYDAY 2. Sometimes it seems like they are just milking the game, but they release a lot of free content still. PAYDAY 2 is a fun game IMO, because it needs teamwork, and co-operation. That's why it' sthe most fun with friends over voice communication etc. Don't worry if you don't like it. For example I can't stand MOBA-s, Grand Strategies (only Tower Defense games can come) and CS, but I do love PAYDAY and a lot of other games. You can't love all games at once.

Different strokes for different folks, I understand. I'm just curious about specifics. I think too much into things, so when I don't like something that everyone else seems to love so much, I really start to question it. (By "it," I mean myself, which eventually gets me questioning all my life choices..)

There is one thing, which I definitely love about PAYDAY 2: Simon Viklund's soundtrack he made for the game. It's mind blowing. I recommend you to listen to a few tracks from the OST. Worth listening to: Full Force Forward, Fuse Box, Razormind, Black Yellow Moebius, Armed to the Teeth, Evil Eye, Hot Pursuit. Of course there are a lot of other songs, but these are the ones, which are the best IMO. Now imagine: One of these songs play during an assault wave, you get overwhelmed by cops, and then you go berserk, and kill all of them. This game is a boost of adrenaline :D

Yeah, the guy below you, xarabas, linked to Razormind I believe. Really did not care for it, and when I did play the game, I had turned the music pretty low down (not off, just lower).

Try to stick to the missions you like. In my extensive reply below, the guy you hear speaking often really loves stealth missions. (I'm more of a shoot-em-up guy) So I get him to do all the sneaky parts (and he's good at it) while I do the bag hauling/throwing. When he needs some combat nut to shoot stuff up, he drags me along. Unlike the first game, you don't need to do every mission.... just keep doing the ones you like. So to cut down on all the bag hauling and drill fixing, stick to missions like Hoxton Breakout, Mallcrashers, Election Day .... even White Xmas (don't bother with the coke).

...feel free to add me and drag me along if you need stuff shot up!

I'm one of those who started on Space Invaders and I have 1.5K hours logged on Payday 2 (really looking forward to the Infamy 2.0 update!).

In simple terms, the game 'feels right'.

It feeds my ego blowing away all those NPCs who are almost helplessly trying to get into cover. The satisfaction you feel when you've pulled a friend out of the fire. Or pulled off a heist flawlessly... or had the heist go all kinds of crazy. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qd3Ip5oGYQ ) Trying for those crazy achievements or just hanging around chatting about inane things. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zQZONSR-rhg ) Even the NPCs are nicely fleshed out... something about the way they move makes it seem more real (even though the rate at which they get taken out is completely unrealistic) without making them as deadly as you are (ie: all those multiplayer shooters where other players kill you just as fast as you kill them) . It's even better when you factor in that there's no reward to blowing them away (except the feels). The objective is to get away with the money and killing them does not get you any money... taking the time to take em out really just hurts your money/xp gain rate.

'Feels right' usually means that the game gets multiple aspects right and more importantly mixes them together in the right way. Despite the minor game advantages, it is satisfying to use a build that you designed yourself, using talents and abilities that you selected, along with your personally modified gun, mask and load-out. You selected and paid for the assets you will use in the mission... the plan and strategy (and more frequently plan B, C, D.... Z.... that you have to make up when things go wrong...) that you and your friends worked on.

It's a game that's about you, your friends and what all of you want to do.

Yeah, I guess it's just one of those things that you either love it or you... well, not hate it, but just don't care for it. None of the above that you mentioned ever gave me feelings of satisfaction. Kind of like zozpf16 said above, it's a lot of repetition for a not very satisfactory reward. I'm glad you enjoy it and have fun, though! :)

I love the feeling of getting a job done clean and proper, plus the challenge of dealing with a horde of gun-toting cops never gets old. And leveling up and putting together a good build feels great. I don't know why I like deep character customization, but I really do. I suppose it's my OCD. Hm.
Pub games can also be quite hilarious. I love hosting games, just to see how many people come in and try to troll. Acting like a buncha dumbasses. lol That shit gives me joy.
Also, what leode said. It pretty much mirrors my own opinions.

And I've always been a fan of FPSs, too. The gameplay just feels right. It's much easier to get the hang of that perspective, as opposed to third-person shooters or action games.

