Looking for information regarding "Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning". I've been meaning to buy this but i could never figure out whether to buy it from Steam or just wait for a better sale. My previous purchase of Deponia complete just screwed me over when it came out during HB, and I'm just wary of buying them now

I'm posting here cos i figured you guys could enlighten me on whether can you consider this to even 'be' a gem when the discount is so common that it might as well be considered a paste gem

Here's the deal with price drops. If you're willing to pay for it and going to play it sometime very soon, then you're not getting screwed over when it goes cheaper. Otherwise, you should always wait until you're actually going to play it or you see it in a bundle.

The game is bit repetitive but has it's moments. Wouldn't recommend it as a gem but a ok RPG which somehow tells you it's MMO but there are no other people (weird one). 4,99€ (at least on EU region) isn't really a high price but as I said: not a gem on normal price. If you have time to waste and enjoy actionish RPGs then buy, I somehow have the feeling that it won't be in many bundles.

It's a top-notch Baldur's Gate/Pillars of Eternity style game. There are incredibly few games in the genre, nevermind good ones.

At $2, even if it gets bundled, you won't have lost much. Really the best [reliable] chance you're going to get at it.

I only just bought the game myself, but I've been following it for a good long while.
So I can say it LOOKS amazing, and most all the reviews seem to agree it is- but I can't firmly attest to it :X

If you're talking Dishonored GOTY, that's a hard one to turn down [no GOTY upgrade available, though, so skip the base game].

Van Helsing I really only favor for its co-op [buggy as it can be]. Has a few odd quirks.

I don't know anything about RoK :/

My money'd be on the first two- do you want a stealthy action-adventure, or do you want a good example of the underrepresented real-time-with-pause tactical RPG genre?

Keep in mind you have till the (5th? 6th?) to use those < 2 hours to test a game and make sure you want it [for refund purposes] ;)

To answer your question:

Characters: In total you will run into 8 different characters you can add to your party, who are all called Wheel Swords. You can only have four of them in your party at a time, but you can freely choose who you want most of the time, since sometimes you will be forced to split into two groups. Luckily, even if they aren’t in your current group, they will still gain experience from battles.

If you're looking for a Van Helsing game that plays well both solo and co-op, try http://store.steampowered.com/app/345180/ instead [only 50% off atm, however].

As far as 'getting the best bargain for your money', Aarklash seems a shoe-in, at its discount.

I enjoyed Van Helsing as a single player game very much - I'm finding it is even designed as single player, as coop partners would just play another Van Helsing figure and at their most you would have four Van Helsings running around your screen. It's a solid ARPG with good humour and an interesting campaign. I liked it better than Victor Vran, which lacks the feeling of prgoression for me, and it sure is better reviewed as Kyn. I was told Kyn would be awful with nothing but the art going for it.
So ... you might want to reconsider your decision. I highly recommend Van Helsing.

Hey guys, i'm more into ARPG atm so which one would you recommend between Grim Dawn and Victor Vran ?

I don't think i would like Van Helsing from what i've seen, gameplay isn't really dynamic which is something important to me. On the other hand, i heard VV's gameplay is somewhat smooth and fun. And idk about Grim Dawn.
I love the Monk from D3 for example.

Second and probably the most important thing is the content, diversity for builds and class, bunch of dungeons, replayability...etc

Is any of them would be worth picking ? Or should i just stick with PoE and D3 (if Blizzard ever puts it on sale -_-).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Grim Dawn is still Early Access, and lacking content. If you want a polished, fully playable game, I'd go with VV.

I'd say D3 is the weakest of the lot, especially with PoE's recent special path additions.

Victor Vran gives you abilities and stats based on what loot you have geared, rather than from a skill tree, so it's fundamentally different from the rest.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Thanks Sir.

About Grim Dawn : i don't mind if it's early access as long as the devs are active on the project (which looks like they are) with an approx release date for the complete game. I think i read on their Steam page that the game is currently 80% done, do you think that even with the last act it will be lacking in comparison to VV ?

About VV : Interesting, but doesn't it make the whole thing a bit frustrating ? I mean, is this based on your luck for dropping the right piece of gear to be able to go the way you want ? Or maybe the amount of different abilities is limited... Oh well, that open some possibilities, i'm curious about that system now :D

What really impress me about PoE, is that it keeps growing... new expansion early 2016 if i'm correct (?).
Not sure about Grim and VV's end game...

I'd go with jims comment, below, on that.
If you don't mind partial games and watching them develop over time, it may be for you. I'm more the full-experience/binge-watching type, myself :)

And no, unlike most ARPGs, you have reason to hold on to different kinds of gear, so you can swap them to deal with different kinds of mobs. You can still affect your stats through level-ups, as well.