If you have some friends to play it with, it's one of the best co-op pick up and play games around. Heist can be as short as 60 seconds or as long as 30 minutes, most levels can be done loud or silently, allowing for multiple ways to go about the jobs at hand. The AI director and RNG system (good or bad), adds some randomness to the levels, so even when you do play the same ones again and again, there are little differences between playthroughs. As long as you don't stick to a certain play style and switch up between which heist you do and how, the game doesn't feel as grindy as it can be. Some of the DLC also helps with the grindfest, allowing for weapons and mask to be unlocked by obtaining achievements and collecting hidden packages for mod sets.

There are other little things I really enjoy about the game, as well as some things I really hate (mostly about the developers, which I have a love/hate relationship with), but I can see how a lot of people would be turned off with the game. I actually know a few buddies who picked it up and just never got into it, all for different reasons. I think the thing that really turns people off the most about this game, the learning curve and the lack of a real tutorial. Starting off a heist you've never done before, not knowing what to do, how to go about doing the things you can do, and the lack of skills/equipment because of being low level, that really turns people away from the game.

If you haven't played it for a while though, you may want to give it a try. The game is very different then when it first came out, with changes to the stealth mechanics, skills being re-worked and swapped with different ones, the addition of the heat system, pre-planning mode, the perk deck system, a new skill tree, and other tweeks to everything.

I have Payday 1 and 2 but have yet to ever try them. I noticed the release of Payday 2 Game of the Year Edition for $19.99. I've already purchased some DLC for it in the past year or so, but I don't know if it's worth the GOTY considering I haven't played either to know if I like them. If I buy all the DLC I don't already own it adds up to $13.28, so I hesitate if it's worth 66% the price of the GOTY just for some DLC - weapon packs and costumes. Maybe just the individual heists.

Any how, I digress. :)

Its very fun, if you play with 3-4 friends, and obviously if most of ppl know how to play, some missions are just go and steal or go and rob, but there is lots that are very fun, I'd say most of them are very fun, no matter if you stealth or directly rob, and devs care a lot about updating game always, they add more new cool stuff, and not of all added stuff is paid, which is awesome, they even make events, like for Christmas, Halloween, etc.

Stealthing a heist imo is the most fun aspect of the game. Problem is you can only do that with a good group of people. Otherwise it's just like every other shooter out there since people just want to spray bullets everywhere rather than use their heads.

I liked the first one because i wanted a change of pace. I wanted to shoot people but have it be a secondary objective, you know?
So when i got my hands on payday 2, i got into it pretty hard. I loved the fact that it allowed me to sort of still represent myself in game with the customizable masks. The feeling of pulling off a very difficult heist where everything either goes according to plan, or none of it does at all, is amazing either way. I loved that there wasn't really a contract there that specifically tells you to be a contract killer (at least until the hotline miami DLC where you are instructed to kill the commisar.) You are just a robber/gun specialist/hacker/drill fixer/bag thrower/guy who shouts at people to get the fuck up/twat who steals from the rich to give to himself. And i love that about payday 2. I can agree that there is a ton of DLC for it but they are optional. I guess it just really boils down to your preferences and if you can get matched up with good people when you play, if you don't have enough people or people in general to play with.

I didn't like it first time, but I gave it another shot and when I figured out the whats and hows it turned out to be pretty fun, but only on Overkill difficulty. The first two is too easy and Deathwish is really hard, for me at least.

Problem with Payday2 is that you are useless frankly till around level 60ish and most new players try to specalise in multiple areas when you should just stick with one tree and one tree only.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No you shouldn't. Tons of skills are really "meh" and some trees are obviously meant to be used together. Like fugitive and mastermind (fugitive due to akimbo pistols skill, while mastermind having various pistols-buffs), or enforcer (heaviest armor) and technician (additional armor buff).
But yeah, until level 50 you should stick to deathwish stealth heists, so you can quickly level up and then you can play shooting heists.

I guess it's the sense of you actually working together with other people for once. Instead of trolling each other in PvP, you can instead, or rather forced, to work together in a PvE game. I also like that Payday 2 have a skill tree in which you can gain skill points after each level. So you can play whichever roles that suits you.