Basically, character-building is more simplistic than many other hack-and-slash loot-farming ARPGs, but loot feels a lot more distinct and valuable [especially compared to games like Diablo or PoE, their unique/corrupted items aside].

In other words, games like PoE and Diablo shift feeling every few levels or locations, while VV constantly feels dynamic as you go through stages- but has less complexity in the long-run, for things like repeat play or complex character builds.

So, less grindy, more engaging, more dynamic; but less player build options and replayability.

PoE, I loved so much about it, but it relied too heavily on Diablo 2's framework, meaning items felt non-distinct, monsters felt non-distinct [being more swarm-based than constantly shifting dynamics], and the level grind was notably demanding.

Hard to beat its character design system, however, especially now- and as you say, it's constantly trying new things, which is darn cool, and its f2p model is incredibly appealing, especially with how cool some of the cosmetics are.

Really, all depends what you're looking for- for example, if you want a good palette cleanser from PoE, VV is a great choice. It should give you a much more engaging time, for that first run.
Grim Dawn, on the other hand, seems a meatier offering, but you've got some months of wait left on core content, nevermind any enhancements or polishing they may want to add down the line.

Put another way, I'm even more interested in GD than VV, but I personally wouldn't pick it up just yet.

All depends on your own preferences :)

It's easier to stay on a budget, for me, when buying only for myself- I only get really heavily discounted games (85% off AND less than $2, being my baseline).
Harder to restrain myself when it comes to gifts for others, i wanted to give away so many great games (over twice what my budget allowed, in fact). :'P

Well, the plus side of having a large backlog, I don't have to be too picky when it comes to new games for myself :'P

I get the stress, though- ended up getting a copy of Journal to give away during the autumn sale, and had to stress over picking up a copy for myself, as well. Given my budget, I had to pass- luckily, it's back to 85% off this sale, so got that copy after all :)

Both Pillars and Baldur's Gate are as well (don't forget to click the + next to the listed tags for the full list of highly-applied user tags).

According to the definition present on wikipedia and other sources, and my own understanding of the label, it's an incorrect usage (nevermind incorrect to the core definition of strategy, which is large-scale tactics), but.. at least the people applying it are consistent :P

Hmmm, wouldn't define Pillars or Baldur's as strategy at all. Spellforce maybe.

The correct category for all three of the games I listed would better be 'Tactical RPG', which is what the developers themselves make reference toward in the description.

What kind of strategical elements do baldur's and pillars have? I remember spellforce having some strategy elements (though my memory is quite foggy, played it many years ago), but can't tink of anything similar in those 3.

...none? o.O
As I was trying to say, they're all mislabeled.

Spellforce is an RTS/RPG hybrid, so it does have strategy elements.

Well, according to wiki's definition of Tactical RPG: "This subgenre of role-playing game principally refers to games which incorporate elements from strategy games as an alternative to traditional role-playing game (RPG) systems." :P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Real-time-with-pause RPGs are really their own category (similar to the Real-time-tactics subgenre for the Strategy genre), but generally get inaccurately lumped into TRPG (which properly refer solely to isometric, grid-based, turn-based party RPGs) or generic CRPG genres.

The primary reasoning here, is to keep it within the RPG tags- though accurately, it would be a subgenre of Real-Time Tactics, instead.

Since 'Tactical' doesn't inherently imply turn-based, Tactical RPG is usually the one I see applied to it. I think 'Real-Time-With-Pause RPG' is getting more recognition now, though, mouthful that it is.

Nevertheless, the 'Tactical' tag certainly fits, whereas the 'Strategy' tag does not.

tl;dr, people are getting confused in their labeling because there's not a specific genre title associated with the game type, but 'Real-Time-With-Pause RPG' is generally becoming the term used.

tl;dr, tl;dr: Not a strategy game. :P

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Real time with Pause is common enough for people in certain communities to simply refer to it as RTWP.

I would not clump Aarklash Legacy together with Pillars or BG though, as it's almost entirely combat focused. The combat is quite tactical, and positioning plays a larger role than in most other CRPGs. So I think a tactics tag would be quite appropriate in this case (strategy less so, but as tactics is often clumped into strategy, I guess a strategy tag would work)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Strategy, by definition, is 1: a plan of action or policy designed to achieve a major or overall aim. or 2: the art of planning and directing overall military operations and movements in a war or battle.
It's all very large-scale, while tactics refers to more precise planning.
Generally, a general deals in strategy, while a commander deals in tactics.

Technically you could apply Strategy to a lot of things if you just lower your expectations to 'overall approach', but it's almost exclusively used to refer to large-scale [unit] games.

I'm on board with the rest of what you're saying, though- and the emphasis on tactical combat is really what I like about Aarklash. Which isn't to say I don't like the other games for their own merits :)
